Class Introduction

Welcome to Creative Live. I'm Amy Wynne and I'm thrilled to be offering my Drawing Foundations series here in the Creative Live studios. In this fourth class called Drawing Basics Tonality and Shadows, we're gonna be learning some key ways to bring your drawings to the next level, from linear drawing to something with luminous dramatic effects. So let's take a look at what we're gonna be covering in this course. Tonal gradations, hatching and crosshatching, how to create scenarios that will create drama both with the lightest lights and the darkest darks and some simple ways in, some varieties of line making and some really exciting ways to get your drawings to sing in terms of dramatic lighting qualities. We're also gonna talk about creating a dramatic value range, how we can create polarities of light and dark that really make your drawings sing And we're also gonna be working with core and cast shadows, in terms of how shadows rake across the ground plane and really how to get those...

to reinforce that nature of the objects that you're drawing. One of the things that we're gonna work with is a five-part tonal gradient. Why would we want to do this, why would we want to learn about tonality? Well, you know, once you've spent all that time working on getting your linear drawings of basic shapes going, then to start to really add in lights and darks and really know ways to put marks down that not only create light and dark values but also create structure to the object. So there's a really mindful way that we can make marks and experiment with mark-making to make it more exciting. I love this quote, I think this really pertains to what we're gonna be doing, even though it's from the 16th century. Francis Bacon said, "In order for the light to shine "so brightly, the darkness must be present." So that's one of the things we're really gonna work with is this idea of lighting and the challenges of setting up beautiful lighting. What are our option? There's so many options, and in looking at how to position a lamp, how to light objects from one side, the choices are endless, but I'm gonna take you through some ways that you'll make some better decisions about that. So the thing that we're gonna do first is we're gonna travel to the kitchen at Creative Live, it's got beautiful northern light, and we're gonna be able to take a look at how we might make choices around lighting options, and some basic steps towards tonality.

The package of four drawing basics courses by Amy Wynne are very well organized. Each section builds on the other. By the end, she has given us a technical understanding of how to use marks and tonality and shadows and highlights to develop a beautiful drawing of anything. The illustrations of important points were very helpful. HIGHLY recommend.

Amy teaches a straight-forward approach to tonal rendering and mark-making that builds on her previous courses on building basic line drawings. She makes beautiful and believable tonal shading attainable. Loved it!
