Class Introduction

So yeah we're gonna talk about creating an online portfolio. And first I wanna sort of talk about what I mean by portfolio. It's sort of an, all encompassing term and so whether or not you're a photographer, and you wanna showcase your photos, or maybe you wanna showcase your photos as a book or just a way to sell your photography services and put in a price list in there or maybe you're a crafter and you create jewelry or handmade stationary and you want to show off your products, maybe your products are something like you're a real estate agent and you wanna show off either properties that you've sold in the past, kind of highlight those and the types of things that you can do, or you've got your current properties for sell that you want to list as well, you can create that into a portfolio. So it's basically a showcase, a portfolio, whatever you call it in your industry is totally fine but we're gonna take everything together, we're gonna put it together in InDesign and then what we...

're going to come out with on the other end is a digital output of some kind. So we're going to distribute it digitally. So you may also be doing it in print and a couple times through the class, I will talk about some differences, whether you're going to print and or digital but for the most part, we're going to focus on the digital output and the last segment we're actually going to talk about a few specific digital output types. So we're going to be thinking about that as we go ahead into, jumping into a project. We wanna think about where this is going to be consumed if you will. So is it going to be something that we want to put on our website that everybody can see? So maybe you're a photographer and you just want a showcase of your images and you wanna put it on your website, something that they can download and look at. And where will that be consumed? Sitting at a computer? Will it be on a tablet? Is it something you might wanna look at on a phone? So for instance, if you are that real estate agent and you've got current projects or properties that you want to showcase, they might be looking that on a phone while they're walking around or talking with you about a property, they might be scrolling through and looking at other properties you have available. So just always be thinking about where that needs to go in the end and again, if you are also doing a print component, we need to think about that as early as possible in the workflow. At least with digital, we have a little bit of leeway, we can kind of start putting things together and then make some tweaks later for the actual digital output. So basically think about that. Think about who your audience is. If you think, oh this'll be great with inner activity and I wanna put it on a tablet, well we're gonna see that we might run to some issues that way if we got too much inner activity. Or maybe if we're thinking, it's going to go on a tablet, it's gonna have all these great bells and whistles and it's something that we can actually put online but maybe our audience isn't that tech savvy. So maybe keeping it simple in that case. Most people know what to do with a PDF these days, most computers know what to do with it automatically, most tablets have something to read it automatically. So sometimes keeping it more simple is the better way to go. So always be thinking about how it's being distributed. Where do you control that? Do you know for sure it's going say, on an iPad if you've got, let's say you're a sales rep and you've got your product or you're a sales team and you've got your product and you want your reps to be out there showing off your product, well you might know that they all have iPads, specifically iPads and so you can really hone in on the items that are available on iOS specifically because you know where that's going to be consumed. So again, just be thinking what happens after it leaves. But before we get to that point, where we're outputting all that, we need to actually start in and put something into InDesign.

This course was so jam-packed with valuable and clear information. I had avoided InDesign as I found it very overwhelming learning it all on my own. Here, Erica explains perfectly how to do so much with this software, and how to do it easily. I am now excited to get back on InDesign. This course is really for a lot more than just creating a portfolio. Thank you!
