The Do's And Don'ts Of Ideation
This is our starting point now. We have kind of gone wide, now we've gotten a little bit narrower with this working how might we statement, and then the next phase in the design thinking process will be about ideation, but before we get to possible ideas that would solve this question or challenge, we want to demonstrate the dos and don'ts of ideation, which you guys will do with me, so you guys can come back a little bit closer. We don't need the board for this. We're just gonna have a conversation. So we're gonna role play two different scenarios to demonstrate to everyone like, the dos and don'ts of ideation in general, but through the lens of planning the ultimate party. So it can be a party for your birthday, it could be for watching a sports event, it could be about whatever you want. But we're gonna do it two ways, the first way is the No Buts, so we're gonna be super prickly for this one, so you're the puffed up blow fish, you're gonna be super prickly, and whoever has an idea,...
like, we're gonna make it the best party ever, so you gotta, like, really, kind of make sure that the idea is awesome, okay? So let's start, so this is, why don't we think about like the wrap party for this class, right? How are we gonna plan the most awesome party for this? All right, it has to be perfect, because this is my first time at Creative Live, (group laughs) And it really has to be awesome, and I'm kind of leaving it up to you guys to plan me the most awesome party. No pressure. (audience members laugh) Multiple cakes. Multiple cakes? All right, I like chocolate, but I hate, I hate those like sprinkles so you can't have sprinkles. 'Kay. Who do you want here? Just the people who came to class today. And only some of the crew members, only the ones I like. (group laughs) Just kidding, I like everyone, all right, come on, more ideas (snaps fingers rapidly). Live DJ. Live DJ? Yeah Oh, that'd be really awesome Although, I don't really like, it can't be like EDM or anything, 'cause we're, it's not like, it's too early for that, but maybe if it's top 40s, maybe that's okay. All right, so like, this was an okay brainstorm, right? We're like going through all of the obvious things, and hamming it up a little bit to show what happens when we're a little prickly at the wrong moment, right? Like it's okay to have preferences and have needs, and share that with your team, but you see how it's like, first of all, it's hard to ideate and be creative on camera, which, you guys are doing great, (man laughs) but when you have this No But mentality, like it's not super interesting, right? Like somebody says something, I respond to it, and we're like okay, so let's try a little bit of improv now. And this is based on, this is straight from improv theater, where you never say no to something, it's just like yes and something, so the point here is, we're going to plan the ultimate party, but we don't have to make any decisions now, we really just want to come up with ideas and lots of ideas. All right, and so for this one, I will give you back your Post-It notes, so we can have our ideas, and then we just want to document our ideas, and I know we're running out of space a little bit, so why don't we just, you know, we'll just like mix our ideas over this stuff if we don't have an eraser, that's okay, but we just wanna capture ideas, and don't worry about, you know, making sure that anything is perfect or good, we're just going for volume, right? Quantity, not quality, all right. So, I liked cake, so let's just start with cake, I mean, that was a good idea from the previous section. Have Matt draw your portrait. Ooh, yeah. (group giggles) Rent a huge house. Yeah. So maybe with the rent a house thing, we can rent one of those bouncy castles, and then Matt can draw our portraits, but they're like, they're more like caricatures, all right, so we're all like more like cartoon characters or clowns, 'cause like I mean, I know what I look like, so I'd want more of an exaggerated version of me. (scribbling on Post-Its) Yes, and we can hire an animator to actually make them gifts or something Oh, that would be awesome if like there'd be a really cool party gift if like everybody at the party turns into a cartoon character, and that's like a party gift, also with the cake, can we have like somebody dress up like, I don't know, as like a blowfish or something, and they can pop out of the cake. Yes, and we could have cupcakes that are made of the guests' portraits. Oh, that'd be awesome. Like a bust, okay, okay. What if they were like 3-D printed, so like, so there's our portraits, right, but then they're rendered in 3-D and then they're 3-D printed in like, I guess icing or cream or something, so we see like a 3-D version of ourselves on top of the cupcake. Yes, and we can also use the laser cutter for wood to actually give you a takeaway present, like for you portrait. Oh, that's awesome, yeah. All right, so you see how this is way more generative than the previous example, just because we don't really care right now about getting it right. We're just going for quantity of ideas and like, some of these are like totally preposterous ideas, but it doesn't matter, right, the here idea is to now be pliant again, and just open up your minds and be able to go down different creative paths and avenues, and then we'll make sense of it later. We'll choose something that is most suitable later. So does that make sense as an aside? As like figuring out, you know, we want to focus on this Yes And thinking and doing rather than the No But at this point of the process.

This course was exactly what I was looking for! As a psychotherapist looking to enter the world of design and facilitation, this primer for design thinking set up the facilitation workshop perfectly. Dynamic workshop. Grateful to Lee-Sean for sharing his process.
