Sampling & Remixing: Sampling with Simpler

Welcome tio mableton live fundamentals sampling and remixing so sampling and remixing and able tonight is is basically what it's a it's a big part of what it's all about their there's tons of different ways to sample and remix and hamilton the main when I mean the mainly you khun store samples and what is the flagship feature of a bolton is the session view and there's also several other utilities that we're going to discuss on some different approaches that should provide endless inspiration alongside your samples I like to think of sampling as kind of like the workshop excuse me the thrift shop for music it's ah it's it's kind of an endless supply of tambor's and uh if you're ever in a right sampling is always a really fun an easy way to combat that so um go to your local library and get some samples and that's a great place to do it because it's free and you can rip the cds and you can have fun to your heart's content so um he needs some samples go delivery so the first one the firs...

t tool we're going to talk about today is simpler this is my go to sampler its basic it's just a stripped down version of a sampler it has uh you know a it just has the stuff you need just like the name uh there's also as another utility for percussion mainly for percussion and on and they've they've called it the drum rack and it's essentially one hundred twenty eight, it can hold up to one hundred twenty eight simple er's samplers. You can put any kind of many up instrument in there, you can even put an operator in there and has, ah, return about senate, so we'll discuss drum racks today, which is basically a more complicated version of that. We'll take a look at the impulse, which is a really, uh, simplified drum or rhythm simpler it's very, you know, very easy to use and it's great for just bang and ideas are working just on the laptop. We'll take a look at the sort of the king of of sampling first it's, the the able to kn sampler, which is it's included in in life sweet, but it is, and it isn't a premium utility or if a premium instrument and then of course, we'll take a closer look at the clips and how you can just you can use the clip view as a sampler as well. Ok, so we're gonna start by by bringing in a sampler we can take a look at this guy and this thing's a beast I used sampler most for when I'm wanting to d'oh forward and reverse playback, I always start with a simpler and whenever I need to expand the functionality, you can actually just you can click on the sum you could do a controlled click on the simpler and it'll it'll turn it into a sampler for you and you can actually go the other way as well and we'll talk a little bit about that too it's really simple so you can just you khun get bounced back and forth between simpler and sampler when you're not needing the expanded tool set so I'm gonna pull enough I sound here god some spreads might not be the best one we'll see what else we got hmm I'm not going to use that let's hear oh, it is that okay, so basically just you could just drag and drop from the browser into the sample zone or the the sample information area there's also a zone for multi sampling you khun layer tons of samples here, governor my browser and select a bunch of only can just drag him and drop him in and you can also you can define the range here I if you've got him all selected and this is kind of, uh able to wide whenever you've got a big chain like this you control click you could distribute the range is equally and that will save you some time um instead of going in sort of manually uh expanding these um the's ranges you can actually just you khun you could distribute equally when you do a control if you select all of them and do a control click so that'll spread them out over the all right that's um birds and monkey sounds now makesem jungle music all right so uh simpler is guy all kinds of features I mean eh you can it's got the pitching oscillation section actually has fm and am uh frequency modulation and you can you can add a pitch envelope um it it's it's very full featured theirs also an ex wife filter here the other filter envelope more volume modulation there's ah wave shaper in here that adds some really nice color you can go with like a four bit sound and it's a it's a very harold me actually do that here's our bird son without it it's kind of like some really like soft noise which can give your sound a little character make it cut through the mix a little bit better and it also sounds really good with a filter with that when you open that envelope it has the that noise has a sort of like this creamy will like kind of sound to it sounds really nice very smooth uh so the modulation section is it was also completely awesome there's the an auxiliary uh a place where you can you can route all kinds of the you know destinations you know you can write you can route offset loop star you khun route the ela foes in here to this to this envelope there's three lf owes um and in the end sampler and there's also all kinds of middie routing options the sample or if you need to expand that so it's it's a an incredible fully featured instrument and uh which I hardly scratched the surface on in my day today music making because simpler is quite honestly plenty for most of what you're probably gonna dio so yeah elephants antelopes routing galore it's it's a sophisticated uh instrument you can do if you go into the zone editor here you can specify the range by three across your keyboard you can also uh you can do velocity sensitive samples and you can also change select them too so you can you can have hundreds of samples uh hundreds and hundreds of people so um it's and you can get all this you can get similar feature with with using racks as well and drum racks because you can also do map ranges do chain selection and uh and velocity um selection as well so say you've got see what we've got this a parakeet sound and we have a loud parakeet sound in a soft one are just so soft little bird sound you khun define that so that whenever you strike your pad or your your keyboard harder it plays the loud sound and when you you strike it softer it will do um uh the quiet sound so you can define all these ranges um you can also auto slice the sample sampler just like you can auto slice to drum racks so basically what you do is you go to your user library and there's a defaults folder in here and if you uh if you drop basically you just take sampler and you drag and drop it in here and it will it will put ah ah version of uh of sampler without and it'll save a preset with whatever you have set up if you like having the forward and reverse so that whenever plays your sample forward play that forward and then backwards you can set that up every time you drop a sample and so it does that so so every time you uh you slice something let's let's go in here and I've got a I've got an r twenty six hundred little vintage analog sent here so basically I just sampled too active uh to actives of drifting analog saw waves and what I'm going to do is I'm in his hell it to slice to new midi track and when it does this it's ah gives the option says do you want to use slice it per transient or war markers? I could go in there manually plug these work markers in but actually looks like abel since made some really good guesses about where the transients are and I'm pretty happy with that so I'm just going to use the transients and here's my sampler here's actually buy tow to that was the name of the precept that I just dropped in there so if I selected that one it will slice this out into a multi sampler ah and so we can go in here to the zone and you can see that it actually put it across our two octave range automatically for us and it also mapped the route as well so um works really great and sit can save you a ton of time and if you want you can even go in here and make it a some player ah ah and uh now it you know this is the way for more show up anymore it'll just say multi sample mode and basically you can't dio you can't can't edit it the same way you can a simpler if you just started without but this does a lot for multi sampling which simpler doesn't so if you have a friend that doesn't have the full version of sweet or you want to just use or you want to simplify the processing power you're trying to save some cpu you're building a live set you can convert everything to a simpler and save yourself some uh some processing power um and it's got tom's a great features so um it's it's usually more than enough okay, well, now that we're here in simpler ones we'll talk about it um like I said, this is my go teo device for for for playing with sounds so one thing I love about it is if I have an empty midi track aiken drag a piece of audio straight in and it'll create so I've got that audio and I'm dragging it into the device here and when I drop it in there it actually makes a sam a simpler for me automatically and you don't have to actually go to the the you know your browser and an openness a simpler you can just drag the audio straight and don't make one for you and uh this device is super cool it runs on thin air as I say often and it's ah it you can run tons of these things and not worry about eating your your cpu and um it's got a fairly simple section there's there's three menus for uh for a tactic a sustaining release volume filter and pitch and you can loop this file you can loop the sample and cross fades hee hee and you can you can even zoom in uh and you can get down all the way to the zero plan take a look at that um the trough and crest of the wave form and e it's it's super detailed if you if you dive in um now as far as the routing goes, um it's it's fairly straightforward um the by default the lfo is off so you can turn it on and that will modulate your filter if you so choose and you can also transpose the pitch lfo here um and the um all of these are obviously mini map a ball so um simpler and usually I don't I don't I'm usually just triggering sounds most of the time with this device I'm not I don't do a ton of um I don't use the l f o and it may be if I'm doing a riser or something that I'll always a pitch envelope um I do use the filter pretty often aa lot of times I use a high pass filter to cut the base or to just kind of do my e queuing in that way I don't even end up adding any e q or filter any like anything like that I'll just cut the base directly in simpler with the high pass filter so what I hear when cool thing is the pitch envelope so if I go here to pitch and I turn it on and I can bring this up for our actives it's a really neat way tio to generate a riser sound there's something called single cycle wave forms and single cycle wave forms are basically these tiny little blips of of audio data and essentially, they there's there's a single crossing over this zero point here, and recently I discovered a treasure trove of these action kid wave forms, and basically, I found thousands of of tambor's online where and they're very short, you'll hear is just a little blip, probably about a tenth of a second. And if you pull it in simpler will loop it automatically because it recognized it as ah recognizes it as a a single cycle wave form. Let me I already got some settings killing here, so I'm gonna delete that sampler. Just drop it in here. Oh, and, uh, so you khun could download these on the on online and there's, thousands of them basically from old samplers and collected throughout the years. And you can get lots of really neat sounds. And like I said, they're free and there's actually all kinds of stuff. There's also saws and fm since electric guitars will see that that sounds like that's loud. Ah ah ah, but it's a great way to really expand your sound set quickly. So give you give you king, you know, adding, these single cycle waves can give you a bunch more tones to play with, so I recommend downloading those
