So let's talk a little bit about lenses here, so a lot of different lenses and cannon has a lot of different letters that they use. The f stands for electronic focus l stands for their luxury brand or siri's of lenses is their best quality lenses. I'll talk more about this in a moment. Many of their lenses now have I s or image stabilizers built onto him not all of them. Some of them do some lenses are second generation lindsay so they mayday sixteen thirty five they made anew version of it that's better optics that's maybe I second version they actually have some that are now coming out that are third generation you might see the usm this is basically a very fast and quiet motor it's the ultrasonic motor you might see some lenses and if you're stepping up from older, smaller frame cameras known as e f s lenses, the s stands for short back focus and these will not work on the five d mark three so canon e f s lenses will not even mt on the camera at all. ause you won't be able to get him on your camera to damage it, but if you are stepping up from older cameras that r f s time to sell those on ebay and craigslist and move up to the standard e f lenses different lenses will have different buttons on them, but some of the nicer lenses might have some of the ones that you see all of them will have wealth. Some of them excuse me, we'll have a focusing limiter. What this does is it narrows the search range of where the camera or the lens is going to focus. So if you were, say, shooting soccer you can be pretty sure with the telephoto lens that you're not going to be shooting subjects within five feet of you and so you could block that off on the land so it's on ly searching from infinity down to ten feet or five or fifteen feet or whatever the option is. All of the lenses will have an auto focus or manual focus which be aware of where that isthe some cameras well or some lenses will have stabilisers and some will have different stabilizing modes. So there's mode one mode to mode one is for normal handheld use and mode too is panning. And what it's doing is in the stabilizer mode there's a pitching ya system so they have a group of lenses that air controlling one direction and they grew another group that is controlling another direction and what happens is it turns off one of those but not the other and it can detect when the camera's vertical or horizontal and can I throw a question out to the internet I know the answer to it, but I just I want to send a bunch of people scurrying for an answer, and that is on some lenses. There's, a mod three wants somebody to see if they see the first person to find the right answer for mode three. All right. And, uh, I'm gonna continue on the way, and we'll check back with that in a little bit. All right, next up, if you have some of the fancy l lenses there's going to be a little red dot or perhaps a red line on the focusing, uh, window of your lands and what this is referring to is an infrared index infrared index. If your focus if you're shooting infrared like with an infrared filter, infrared light is in a slightly different lands in a slightly different way than standard light, and you need to focus your lens a little bit differently. So this is gonna be a good time for manual focusing, and do we already have an answer or something going on? We already have some answers. My favorite so far is our friend, same cox who says mode three is equal self destruct? What else do we weigh have mowed three very active, but the doug stroud says mode three is for mono pod use incorrect in cracked wrong, wrong mowed three equals beast mode enhances optical image stabilizer no don't is that it all sassy sweet diva there's a long one here from us two three it's it's a very short answer I guess we can let him sweat it out a little what will continue and we'll come back don't worry about lazy mode phone lenses long lenses no that's not it either up it down that's it all right we're moving on moving on will come back one more one more nerd glasses mode oh your glasses mode yes mold three for me all right moving on let's talk about some l lenses so l is the premium a collection of lenses from from canada if you have a five day mark three you are probably going to have one or more or hopefully a large collection of el lenses and so what can I recommend from cannon will pretty much kill any l lens is going to be very good but obviously the holy trinity the two point eight zoom's the sixteen to thirty five twenty four to seventy and the seventy two two hundred these air all version two lenses so they are very advanced they are had previous models out there and they made improvements the optics the glass quality in the is very very good so any of these three are going to be great lenses with this camera I am also a big fan of kind of the f for zoom group right now, I have a seventeen to forty on my camera, which I think works quite well. Ah lot of landscape photographers don't need that two point eight aperture, and so the four lands is a very good buy because it's less than a thousand dollars the upper two point eight lenses are going to sell anywhere from fifteen hundred to twenty three hundred dollars thie f four range is going to be anywhere from eight hundred twelve hundred dollars the twenty four to one or five, which is kind of the standard kit lens is a pretty good lands dealing little hits that I don't like on it is that there is a lot of barrel distortion at twenty four on it now that can be fixed in camera and later as well, but it it's kind of the main little great that a lot of people have on that one. And then the seventy two, two hundred four is a fantastic lands for anybody who wants to travel with a telephoto lens, a little bit lighter weight who doesn't need that two point eight aperture and for a lot of photography, the f four works very, very well ok, so these lenses are from one thousand to two thousand dollars. And I know you've just spent roughly three thousand dollars on your camera, but I think if you're shooting this camera you probably owe it to yourself to own one of these lenses if you confined use of them, you can probably find good use and it's really nice when you have a camera on this level and the lens of this level on your camera it's really operating at the very highest standards that that are being done now don't say you need to buy all five of these I'm I consider myself very fortunate I own too and I love shooting with those lenses they're just so sharp I love shooting with shallow depth of field in some cases they're so bright and easy to see through so I can't recommend these enough they're just really nice lenses in see if you can find the budget to put one of them in your camera bag at some point in the future. All right, not everyone has a ton of money to spend on lenses, so here is some great non l lenses so these air non l lenses and they can still be very good on the camera. Cannon recently introduced these two lenses twenty four two twenty eight they're kind of unusual because their prime lenses they're not overly fast but they're reasonably fast two point eight and they have image stabilizer is built into him and they're really small and so these could make some really nice lenses. They're eight hundred eight hundred fifty dollars on dh if I could be a little sack religious here for a moment uh the new tamar on twenty four to seventy is getting some fairly nice reviews out there. The new cannon twenty four to seventy is a about double this in price minutes about a thousand dollars more what's unusual about the twenty four to seventy is that it has vibration control which the nikon cannon versions of this do not have and so this is an additional feature you're going to get more features for less money? Is it optically as good as the cannon? Well, I haven't seen those test results and I'm going to bet the cannons a little bit better, but I think for many people who want a good general purpose zoom lens this tamron for around thirteen hundred dollars is gonna be a very good linds I'm considering it myself. I haven't made that decision yet. All right, one more slide for you on lenses. This is what I call the best bang for the buck. All right, so you want some some economical lenses that do a very good job for the money these lenses self for four hundred to six hundred fifty dollars, which in canon lens terms is jake dirt cheap and so a couple of wide angle down there pretty fast wide angle that eighty five one eight great portrait lands and the seventy two, two hundred zoom lens in the middle is the original version which doesn't have image stabilization so that's the downside to it but it's the least expensive l lens in the collection it's around six hundred forty dollars and so all of these I think are good lenses to have and very good values and so if you spent you spent your whole bank on the cameron you don't have much in lenses these would be a good way to direct your money until you could upgrade to those l lenses and so that kind of brings my official section so we can go ahead, takes more somewhere answers for the three question and take other questions as well before we had lunch all right, we got it seems like a lot of people for the mod three have been saying mode three compensates shake in a direction perpendicular to the direction beginning when panning is detected and gives the equivalent effective shutter speed four stops faster no, no people just totally guessing I would think these people like they're at their computer google cannon I asked three what does it do? It's kind of hard point hybrid what is it hybrid great tracking action no no it's like no one's even close you know what you want to take you got scared. I'm scared to even toss it out. It is not for the photographer this moving, it stops the movement out there that you should be happy now about raul says mode three turns off I s when the shutter is released. No. Yes, ugo some people don't like the look when they're looking in the viewfinder. It there's a little bit of a seasick. Look to it personally, I kind of like it, but some people, they want to save battery power, or they don't want to see it. The only one I asked to take place when the picture is actually being taken. So what it does is it monitors the movement, and it turns iis on for just a fraction of a second and it's on ly on some of their really big six hundred eight floors for hundred to aids. Things like that. So you're not going to see it on normal price lenses, like a two thousand dollar lands it's, the ten thousand dollar lance is very good way should have a prize like glasses. Go ahead with that way, have had several kind of questions from lots of people in a chat room. Uh, asking and as well as being written about on the internet on the fuel, the five d mark three is having some a light leak issues video I don't know if you could address that. Well, I don't know about the video problem, but the light leak issue, so let me explain the lightly, lightly light league issue. So what some people found is that when shooting at nighttime, under really dark conditions, when they had their cameras set to auto exposure, so program shutter, priority program, and they pressed the light button on on their camera, that light would somehow work its way through the camera to the light meter and affect the light near. And so it was only in the most extreme circumstances that this was going on, and this is a fault on cannons part not checking this out, but I also have to say, if you were shooting night time exposures, what the heck are you doing with your camera and auto exposure? Pretty much not, uh, not being that meat, but I mean, pretty much every time I've done that, I'm shooting manual exposure, and so it's, you don't need the meter that so what cannon has done is they fix the problem, and so somebody took an old camera and a new not that five mark three is old, but they took the original version and the new fixed version, and they basically put a piece of almost like duct tape so that light would not leak there and so you'd be pretty hard pressed to find where that would affect anyone so if you are very concerned you bought one of the very first ones that came out you might be affected too this I think you can send your camera back to cannon but boy I don't even know if he'll be worth it sending it all the way back to have him take it apart to get a piece of duct tape inside the camera which is essentially what they're doing it it's probably something much much higher quality than duct tape it's like cindy foil or something like that so that's that's like leak issue and that so far has been the only technical issue that I've heard of problems with the camera the complaints of the original one okay a question from hello time chow too what's the difference between the eoe s cinema lens and a regular us still lens the cinema lenses have different focusing and or zooming rings on them and potentially aperture rings on them so that you can do more fine tuning adjustments the focusing on a on a still camera is designed to focus from point a to point b extremely quickly in video that doesn't matter they want to put focus on point a to point b in the most smooth manner possible so we want a ferrari to get from a to b they want a cadillac and there's a whole different focusing system that they put in there so that it's very smooth the length of the travel, the size of the grip and how it's, how it started and the same thing goes with apertures. We work in third stops, and sometimes they want to change the aperture while they're shooting, and so they need to continuously changing. And so, uh, optically, they're not better in in any general sense, I mean, they're optically different and they may be better. They may be worse, they don't need to meet its highest standards because hd is much lower resolution, your camera can shoot a still picture with and so it's basically the controls of what of what the lens is doing is the major difference. Um, see megan magnus, photography is asking when using back, but focus do you keep holding down the back button while you are taking the picture? Depends on the type of shooting you're doing for a still shot a person just standing there, it works in a similar way is the front button. I will press down until the camera achieves focus and then I'll release my finger and then I might recompose if I'm shooting sports, which I do from time to time, I don't like using the back button. If you did want to do that, you would have to leave it down as you press down on the shutter release and you have to have both fingers press down on this camera at the same time. I turn this off when I go into a sports mode because sometimes I'm shooting with two cameras and it's. I grab a camera and my my thumb's, not in the right position, but I can always get to the shutter release, and so I want to have that linked when I'm shooting sports. And so the back button focusing is something that you may want to turn on or off, depending on the style of photography that you shoot and whether you like that shooting or not. Okay, one last question, because I smell pizza way too tired to take a break, but, uh, from june, can you change zoom settings after using the focus lock and maintain sharp focus? Or does it really depend on the lens, for example, true zoom versus variable focal length? If so, how do you know which lenses are true? Zoom who very sophisticated questions. She gets the nerd glass order on that one on and very well stated as well, so this gets a little complicated, but my glasses back home might have to sew on original zoom lenses. You used to be able to zoom in close focus and then zoom back to a wide angle setting. It was all in focus. Then the optical engineers designing the lens figured out that they could make their lenses smaller with less elements, but the lenses would have to refocus. And so the original were true zoom lenses, and now I believe they're called retro focus lens is so it is better, and the thing is, is that cannon doesn't list which ones are, which you could do a little testing, but generally what I have found is that you should focus at zoom setting. You are going to shoot out. You can either do focus lock with the center one, you can use one of the outside points and just lock on that as well. But I wouldn't do zooming. It may work on some lenses just fine, but I have seen it not work on enough lenses, and I haven't been able to figure out which ones are, which that I say it's, probably better just to keep the zoom setting where you're gonna have it when you focus.

I really enjoy any John Greengo class - beside being an incredible photographer, he has the true nature of a teacher. What a combo: a fantastic photographer with a great sense of humor who can really explain complex concepts and take the fear out of all of those buttons and dials! I LOVE his 'tests' and visual challenges: the immediate results help to cement the information. I have had my Canon Mark D III for almost a year now. The time I spent experimenting with it and reading most of the manual (ok, maybe I am a nerd!) was great preparation for this class as I knew exactly the things that were confusing me. And, as usual, Mr. Greengo delivered. So glad I purchased the course so I can review it many times. Only two disappointments: unless I missed it, it wasn't made clear how to switch from one card to the other. I was in Scotland and my screen kept flashing, "card is full" - and I couldn't figure out how to switch to the other one; and I did want to fill in the copyright/name information but can't figure out how to 'type' in anything. Class is a must for a new owner of this camera.

Wonderful, wonderful instruction! I wish every instructor could be as point-on as John Greengo. I had my money's worth about a quarter of the way through the class. At the end, I called it priceless. I have had my 5D Mark iii for almost 2 years, and John taught me some extremely useful things about the camera I did not know. Even if you are an advanced shooter with considerable 5DMiii experience, you are likely to get something valuable from this course - otherwise, you are CERTAIN to get really valuable knowledge about your camera. Strongly recommended for Canon 5D Mark iii owners.
