Paying Attention to Your Obsessions

Paying attention to your obsessions, also known as these are a few of my favorite things, right? And now we're going to get into the details of your flaws and you're right, I don't know if you've ever read this. Anything written by this genius, dolly parton um but she says you've got to find out who you are and do it on purpose. I'm just repeating what? What? What she has said this is really important in in my in my book I had, um, in writing it, I had a lot of, uh, titles that I thought would be appropriate so I just in the in the in the manuscript I sent to my my friend paul, I kept all the titles and there I was like, I don't know about this for this, you know, lucas suggested my son suggested a title I made up some title, they all made sense, you know, american bad ass like a pretty fun that was that was a little bit too much, you know, I was like james that's trying too hard, totally live totally nude. I thought you could use someone to pick up a book. That's a line right my way, ...

big frank sinatra song fan my heroes have always been cowboys, but but so here's here's some more do as I do as I say not as I do stop copying me so anyway way get over here and there's a there's a there's one that's called girls bunnies in america right? Actually it's on the slide you got a drink there ever was like I'm going to sue this company um girls bunnies in america actually underneath his tombstone you know why great moustache movie underneath it done is better than perfect and actually perfect is spelled wrong here says dunn is better than prefect but girls bunnies in america why to me is that a good title? I will tell you because if you go through my book there is a visual vocabulary that I have and that's what you guys have to seek out in you're working your work visual vocabulary you know, when we work we you know if we get a new job we don't go, you know ah beers air really in style and people seem to like flannel shirts we should put those in there were you know we don't go searching outside because we have a visual of ocalan we have things that we respond to, we have these obsessions these things that we love girls bunnies in america encapsulates a little bit of that to me I love women I always have I love their parts and love their hair right so you go through my book there's boobies and there's legs and there's butts and there's hair and there's you know women's parts hooray for girls there's money's there's natural history there's bones there's cows and chickens and there's natural history I like that I'm interested in those on bears america their social, cultural political statements because I was raised in military and I have a deep love for my country my country girls bunnies in america the only thing I left off was rubber tires anything with rubber tires anything you can raise baby I love um again it is the idea of like, put it in your work put it in your work um you know this guy george lucas okay have a great story, not the story out great observation it's called electric elaborate thx eleven thirty eight four ae b you guys know the reference to him that this is ok his you do ok, you guys and diet. So here you go, it's actually just called thx george lucas grew up in the midwest in what he thought was a, um kind of oppression that's a society because he was born an artist he was born in in like farming community he loved racing vehicles so he'd steal cars and race them actually almost died in a car wreck and decided from that that he had to pursue his dream and be an artist and he moved to california went to u c l a film school his senior film project was called thx eleven eighteen eleven thirty eight four ae b electrical labyrinth that was his senior project he got out of school and he's ahead of power who uh francis ford coppola who said hey I like this project let's make it into a feature film became his first feature film starring robert duvall called thx eleven thirty eight is shortened it um the film is about ah young man growing up in an oppressive society who had dreams of going of a better life elsewhere and at the end of the film is a car chase with a souped up mcclaren I think it's a mclaren a souped up mcclaren off into the sunset right so that's his first movie his second movie is called american graffiti and that's about ah young man living in an oppressive society who has dreams of going living elsewhere and in it are too hot rods one is in a yellow deuce driven by harrison ford and the license plate is thx his third movie takes place a long long time ago in a galaxy far, far away and it's about a young man living in the present society who has dreams of living elsewhere and in it is a hot rod driven by garrison ford called the millennium falcon and you know was a hot rod because when princess leia season for the first time she says you came here in that right if a chick says that about your car it's a hot rod his next project because now he's got a big sound studio is he now controls the sound how you listen to movies and you hear it every time you see a new movie and it goes ah local comes up in the logo says thx right can you imagine working for george lucas he coming and going james I've got this awesome I got a great idea for a front for a film you go like thx because yes his thx in all of his movies and if star wars if you pay attention start would you see it everywhere it's on droids numbers it's everywhere it's crazy it's a license plate and the themes hot rods throughout his movies the theme of a young man seeking the life elsewhere is in his movie the journey of the hero we call it is in his movie um hot rods the young man thx what's awesome about that is for us mortals we understand that we don't have to make shit up we all have that we all have our own visual vocabulary our own story that we want to tell he's just telling his own story and finding different formats to do it you don't have to make so you don't have to go man what did they want and how am I going? Well, beards or cool uh, there's a show about cakes and we can do a cake, right? What's popular? No, you're popular. You just don't know what yet that's how it works. This is interesting, it's this it's this list that you have inside you already, and you're just afraid you're afraid to access it and you're afraid to put it out into the world. And I know I understand because I'm afraid to access it, and I'm afraid to put it out into the world. So we had this show that we have every every tuesday that we put. What we put out in new york on every tuesday is called burning questions it's a little video thing, we've got some interviews that we just did. We did an interview in austin, we didn't interview here two interviews here, we're trying to trying to blow it up, but it was my beautiful wife's idea she had the idea a year before we started, you know why it took that long before her idea so time we did it cause you said, james, we've got all this content and we have to get it out and video is the way the internet and video is the way and I said, darling that's an excellent idea who are we going to get to play me? Because you know why? Because I wasn't perfect. I was like, wait, I have to be in front of a camera everyone away no that's not gonna work and one thing I've learned from like storytelling and following george lucas and finding george joseph campbell and stuff is that is that you all? All of you all of us have a dragon in our lives and there is also a cave right dragon's guard caves in that cave is everything you want, it's everything you want and in front of it is the dragon so burning questions for me is the cave and all the riches and standing in front of that is the dragon and you know, the dragons name right? It wasn't beautiful don't look at it it's ego because we're afraid of looking bad we're afraid that we're not perfect we're afraid that we have flaws oh my god everybody's got flaws flowered them show them that's what people want that's the good stuff fact perfection don't worry about it and here's the interesting part if you do that then what's happening is you will get paid to be yourself I'm working very hard to get just to get paid to be james victoria you want to get paid to be an dirado you want to get paid to be franco paid to be paused that's awesome cool cool love it I love it when you guys were goingto go out into the world and you whip some shit up oh my gosh um so later for tomorrow listen if you don't have your homework you can get in the room them's the rules I didn't make him right so the litter remember the brief and people online I think it's you know that's it's it's a downloadable thing right chris it is a downloadable thing the other brief actually you can download that when you are a sleepy for free for the course so check it out if you haven't done it yet awesome and the one final thing is we had a question about where ideas come from and where does genius come and I will give you um one clue sleep so don't stay up all night you know like because if you're staying up all night working on this it's going to stink like work don't do it get a good idea go find some place to chill even I think the offices and places here going to be a bill just find a place to chill you might want to get together as a group or in small groups and chat about it and then go and get a good night's sleep because I am gonna work you tomorrow because they're awesome I love you online good job good job you in the pajamas I see excellent lovett audio's

I am not a graphic designer, I'm an artist, but this class translates beautifully. James' teaching style is nothing short of delicious - fresh, alive, fun, exciting - while being full of depth and poignant, valuable content, much of which transcends medium and brings value to any creative individual. I found particular value in the lessons around tools (and altering tools), the criteria for good work, the need to infuse your opinion into your work, the value of abandoning perfection, paying attention to cancer that is one's ego and that we are meant to be creators, and not 'the help'. More than anything else though, I benefited from being reminded, with such a burning passion, that we are not put on this earth to pay a mortgage and support a family, but to identify our true work and to bring it into existence in this world. So nice to reminded of something I know but forget on a regular basis. One of the best online classes I have ever taken - a real home run.

Came to this course (and site) via Anna Dorfman's blog. Loved the motivational and philosophical aspects of the course. Very entertaining and inspirational. Also loved listening to Victore discuss his own work and process-- the stories of how he got specific ideas, tinkered with them, perfected them, etc.. As for the critiques of student and online work, I didn't find them very useful. I would love to see him pick out a few of the very best, and then give his own short and sweet-- and specific-- insights into how HE would improve them. Or just abandon the critiques entirely and instead show and discuss more of his own or other successful designers' work. Overall, fun and inspirational, with some helpful tips.

I loved this course! Exceeded every notion I had. The design, concepts and principles were fun, funny and insightful. But James went so far beyond the "poster design" and into the philosophy, thinking, inspiration - huge! I am so glad I watched this course not only for the quick wit and fast humor (Jame's is smart! Sharp... And Really Funny - compliments his teaching and design), but the reading list he suggests, ways to nudge your creativity and the fashion with which he gets you thinking... Invaluable! Organic, Rich, Impact and message - this course has the design "how-to" covered, the real pearls are Jame's humble experience and generosity. Great Course... Oh, and check out his book! "Victore! or, Who Died and Made You Boss?" Inspiration and fun!
