Adorama Gear Review: Fuji X-T1 and 18-135 Water Resistant Lens

Okay folks so today we're going to talking about the fuji sixty one and when they asked me to do this class and demo I said yes, I definitely want to do this because this is a very interesting camera it was introduced not too long ago it's fuji's most recent introduction in they're interchangeable lens cameras and when it came out there was there was a buzz in the photographic community that I had not seen for quite some time. This camera really generated a lot of interest in both among fuji users who said this is my camera this is the camera that I want to have and it also generated a lot of buzz among other manufacturers users because they were looking at that going that's how it's supposed to be done because it looked really good on paper and then when it hit the streets it's been doing great ever since then I've seen a lot of popularity and so it's a fun little camera it's it's a little different than many of the other cameras out on the market and it's different in a very good way...

I might say myself so what I'm going to be doing in this segment is I want to go through and I want to first off look at some of the specs you know when you get a brochure for cameron on the back side of it it's got hundreds of camera specs I said, well, I'm not going to do that, but let's look at a few of the key, most important specs I'm going to go through them let's you know what it has and then maybe more importantly, I'm going to translate what that means in the really world off of what a particular feature does after that, I'm going to go in and talk about some of the unique features that this camera has that is not common in the industry or maybe it's solely unique to this particular camera and then I'm going to dive into a little bit of a class I teach a five hour class on this through creative live, and we certainly don't have time for that entire class here, but I've decided to pull a few segments from that class so that I can show you the main operation of the camera how you would actually work some of the functions on the camera so you can get a feel for what it's actually like to use and if you already own the camera, this might give you some tips on how I would set the camera for various situations after that. I want to tell you about a few things that are in the menu system that you may not originally know about they might be a little bit buried in there and some reasons why you might want to go in and adjust that and then it's rush said earlier, if we have time, we'll take some questions at the end and so let's, go ahead and get started. I want to talk about some of these key specifications that the camera has, and I broke him down into nine really important categories, and obviously for a digital camera, the sensor is hugely important. This camera uses an a psc sensor, which is in the industry wide. I would consider it a medium large size sensors so it's big enough to do very good under low light conditions. It's big enough to get really high resolution images, and so it's a good sensor to having the camera it's a sixteen megapixel sensor, which is a very sweet spot when it comes to the number of mega pixels to have in a camera. I have used a sixteen megapixel sensor is actually on earlier fuji camera, but it's with same sensor that's in this one. And when I was in cuba leading a tour, I've made some twenty four by thirty six inch posters from it, and they look absolutely fantastic. So you want to make enlargements. You can definitely do it with a camera like this, and then the sensor itself is an unusual sensor in the industry. Nobody else is using this unique fuji sensor it's, the ex trans see moss to censor the two unique things about the sensors first office, it does not have an a filter and anti alias seen filter, and this is a filter that a lot of manufacturers put in front of their sensor in order to aboard avoid moray and fuji wanted to get this filter out of there, but they didn't want to have more. And so what they did. I have some graphics here on screen that will show you that the extra and sensor the way that it has the number of pixels and where they're positioned are significantly different than the standard bearer pattern that most cameras use. Notice where those red dots are and where those blue dots are. It's amore random pattern this actually, I believe, comes from their film technology. We all know that fuji made a great film for many, many years, and they're trying to emulate the way the film green worked in a new digital sensor, and so they were able to take off the a filter so they could get really sharp pictures. But I have this unique sensor on there to kind of work this whole new system. So it's got a unique sensor that, in result, gives you great images, great picture quality. Next up let's talk about the I s o sensitivity how what can we do with this camera? Well, it has a range from two hundred to sixty, four hundred, which is a great range tohave, but you can also extend it down to one hundred and you can also go up too. Fifty one thousand two hundred these extendable ranges are in j peg on lee, so if you want to shoot in raw, you have two hundred two sixty, four hundred and I don't know the last time that I went up above sixty four hundred to get a shot. Generally I'm in sixteen hundred range depends a little bit what on what you shoot but sixty four hundred should be more than enough for most situations now the frames per second in the buffer and this kind of gets down to the processor that's in the camera, the camera uses an e x r processor to and at eight frames a second it's going to be one of the fastest cameras on the market in the frames per second category. I can only think of a handful of cameras that fire off raw images faster than eight frames per second the buffer if you're not familiar with the buffer, the buffer is how many images can you shoot right now and the camera will store those in camera and then it will slowly download them or as quickly as I can, I should say quickly to helm load those to the memory card and so on this camera you can shoot and this may be slightly different than the fuji stance I've got actually better results than I've seen in the stats coming from fuji I've got forty seven j pigs or twenty three rock continuous shots shooting at eight frames a second, so if you want to shoot action with it, it is a pretty darn good action camera one of the fastest ones out there next up what's really important to me in a camera is the focusing system on a camera this camera uses of forty nine focus focusing system you can use either a single point and select any one of the forty nine points or you can select all forty nine and for anyone who shoots action one of the great things is that these forty nine points covered a very wide area of the sensor and so you could be focusing on something way off to one side or the other with this camera next up with the focusing it uses an intelligent hybrid autofocus system. This is kind of unique. One of the problems with some of other of the other marylise cameras is that they use a contrast detection system this is just reading the light coming off the sensor well fuji has put put phase detection sensors built into the sensors so that the camera can use two different types of focusing system and what this basically means in the long run is that if you're focusing on subjects that are moving, this camera is going to do very well out that I've taken it out and I've tested it at eight frames per second with people moving towards me and away from me and it is extremely good you're going to get an extremely high number of infocus pictures with this and so it's one of the best focusing cameras out on the market next because it uses an electronic viewfinder there's all sorts of digital assists that you get from this camera what's kind of need it there is a scale it tells you which way to turn the lands and in one of the coolest features and we'll show you in an illustration coming up when I a little cut from the class it not only shows you where you are focused, but it shows you how much depth of field you will get when you are focused at that particular aperture at that particular distance and I don't know of any other camera that does this and I've been wanting this had been dreaming about this for about twenty years because I knew it was theoretically possible they also have magnification peaking, which is what a lot of video users like that's where the highlights turn white, and so they blink it. You see, you know, if there's any hot spots and you need to adjust exposure, and then they have their own unique split image, which is very reminiscent traditional manual cameras and those who use those cameras kind of remember the circle in the middle, and you're lined up vertical lines in there, and they have a digital version of that that I think some of you might like quite a bit. Next up for me in importance on a camera is the quality of the viewfinder I personally don't own any cameras that don't have viewfinders it's gotta have a good few finder. Now, this camera is using an o led it's, a two point, three million dot vf that most people would argue to be the best in the industry. Currently, it is very sharp and detailed and there's a number of other aspects that are very good about first off. It's got a very, very short like time, and this is important if you have the camera up to your I and you're moving it from side to side, there are some cameras that have a lag time in his you pan over here, it's still looking at something over there because there's such a lag time between the way. It pans and so it's very difficult to shoot panning shots and this camera has an extraordinarily quick lag time on it. So it's very good for that action type work. It's also got a huge viewfinder. It's a point seven seven magnification it's a little hard to compare with other cameras, but this camera, when you look through the viewfinder, the image that you see well, it's like having the biggest tv screen on the block it is a big viewfinder that is, and I was doing a comparison against another camera. Uh, dslr and I would say that it looked about fifty percent bigger as you went from one camera to the next. And so if anyone appreciates a good view finder and most serious photographers dio you're gonna love the view finder on this camera and finally they have a vertical info which this is kind of fun when you hold the camera horizontally. I've always wondered well, when I turn it vertically, all the information is lined up over here on the side and I can't read it right. So when you kid flip the camera vertically, it switches all the digital readout so that you can read your shutter speed your aperture metering system all those other settings on the camera automatically it's got a tilt sensor in there and it adjust that and it seems so easy to do but this is the only camera the market that I know of that's doing it at this time all right, next up let's talk about the lcd on the back of the camera it's a three inch screen which is pretty common these days it has million dots which means it's very high resolution which is going to be good so that you can check sharpness when you're out in the field and it's got a tilting screen so that you can tilt it you know let me just show you how much it tells because some people are always wondering, you know, does it till just a little bit or does it tilt a lot? Well tell to ninety degrees this direction so you could hold it waist level you can get it down low to the ground and it's not quite ninety degrees but you could hold it up like this. You can probably get the camera as high as you can over your head and still get it positioned right so it's a very useful feature to have especially if you like getting into unique points of view which is one of the things that I like to teach in my photography classes is getting your camera in a unique place and getting it down low is easy for all of us in that screen makes it a lot easier all right, next up let's talk about the shutter unit in the camera so the shutter has a range of thirty seconds to one four thousandth of a second plus bold bold, of course is anything longer than thirty seconds. You could do up to a sixty minute exposure if you want to do some nighttime photography with it it has a flash sink of one hundred eighty eighth of a second and if you don't mind, I'm gonna go rogue here a little bit fuji says the flash think it's one hundred eighty eighth of a second but I have used this camera with a number of flash units at one two fiftieth of a second and I haven't seen any problems at all and so I would say if you have a flash and you want to shoot it to fiftieth of a second, give it a test see if it works with your equipment with mine I'm getting perfectly good results and so if you need that little extra edge on the flash sink, it looks to be something that is working. But officially the top class sink is one one eighty eighth of a second and the let's see what else we got going on in the shutter got the flash sink and coming soon fuji is one of these companies that is doing an amazing job at listening to people who use the cameras and they're asking, what can we do to make our cameras better? And if they can do that in a software fix, they do that we're going to talk a little bit more about this as we go through, but available soon for the extra one is going to be a new elektronik shutter, and what electronic shutter means is that there is no mechanical movement of the physical shutter on the camera and this is going to allow to things that are going to be kind of fun. One is that it's going to allow for a silent operation of the shelter, and when I say silent, I don't mean like some of the other manufacturers who make a little less noise, this is going to be truly silent. The only noise is going to be the actual pressing of the button on the camera. It is also going to allow shutter speeds all the way up to one thirty two thousands of a second so incredibly fast nobody has a camera that fires that fast on the normal consumer market. Next up, let's talk about the flash. The camera does not have a built in flash, but it does have a flash that is supplied with it it's the little e f x eight, let me go ahead and throw it on the camera here it's, a small, very lightweight flash it's, a most appropriate I would say for phil flash photography so if you're shooting pictures of people that are relatively close by maybe in the eight to twelve foot range it's going to be really nice for adding a little bit of phil light to the eyes and as a guide number of eight that is supplied when you buy the camera the camera unlike I think just about any other camera this price point or below has an actual p c synch and anyone who works in the studio is likely to or possibly going to want to hook up to the p c synch and so this is kind of a pro in feature that's nice to have on the camera now the camera once you put on the flash whether it's this flash which is thie x eight or one of the higher end models that it's more powerful there is a number of controls built into the camera so you can force the flash to work you can use it with slow shutter speeds. You could do a second curtain flash, which is going to give you some fun effects with moving subjects. It can also be used as a commander flash so that you can have the onboard flash controlling other flashes as well. Finally, we know people are liking to shoot video with these cameras these days and so the camera has full hd video both at thirty frames and at sixty frames and in the new firm where that's going to be available in the next couple months they'll also be able to shoot at twenty four, twenty five and fifty frames per second. The camera has a stereo mike built in for great quality sound. It does have a two point five many jack so if you want to hook up an external microphone, you can do that and it records in a very common movie format that is going to be very easy to work with on pretty much all the computers out on the market today. So those air the nine critical factors that I really look at us for us the technical specs when it comes to the camera now if you just want to take a look at the camera if you haven't held this camera in your hand one of the things about the camera is that it's a fairly small and lightweight camera and take off my tripod here for just a moment. And for those of you are wondering, I do have an optional little grip on the camera right now there's a little extra grip on the camera that gives me a little extra nubbin right here to hold onto it's also nice because it gives me access to the battery door so I can get access to the battery and it's very nice because it fits the standard tripod system that I have it slides right on because it has an arc a swiss style mounting system here but what I like most about it is just the extra size on the grip here it's nice when I could hold a camera like this I like a little bit of a grip in a camera that can balance like that it's just a nice way to be able to relax your hand and hold it and then get it back up into position so one of the things that's unique about the camera is this is the first camera in a very long time that has put an ice odile on the top of the camera and this is fantastic because when the camera is turned off or any time you just want to glance down at the camera it's very very easy to see it's kind of like an analog watch where all you have to do is just glance at it and you get a feel for where it set out fuji is also one of these companies that has been the first to re introduce us to the shutter speed dial and so we have an actual shutter speed dial on it as well as an exposure compensation and so when people first saw this camera we've had a lot of talk about retro cameras traditionally styled cameras and we grew used to them for many of us who used him but it's also a great way to work with this equipment, and so they have really done a nice fusion job of traditional controls with a lot of new high tech features. Let me throw it back on the tripod here, because I want to share with you some of the other unique features that are in this camera. All right, all right. So the body itself is a full magnesium alloy body have milled aluminum dials there have a reinforced lcd screen, and the camera is whether resistant and freeze prove to fourteen minus fourteen degrees fahrenheit. And so if you're looking for a rugged camera, if you were going to go climb mount everest and you wanted a mirror elice camera, this would probably be the one to choose it's built really well, it feels very strong in the hands, one of the things that whenever I pick up a cam, right, I kind of give it a squeeze test to see if I hear any creaking. Because on some of the cheaper plastic ones, it just kind of squeeze is a little bit and this one is rock solid. It feels really good in the hands. Another feature, that's been added on to some of the point and shoot cameras recently or the last few years but is on very few of the more serious camera is a panorama stitching mode and so this camera has a panorama stitching moat where you can shoot a whole series of pictures very quickly automatically very simply and you can get a panorama that it can extend a huge rage I'll show you another example of this when we get into the kino we have bracketing with exposure eyes so white balance dynamic range and film simulation so there's a lot of different ways to bracket it is the first camera and the on ly cameron the market that I know of today that uses the new u hs two compliancy for its memory card. So if memory cards just in the side here and you can tell him a dedicated to his user because I have an actual fuji memory card in my fujii camera not that it requires it that's just kind of a bonus but I know exactly which cards thiss cameron goes into but it uses the new u hs two compliant which is going to have a second row of pens I don't have one of those cards yet and it's going to be able to be written to and downloaded even faster about twice as fast as the standard cards that that are out on the market so this is somewhat future proof when it comes to memory cards we've got wifi operations in here so you can operate it from an iphone you can remotely shoot you can remotely see what your camera is pointed out let's see, we got so many things I'm gonna have to get to the keynote here pretty soon we've got multiple exposures we have multiple view moats in the viewfinder we have a new film film simulation mode coming it's not in the camera yet it will be in the new firm where that is stated to be available in december of fourteen and it's called classic chrome and for anyone who likes to shoot and have a particular look to their image a cz we all know fujii made great great film they're going to have a new classic chrome look, which a lot of people have seen the examples and are very excited. One of the other things that I like about this camera that I haven't seen anyone else note is that when you play back a picture and you want to scroll through your images, you use the tabs on the back of the camera and usually when I do this with another camera and I want to get back, you know several pictures to a previous shot that I shot I'll hold the button or I'll turn the dial and it will go picture, picture, picture, picture, picture and on this camera he just goes and you can go through one hundred images in just a few seconds very, very quickly and so it's a very fast reacting camera, so let me get into a little bit of my keynote. So what I'm gonna be showing you now is just kind of a little cut from a class that I have it's a five hour class on this, and I just want to give you a little thirty seconds of fuji film camera history, okay? So they got started back in nineteen thirty four, and most of them know them for making great film for many, many years, and in the early days they specialized in lenses and optical glass, and then in nineteen sixty eight, they started making cameras, and they're one of the first cameras was a medium format range finder camera, and I mean, this actually doesn't look that much different then some of their current cameras, so they've been making cameras for quite some time. If you look through the nineteen eighties and nineteen nineties, you'll see that they made probably the white ist range of cameras on the market, they catered to professionals, they have very unique take on what made a good camera, and they had a number of very popular models with photographers. When digital came around, they were actually taking nikon cameras, modifying them with their own sensors, and I remember when these cameras came out, there was a lot of people who are buying them because of skin tones were so good coming off of their sensors and then everything had a rebirth, you might say in two thousand ten they introduced their retro style x one hundred, which is just completely changed the type of cameras that they have brought out, and then in later in two thousand ten, they brought out the x pro one, which was their first of the interchangeable lenses, and it has progressed very quickly. They brought out a number of different ex model cameras, and the ex pro one is their latest model and probably their best model to date, so what's new and what's great. Why did people generates such a buzz about this camera will and interchangeable lens camera that is, as weather resistant as this is is very unique. The view finder on it is just the best in the industry, the unique sensor system on it enabling super sharp pictures and it's just a small camera, and I don't know that I would want a camera any smaller than this because the size of the controls is just right and met a lot of our needs for that small size but not too small in size and the fujii lenses are going to talk more about the fuji lenses later they have done an incredible job with their lenses I have to admit that they are kind of catering tow middle and higher in users people who are a little bit more discerning with their lenses as far as the optical construction and the mechanical construction when I picked these lenses up they just feel professional in my hand and that's pretty much the entire collection that they make really solid feeling lenses all right? So the fuji x system as it stands today has about five different cameras in it and the ex t one you could argue it's the top of the line but it's definitely up there they have a huge collection of lenses and it is growing very quickly and they're letting us know where they're going which is a great thing I'm gonna show you the fuji road map in a little bit here so the x team won their latest its high end camera it's kind of a different breed they put that hump in the middle where the view finder is in order to accommodate this really large viewfinder on it so let's talk a little bit about how a mere elice camera work some of you may be new to the muralists world and in this it's a little different than the sl ours that's been around for a long time these do use interchangeable lenses very high quality gives us great versatility thie apertures air still in the lands and that's our first way of controlling light light comes straight into the sensor on these cameras and then it feeds that information elektronik lee to the lcd in the back of the camera or in the case of this camera, it feeds it to the dvf and this is that large gbf I've been talking about, and so you have a great view in the view finder and the camera will automatically switch it's got a proximity sensor and its senses whether you're looking through the viewfinder or you're holding the camera out away from you and where you would want to see it with the lcd on the back of the camera. Now what's happening at the sensor level it's kind of interesting and I want to explain what's going on here so normally when you turn the camera on light is coming into the sensor after all, that's what you're looking at in the elektronik viewfinder now when you take a picture, the camera needs to close the first shutter curtain ready itself for the exposure which is going to happen right now and then the second curtain is going to close and that was your exposure and then the second curtain needs to open up again so that you can see through the viewfinder again and this food, this fujii camera does this at eight frames per second and so it's very, very fast movement of these curtains in the camera. Now the main controls on the camera are going to be very easy to figure out we have are on off switch room, which is right around our shutter release. We have to command dials the front and the rear command. Now, unlike many other digital cameras out in the market, we don't use thes styles nearly as much because we have a number of other options on this camera on the back, we have our selector, which is mainly used for navigating the menu system and selecting different focusing points and let's get into the top of the camera and talk a little bit about some of the controls. So, as I mentioned before, this is the first camera in quite a while to have an actual shutter speed dial. Actually, some of the fuji cameras, I should say fuji's first company to put that shutter speed dial back on top of the camera, and so we're going to be able to set shutter speeds from one second to one four thousandth of a second right on the top of the camera. Our flash sink at one eightieth is noted there, so you have a special mark for that. And if you want to get to those third stops that air in between the main stops, you can do that with that front controlled ill so you can get to any shutter speed very, very quickly. Now, if you do need to go for a longer period of time than one full second, you want to go down to the tea set. The tea setting is where you have two seconds through thirty, thirty seconds in third stop increments, and so if you need those longer shutter speeds, just go down to tea or you could go down to be for bulb if you want to go for longer than thirty seconds. So if you want to leave the camera open for two or three minutes or thirty minutes, you could do so in the bolt mode, in which case I would highly recommend using the fuji film our r ninety remote it's, the dedicated elektronik remote for the camera, so that you are not touching the camera when you're actually firing it. Now, as far as controlling the apertures, they have put the aperture ring back on the lands. This's, a way that a lot of us photographers worked for many, many years, and they have put that tactile control. Back on the lands and so let me show you with one of my lenses right here actually let me pull off another one because it's got the switch on it well actually uh I'm gonna have to show you the fifty here and so the fifty here has our and if you listen carefully it's got the click stops in there for even the third stops and so you can set it to whatever aperture you want if you want the camera to figure out the aperture in this case you would just simply said it to a there are other lenses that will have a switch on them that goes from automatic appetite or manual control of the aperture to a physical control of the aperture. Now this particular lens here is the ten to twenty four the apertures air not listed but they're elected tronic lee controlled right here on the lands and so we have a focus as focusing a zooming ring and then our capital ring and this is a really nice control that I think anybody who likes doing manual photography is really going to appreciate. Okay? So we got our manual and auto switch on there and as I was mentioning they have a variety of lenses that have different controls for the aperture many of their lenses most of their lenses in fact haven't actually have an actual aperture dialled on the land some of them have listed apertures on the lenses other ones will be listed electronically, and you're just gonna be able to turn that ring and see exactly where your camera said they have a few lenses that don't have aperture rings, and if they don't have an aperture ring, he would then use the control on the back of the camera to control what aperture you have set. And so they have a wide right of systems to fit up of wide variety of their different lenses. If you want to put the camera in the simplest mode program mode where the camera's going to figure out shutter speeds and apertures, you flip the aperture switch into the a moat for automatic, you take your shutter speed dial and you spin it around to the a setting for automatic shutter speeds, and you're often running doing basic photography. You know, if you do want to make a little bit of an adjustment on shutter speeds or apertures, you can do that with a program shift option by turning either the front controlled ill or the back control dial on the camera so you can get to any combination very, very quickly. As I say, this is not a complete class in this camera, so I'm going to jump around a little bit. I want to jump back and talk about the drive control. Which, as you will notice, is a very tactile manual. Switch on the camera is a rotating collar, and you can very quickly flip it to any of the different modes that are available. So let's, talk about the different modes that you can use in this camera. First off the basic one, of course, would be single frame. This is where I leave my camera most of the time when I want to take one picture it's going to shoot a single picture at a time, but they have a low speed, which shoots at three frames per second. And if you really want to shoot a lot of pictures, the buffer is pretty much unlimited. You can shoot as many pictures as you want in a row at three frames per second. If you want to shoot it eight frames per second, flip it over to continuous h, and this is where I've gotten forty seven j pegs or twenty three raw shots directly in a row, which is a huge number, great for anyone shooting action photography with this ah, little extra note here. If you are going to be shooting at eight frames per second and you are going to be tracking subjects of moving forward and back from you, as you can see on screen, the center nine points of this camera are the ones that are activated with the phase detection pixels the's air the pixels that are a little bit different than the contrast detection and it's going to be best for tracking those subjects. You get extra sensitivity when you have your subject within those nine middle frames, which is often where we're gonna want our action subjects anyway, so it makes very good sense of them regard next up we have bracketing and bracketing is shooting a number of pictures where something changes between these pictures. The bracketing option is nice because you can do anything in manual, but this allows you to do it very, very quickly if you know exactly what you want to be doing. So the main reason that I would use bracketing on a camera would be for exposure bracketing I want to take him syriza pictures that very enlightening and darkness so that I can either work with them in an hdr program laid later or I'm just not sure what the exact exposure is, and so I can shoot very, very quickly in the auto exposure bracketing. But you can also do it with s o film simulation, dynamic range bracketing and white balance so there's a number of different ways that you can set up this camera in this mode for bracketing you can shoot three frames at one third two thirds or full stop increments normally when I do this just as a tip I use aperture priority next up we have multiple exposures and so on this you're going to be able to take multiple photos and combine them together into a single friend and I gotta be honest with you folks when I first saw this in a camera, I thought it was a dumb feature tohave because this is why we had photo shop and we could just put things together in layers but there is an advantage to doing this out in the field if you know that you this is what you want to do with the photo it's going to be a major benefit when you're trying to align two subjects so that they don't overlap on each other and so for anyone who wants to get creative with it it's a nice little tool to have in there on the camera next up is the advanced filter and there's a whole bunch of different looks that you can get teary mentioned so let me show you a bunch of these looks I took the camera out wanted to shoot through and see what these looks air like a toy camera look it's going to darken the corner play with the colors a little bit miniature effect is going to throw a blur across the top and the bottom of the frame we haven't intensify of color here in the pop color option we've put it on a very high key here, very bright and just the opposite. A little bit dark. We've got a little bit crazy with the contrast. Year adds a very dramatic look to the image done kind of a nice soft filter in this case might be nice with portrait and so there's some other ones that you can play with him there. And so if you want to shoot in camera effects without going to the computer, there's a lot of things that you can do right there in camera, and then one of my favorite kind of it extra features in the camera is the panorama option. Having this built into the camera has saved me quite a bit of time from piecing individual images together. It's also saved a lot of bit of file space, so the way this works is that you put it in the panorama mode and you start shooting and it gives you guided directions on how much you need to be panning from one side to the other. And then it stitches all of these images together into one image, and it does a very good job and it's a great way to quickly. Put together a panoramic image and there's a lot of different options that you can do on this, and of course, you can shoot verticals as well. Sometimes we only think about panoramas from side to side, but shooting vertical can work really well for some subjects we have two different sizes of panorama is you can choose a medium size, which is one hundred twenty degrees from side to side, or you can go large, which is one hundred eighty degrees from side to side, and you can pan the camera either horizontally or vertically according to what your needs are per dimension and so there's a lot of ways to set this up for the way that you wanted to work, and then once you're in the panorama mode, you'll be able to use the touch pad on the back of the camera to either change the angle or change the direction because you can pan left or you can pan right, whatever your needs happen to be, so you can see that there is a lot going on in that drive mode. One of the nice things about this camera and a lot of the other fujii cameras as well is that the cameras are becoming mohr and mohr customizable, which means that you get to choose how certain buttons on the camera work and you can re program them so the back of the camera, the touch pad has modes already built in program for you, but if you don't like him, you can go in and change them. The other two buttons that are programmable on the front and the top of the camera and with the new firmware update that will be coming out in the coming weeks, the a e l button on the back of the camera you can see there that will become a programmable function, probably number seven buttons, so you'll have seven different buttons that you can re program. You can switch him. I don't want the white balance here. I preferred over here and there's a number of other modes that you can put in there as well. There's a long list of ways of customizing the camera let's talk about the display on the camera. This camera has some unique things about the way it displays first off we haven't info display, and this is just going to give us a bunch of information about how the camera set up shutter speed aperture what modes has turned on in the camera? Any warnings turned on any special features that you have turned on it, so this is what would show up in the back of the camera on the lcd. One of the options is just the standard view, and this is where I leave the camera. Most of the time, I just want to see a minimum of clutter over my image. I'm gonna have my shutter speed, my aperture, my eyes. So what? Modi man and my exposure that's really all I need, along with my focusing brackets, sometimes I don't want any clutter at all, and I can turn everything off and it's just all image at that point that's when I'm really working on composition, usually, then we have the option of being able to customize what you want in the viewfinder and what you don't want in there. So there's basically a long checklist in the menu system that you can go through and check off. I want this in there, and I don't want that in there. And so this one I have customize s so that it has a few extra things that I use on a regular basis. One of the things that I like and I mentioned this earlier, and this is one of my favorite features on this camera is the focus, distance and depth of field. This is where the camera will show you where the lens is focused at, so right now, in this example, we're focused at one point five meters now, the blue line extending on either side of that is indicating how much our depth of field will give us in focus as we adjust focus those of you, I have taken my basic photography class or any other good plaice will know that is you focus towards the distant you get more things in focus in that blue line would expand, showing you your expanded depth of field that you would have. This is just a great benefit to preview how much step the field of my going to get, and how much does it change if I move back and change focal length a little bit, because it can read a lot of things into what's going on on the camera, including your distance and your aperture, what lens you're working with, and then finally, well, actually there's a hold and here's a list of an example of some of the things that you can turn on in the camera. One of the things that they occasionally like to have on in the camera is the history graham, which is there in the bottom right of that screen, that little mountie graph and that's a real nice thing to be able to see if I'm getting overexposed or under exposed that's another way of having, I think, a much more descriptive light meter in the camera, another feature that I don't like to admit that I need but I have in here is the elektronik level I have a hard time holding camera straight for some reason and by turning on the elektronik level I can see which way the cameras tilted and I know that when I get that green line I have held it properly and I'm getting a nice flat horizon line now something that no other camera has done is a dual display screen in this the view finder in the viewfinder this is not on the back this is in the new finder is so big that you can actually have the entire image on the left and a magnified portion over on the right now on the right hand side that magnified portion is magnified about two times in size so that you can critically focus looking at the right side and then compositionally look at the left side and I know that some people are a big fan of this dual display and there is no other cameron the market that is doing it because they don't have a big enough viewfinder in order to do it on the bottom of the camera I mentioned the image g x t handgrip which especially designed to fit with this camera it's got the hole in the bottom so you can access your battery gives you the better grip and has the darkest swiss tripod played on it we also have a professional vertical grip for it where you can put batteries in there and gives you a vertical grip so for anyone that shoots vertical a lot which I would think sports photographers portrait photographers wanna have that more comfortable hand position they make that nice grip for that and that is the v g x team won. All right, let's get into the good stuff let's talk lenses, fuji lenses how fuji has been pumping out these lenses so fast and they have been doing such a good job. It's really blown my mind because they have come out with so many great lenses to start with let's start on the simple side. They have a couple of budget zooms for people on a budget. They want some nice basic lenses that get the job done that aren't ridiculous in price. And so the sixteen fifty fifty two to thirty are so really good kind of starter lenses, you might say, but when you get a little bit more serious they got some nice serious is it zoom lenses and the eighteen to fifty five is enough to eight f four so it's pretty fast lands and I would be willing to engage in a debate with anyone and my argument is that this is the best kit lands that has ever been supplied with a camera I think it's fantastic and sharpness I got my camera with the kit zoom lens and I have no intention of getting rid of it a lot of photographers will by the camera I'll take the kit lands because it's a better deal and then I want to sell it off on ebay or something it's like no I'm keeping that lands it's small it's sharp and it's pretty fast and so I'm a big fan of it but I love that new ten to twenty four this is one of the whitest lenses that you can filter that his image stabilized I took it to cuba with me great stuff absolutely loved it they have a longer reaching lends the fifty five to two hundred very good quality on that one very well built now you're going to notice that fuji has a lot of different letters and here's your little code on what all these different letters the bbc basically just means they're using a really good coding system on their lenses the xf just means it's an ex mount lands the xy is for their budget lenses one's a little bit lower priced lenses within our have an actual aperture ring those were the ones that I really prefer l am is a linear motor it's a very fast and quiet motor that they use in some lenses the os is they're stabilized lenses and they have a very good stabilization system I have gotten sharp pictures with some lenses down to one full second and so you khun ifyou're pretty good at hand holding you're going be able to get incredibly slow shutter speeds but it's great for anyone who moves a little bit when they're standing and taking a picture, which is everyone because everyone moves a little bit all right? And then ap is this brand new lens they brought out we don't really have time to go into it it's an appetizing filter which enables the camera or the lens to have better brok or out of focus uh elements to it it's a unique thing that I don't know anyone else who currently has an appetizing filter on their land so it's something unique that's come out, they have their eighteen to one thirty five lens. Now it's the lens that we got here on the camera in the eighteen one thirty five is really not much bigger than the eighteen to fifty five lands it's a little bit wider in just a little bit longer, and so if somebody wanted a all in one kid, this would be the lands to have because the cameras weather resistant, the lenses, whether resisted and so they're essentially a perfect match for each other. It's very sharp lands is very well built it's got the aperture ring on it and you know, something that I've been missing on other cameras is a smooth focusing ring and this like all their other fugees is a beautifully smooth it's, as we like to say it's like but it's so smooth, which is really nice and so one of things I don't know if we could get a close shot of it, I'll just hold it right here's this has a rubber seal on the outside of it there's other weather ceiling, but this is the one thing that we can really see and put our hands on it feeling so this has a rubber seal and so when that goes up against the body, it creates a very nice tight seal here, which makes it weather resistant and so that is a really nice lands if somebody wants kind of like that one package for walking around and not carrying any camera bag with them really frees you up and makes it a lot lighter weight. They just introduced a fifty five to one forty a great sports lens it's very fast in nature and coming up soon they're going to have kind of their standard fast lands a sixteen to fifty we'll hopefully see that in the next six months or so I wish I could talk more about each of these I'm just gonna have to let you take a look at him these air, their prime lenses, they've made some really beautiful prime lenses, they have some depth of field scales, they have beautiful manual focusing capabilities each and every one of these is a good lens in their own right? Let I own the thirty five, and I just got the fifty six, and I can't say enough about him there. They're fantastic. One of the things that I love about fuji is they let you know, this is what we're doing, and this is where we're going and here's, what you can plan on from, they don't just hide something and surprise you, like, when are they going to come out with this lens? And so you can see on this chart, they're going to be coming out with a little bit longer? Fast, medium telephoto lens, they're going to have a high speed, wide angle lens, the fast standards coming up very soon, and then they're gonna have a super telephoto. We don't know the exact focal inc they haven't released that, but we know it's in route, so we can kind of make plans about what's coming up. What do I want? A budget my money for? So this upgrade, this software upgrade, coming in december of two thousand fourteen, is going to allow us to have a silent electronic shutter. So if you work in a courtroom, if you want to be really quiet and discreet on your street photography, you're going to be able to do this with perfect silence it's also going to allow us one thirty two thousand of a second so anyone who has one of those one point to really fast lenses is going to be able to shoot with that under the brightest of conditions now the way that the camera does this is with a very unique feature that very few manufacturers are working with these days and it's an electronic shutter and I put together a special graphic a lot of you know that I like to make graphics and so I had to make a special one for this class to try to show what an elektronik shutter looks like basically all it does is it turns on a row of pixels turns it off and then turns on the next row of pixels and then turns it off and it scans through the image very, very quickly and it does this of course silently and so this will be a new thing on the upgrade there's a number of other features I'll just throw him up here on screen. I don't have time to talk about all of them, but they're going to allow us more customization with the camera we're going to be able to customize the q menu the a l button on the back of the camera, we're going to improve the manual or the auto focus override when you're in manual focus one of my favorite things also known as back button auto focusing and so they're constantly looking to figure out how they could make their cameras better and when they can do this, they offer a firmware upgrade and all you do is you go to fuji's website, you look up the camera and you download it to your computer. You put it on a memory card, you put it in your camera and you upload it it's very, very simple it's only going to take about five or ten minutes and you get all sorts of free new features, all right? To kind of close this out. Let me go through how I would actually set this camera up in an operating mode. And here are the ten factors that I think are really important for general day today. Photography and let's do a couple different types of photography first let's do some landscape photography in this case, I like working with a tripod or I'm gonna be holding the camera very, very still, but generally I'm going to be on a tripod. I want lots of things in focus. All right? That's kind of the main thing is I want lots of depth of field. What am I going to do on my camera? Well, I like to work in manual I love working in manual so I could be very specific about the shutter speeds and apertures that I'm choosing, I'm going to choose I so two hundred because that is the optimum quality on this sensor. I'm gonna want a fair bit of debt, the field, it might be eight f eleven of sixteen, it depends on the situation, but a lot of times I'll be round f eleven. Now, if there's nothing moving in the scene, I really don't care where their center speed is, but a lot of times when you're choosing f eleven, you're going to be down in a slower shutter speed, perhaps down around a quarter of a second. But that's going very according to the light metering, I like to use the multimedia ring system in it it's a very good, very versatile system for white balance. I'll leave in an auto unless I'm in under a specific lighting situation that I want to change it to, for instance, I could have it and the fine mode for sun or maybe in cloudy conditions for shape focusing, I'm just going to single focus because my subject is not moving and for the focus area, I could choose either one area or the entire multiple multiple point areas, and then they usually want to be pretty specific. About where I'm focusing, so I'm going to choose a specific area, and then I'll use the touch pad on the back of the camera to direct which point I want in focus and then for the drive mode, I will often use the single mode, and then I'll turn the camera and put it in a self timer mode, or I will hook up a cable released to do it. So this is how I would actually set the camera for landscape photography let's do some action photography, so in this case our subjects are moving, we're going to need to be tracking them with the focusing system, we're going to need faster shutter speeds, and we're going to probably want to turn on the motor drive. I also like to shoot with this in a manual mode, and in this case, shutter speed is very important for human action. I'm gonna want five hundredth of a second or faster if it's something else I may need one thousand two thousand four thousandth of a second. This is where it really pays off to have one of those faster lenses that opens up to f two point eight, and while I would prefer to be a two hundred, I'm most likely going to be a four hundred, eight hundred or wherever I need to be in order to get that shutter speed. The meeting? I'm going to use the multimedia remote again because it is so very versatile in general, I'm just gonna leave my camera in the auto white balance mode because it does such a good job, the focusing I'm going to switch this over to continuous and there's a switch on the front of the camera. It's very quick and simple to make this change over for the focusing area. This is where I might go with the multi area, where it's looking at all forty nine, focusing points that covers almost the entire frame, looking for a movement and able to track it from one area to the next and in the dr mode, as you might guess, I'm gonna put it in continuous high, and that way I could get up to eight frames per second on this camera. And so that's just kind of a little cut from my class is called fast start in the fuji x team, one that is a class that is available at creative live if you would like the full five hour version of it rather than the twenty minute short version you can see about it there. But I think that gives us good insight into this camera, and so with any remaining time, we'll take a look and see if there's any questions that we might be ableto. Answer at this time, but hopefully that gives you a preview about the camera, and I hope I've been able to tap my enthusiasm down on this. I don't want to seem too overboard because this is this is this camera was not sent to me by attaran this is not simply right who do this is my personal camera, and it was very easy to just bring it in and say, yeah, I can talk about my camera and just get super excited about it and that we love is that you do you actually use these and you go and like you say, you took it with you to cuba, so you know it inside and out. We've got a lot of questions about things like, whether did you say that the upcoming silent shutter will be a software change so well, my existing for jx two one be able to be upgraded through a software update? Yes, it will. One of things I should clarify is that food. She just introduced a graphite version of this camera. So it's basically it's, a special coded, different looking camera. It comes with a leather strap and a little special plate that goes in the hot shoe and it's got the new firmware already on it. So if you buy the new camera, you get the silent cheddar, you get the thirty two thousandth of a second as well as all the other firmware updates on the black one you gotta wait a few weeks before this new software change comes in, and I have email back and forth with a couple people at food because I really wanted to make sure that I stated it correctly and from everything I'm hearing, the black one will have this in the firmware update. Fantastic. Is that the same thing with the let's? See, oh, you know, I just lost that question that I was going to ask o atwood expanding exposure bracketing two plus and minus to stop to be a firmware fix that is not a part of the firm where fix that they have now, in theory, that's something that you could request. And so you write your letters to fuji and they might listen to you well, actually kind of funny because gould stephen j says I have the next one and love many things about it, but there are things I would like to see changed where or who it fuji should I write my suggestion? I think I'm not sure who you're supposed to write to I don't have their email address were not able to put that up on the board right now. But we could just check the check the food, see what? Yeah, and find somebody that I think that'll work said there are places where you can send feedback to we've got one says, I'm an ex one hundred s user I love the silent shutter I love the leaf shot allegedly superfast sink speeds if the extra one will have a silent shutter soon, do you know if it will also allow for faster sing speeds like the x one hundred m? Well, no, it will not, because the x one hundred is using a leaf shutter system, which is in the lands and it's it works with basically all shutter speeds. When you use the leaf shatter different dynamics, we don't have time to go into it, but because this is using a focal plane shutter, that is unlikely that that will be a change that they can make in the future. It's definitely not in the december firmware update, but I think that's highly unlikely in the future. The focal plane cheddars have typically been limited to two fiftieth of a second on most of these style cameras, and then maybe too much just very quick ones. You said the camera was weather resistant, so how well does it handle water? Well, you know, no company is perfectly clear on it can take a two inch per hour rain for four hours. And so it's got a lot of weather seals in it, and if it was my camera and it is my camera, I would not have a problem going out and shooting if it was raining, but it never rains here in seattle. But if it did rain at some point, I would not have a problem going out in the rain and shooting. Now, with the weather sealed lens and a weather steel body, the question is, how long would I be out in the rain? You know what? I shoot an entire sea hot game out in the rain? I might not want to push it. I probably go for a rain cover, but if they said, you know, if you want to run down to the field, they always do this. They just you want to come down on the field, take pictures for fifteen minutes. You probably when it needed at that point and so it's it's the light rain I wouldn't push it too far because there it's not specifically stated fantastic, maybe a final one struck man fifty three do you anticipate any news from food you about a newer model of sixty one fokina? And then also can you use any of your of his full frame? Nikon lends with an adapter okay, I absolutely would not expect anything from photo came because at this point now everything's been announced, and if it was announced food, she had their big announcement day a few days ago, they announced no cameras with interchangeable lenses. I would expect at some point down the road, there will be a successor model because there is for virtually all cameras, but it looks like right now, fuji's kind of concentrating on lenses, and so I think it's a safe time to buy, you might say, because some people is there a new model on the cusp of coming out? It doesn't look like it to me, and there was a second part to the question that I completely that's great. Can nikon use full frame lenses with it within a way to spend up to canada as well? The fujii makes their own adapter for using like a lens is there are other companies that use adapters that you can mount a variety of other lenses, and I've looked at that it's kind of interesting, but I'll be honest with you. I'm not a big adapter guy because I like picking up a camera and I like it to work. I want the auto focus to work, I want the meeting to work, I want all the displaced work, I just wanted to work without fussy and I am willing to buy a new lands, not to fuss, because that saves me time in the actual shooting. And so there are third party adapters that you can get out there. I I haven't seen anybody with a nikon lens on their fuji camera in theory, it's possible. But in my own personal opinion, I don't recommend it unless there's, unless it's just absolutely has to be done. For some reason, they have such a great collection of lenses. They're coming out with him so fast, if you could. If you can live with the fuji lands, which are also, I would go with that.
