Design Tips: Color
I want to get into color a little bit s o color in canada as we know is done with the color wheel I'll show you what that looks like let me switch back to my personal account here. Here we'll go into the color training module. Okay, here we know that blue and yellow are complimentary. They they are on opposite sides, so in order to change the color of an object or a piece of type or an icon or an spg that you've uploaded, you're going to click on it. And in thie tool tip menu, you're going to see the color that it is in a little circle when you click on that color it's going to give you some suggestions? Uh, some of them all right, let's give you a lot of suggestions, actually, but we're going to go down here and we're going to I don't like any of these, so I'm gonna pick a new one and we get the color wheel in the color bar color wheel is hugh and saturation I'm sorry the color wheel is the hue of it so we let's go like with this kind of like light blue here and then you khun dark in ...
that color, doing a shade of it here a good piece of vocabulary, a tint is a lighter version of a color and a shade is a darker version of a color um it's just good to know when talking about things can I see a tent of this yellow if you're like in the in the paint store and they're like what do you want a different you know that you know, I just want to be a little bit later it's all onda shade is a darker so as I'm doing this notice that it's giving me a color code here if you guys want to record that, use that in other places in your brand out there on your web sites or anything else you could choose the color here on then get its hex color code right there so I've changed it to a blue and as we know blue and yellow are complementary there's another oh here we just learned uh that's down there another type of color relationship is monochromatic this is a very, very, uh, useful color choice mechanism that you can employ with canada on to do that you're going to use this slider so here I'm going to take this guy and I'm gonna pick a color I'll just pick this this blue over here I'm going to do it for every single one of these droplets so that they're all the same color now let's say I have the droplets and they're like a little bit overlapped like this I can't really see them, so in order to be able to keep same color of the same feeling of the color that I chose but still be able to see them differently in canada, we have the slider to adjust the tone of the color. To get to the slider, you're going to click on the object, go into your color circle, gonna go all the way to the bottom, click on the plus and when you do that it's going to bring up what the existing color is it just it knows that already is going to be okay, we're going to start here, and then from there you can move your slider, and here you can see change in the circle if sometimes if the color wheel is too big and you can't see what color your picking, just just shoot your eyes up over here, you can always sort of check and see what's going on in the little, uh, little circle there, so make this one really dark, and I'm going to do the same thing and just make that one a little dark. So here I have three various tones. Uh, they're both shades of that original blue um so in addition to monochromatic, an addition to color complementary colors we have, we're called analogous colors. A great example is what we saw with the fathom brand, where we had three different blues. Some of them have a little more green in them, so we had a little more gray, but they were all sort of in the same fam. Analogous colors are colors that are that are near each other on the color wheel. So a good example are, are these the red, orange and yellow? Another great example is green, blue and yellow, because they're all sort of in this family of colors over here. So we're going to change this let's see here, uh, great. I'm glad this is here. If you notice, I went to click on this, and I want to go click on one single piece in order to changes color, but it's not letting me. This is actually one graphic, and the graphic is an spg er, and it has three colors associated with it. So someone has saved out this graphic brought in canada and it's all one thing so there's no grouping or on grouping, but I can actually change the color of every single. Designated color in this graphic, which is really cool and designers out there you're going to love that because you can upload something with seven different colors and you can actually change every single one of those colors in the spg and everywhere that it appears it will change in that graphic so here I have three colors in the graphic I'm going to change this one too blew this one to yellow and you know what? I don't like that yellow let me find a better one yeah, these are nice who that's bright simply them and this one a screen these colors our although they look a little bit different they're they're they're a little bit farther spread out on this wheel so let's actually fix that let's make them a little bit more a little bit closer to each other on the wheel so that there are three different colors hopes that's the single there we go three different colors um but they're close to each other so they are analogous um so we just talked about this little bit earlier a tent is something that's lighter than thin its original color in the shade is darker s o here if I wanted to change the tint of this the first thing that I would do is match the background so that let me select at all so it's completely illegible upset just deleted it all right, so carry that at all so I can change the color to make it lighter by going scrolling down to the plus sign and just pulling this back so that it's legible it's actually the same call what's it's close to the same colors the background and we just lightened it up and conversely a shade is a darkening of a color, so I'll pick color here. Which one did they use for that background selected hall there we go so can can barely read it well, little bits a tent right now, but I can make it a shade by going down to the plus side and dark ing it. Oh, and here you can see the live preview what's happening sometimes that we all kind of gets in the way sometimes it doesn't uh there we go. All right, so there's a shade just because I've kind of played with this before, so you have to highlight in order to click on the plus and get that color to come up so threatened to use the tire. You know why you have to highlight it? Because you can actually make different letters, different colors uh, so I can select this a and now I'm crying on the inside like never do this as a designer, but just to show you how it how it happens that's. Why, so you're right. You notice that when I clicked on this at first see my cursor is blinking. It's actually doesn't have anything selected, so if I were to go to change the color, nothing would happen. So because you can change the color, different letter forms you, they ask you selected first. That's, that's, that's, a good point.
