Finishing with Patina
So quenching see a perfect amount of time barely heard anything and now I'm gonna drop that into my pickle now we are going to be doing a patina has a finish on our peace and so with the patino we're going to be using livers sulfur which is this right here it comes in we're using a gel form but it also comes in a form that uh uh is crystalline form. So this also works better hot just like our pickle does pickle in the pickle pot or in our crock pots over here. So I am going tio come over to arc front crock pot here and add into our hot water just two drops is fine cities the tip and here you have a spoon or anything else making the tip into my brush dropping it in there the solution's going to turn yellow wait no, we're nice and good opponents that way. Now once this piece comes out of the pickle it what kind of finish you want on it totally depends on you, so I reference a few different sand papers that you can use. Two twenty three. Twenty, four hundred, six hundred this becomes a ma...
tter of preference. If you wanted to look a little textured, you could actually just use a scotch bright flat pad to clean it up or some of the other samples if you want to really say smooth finish then you would go through all the stating steps start with your two twenty then you're three twenty then your four hundred get it nice and smooth then you can drop it into your patina but the idea is that soon as you put your patino is your last step just like with polishing its your last step so you want tio do all your standing filing finishing like that all before if you had to clean up any sauder you can clean up sauder by either sanding it or by filing it away if it's excessive so let's actually take a look at our peace here and I'll point that out to you yes warm is the water of the setting sun so on a pickle pot a kid crockpot um having it on low is good you never wanted to be boiling um if it's steaming it's fine but you don't want it to be us the low setting on most crock pots is fine for the liver sold for just warm like sometimes I don't feel like doing a huge part of it all just um take a jar of water and put in the microwave for two minutes and then just warming up such a steaming and it just speeds up the process you could do it um not as you know not first long doesn't have to be as hop it just takes longer so oddly enough, I just put the right amount of sauder on the front of this so it's a little hard to seize her money do a little close up here to see how the sauder flowed but if you take a look there right into that joint so right here you kind of see a different color and that's the sauder you see little difference kind little curved shape there a little bit of it's not quite on this it's it's a little bit and there's a little bit of on the front of it here there's a little pink next to accept a little bit of flux that they're still but that puddle that discoloration right there is your sauder now hard sauder is the best color match to sterling so that's where this is medium and as you grade eight down it gets a little more yellow so it'll be more noticeable on the copper this didn't get quite as clean as it could have been but this is for instance what I was mentioning if there was too much sauder so this right here this flowed into our texture there now there is way of protecting your metal purposely dirty your metal so that it won't sorter won't flow in certain areas and you could do that by like I could've paying this whole texture area prior to saw during with paint pen with sharpie with white out and that would have protected the metal so the water didn't want to flow there it's not a guarantee, mind you, if you melted off, it may happen, but it can help protect it from happening. So that kind of shows you the access that could happen. So you clean this piece here a little bit. Now the beauty of this is that it really can make your texture pop and that's why we like a patina patina it makes your texture to sing so I'm gonna drop this piece in there and I'll show you I'll drop both of them and they're just you kind of see the difference there into our livers sulfur over here now at this point to you could switch over to a different type of tongs rubber tipped tongs which I believe are over here. Here we are so this you would want to use this at this point and this goes for when you're handling something polish because it's soft it's not going to scratch your metal, where if you like picked up the pieces with your regular tongues, they basically they can scratch the metal. And if he's been all this time saying it making all nice and pretty and smooth, then you might you know you could ruin your finish that way sort is picking this up and we're dropping it in there now I'm gonna hold it here she kind of see it goes through several levels of color changes and what we're going for is a blue black and won't go fully black, but it will go a blue box you see, it started to kind of change some color he propped the khun see here it's starting to go yellow the longer you leave it in there and how new the solution is well kind of show you it will speed up the process so you can see it we're trying to get an orange here and eventually will go black just like our peace here it could go a little darker than that, so pretty ah not quite blue yet and I say blue black because it's not true black there's, other solutions that you can use to create lotina's jackson's, a company that provides premade petit knows that they have something referred to a silver black, and that will give you a really black black but it's kind of doesn't connect to your metal very well. It kind of gets a little bit more chart cool feeling kind of flaky and it's not as good of a connection or adherence reaction to react to the metal in the same way so doing using those I don't personally prefer it livers, sulfur there we go it's a nice black we won it is kind of a better way to go I believe that in there for a second so this could get a little bit darker, but let me show you how this works so your whole piece is going to get black there's no way around that. The idea, though, is you take the abrasive that you left off on and you're going to take it off a little bit on your silver this is going to create kind of a gray or effects now, whatever abrasive you left off on, you're going to see those scratches that's why you kind of see these scratches a little bit here fromthe scotch right back that's kind of abrasive. Now you can dip your piece multiple times and create layer upon layer of a liver sulfur to deepen the color as well as give you kind of more layers of it here shin to the metal so it kind of lasts longer, especially when you're doing wearable piece is this is really important with rings to and actually talk about this again soon. Um that it having thicker layers means it'll last longer because it will rub off overtime onto your skin so this piece can kind of be dropped back in here we'll see how are our copper is doing that's where it's really gonna pop so crab are copper silver piece out of here so we have and this will get a little darker you can stop it in between things but it will uh so you can create different color levels so I'm just lightly standing this out we can see how it's really making the texture pop and once again you can layer this and layer of this clean up the silver a little bit and you can create a really nice finish so if you want to make it a little bit shiny that's another option to but this is the end result that you're going to get you can buy any premade chain that's what we did hear premade chain that already had a clasp on it so you're easily set that through your bail and attach it so when you make your bail the size that we did it allows for various thicknesses of chain is there any questions? It's beautiful yeah, we have questions here is there a way to patina if you didn't like it at all? You can just continue to stand it often it'll come off and there are certain chemicals we don't have time for me to get into at the moment that you can use to like just quickly get it all off all right and so that is our finished piece here kind of just a quick little synopsis of how to sauder um and create kind of a nice a layering effect with two different metals
