Lightroom Efficiency: Library Module, Keywording

if you haven't calibrated your monitor if you haven't calibrated your camera so that what you're saying if the shoot is what you're seeing inside of light room you're not going to be accurate with your color so all the work that you do on your monitor is not going to be very valuable to you because when people see it they may be seeing it in a completely different way um so you need to calibrate the monitor and the work that you do inside of light room will be far less difficult if you shoot it correctly and if you have your camera calibrated with light room so that when you're shooting you know what you're going to see when you hit light room so just remember those things and those of you out there on the internet those of you who have purchased the course go back and review the end of day one kind of in connection with today because that's important for uh unimportant beginning to the process of working in light room is to make sure that all that's calibrated so that in the end you h...

ave accurate color at your camera so you know what you're getting in life so that's important um today I want to talk to you this morning all about light room so we're just going to go in the light room we're going to talk about tips and tricks and efficiencies and things like that that we have in light room so the first thing that we want to talk about is just how do you get the most out of light room what one of the one of the best ways to work within light room and and there's there's several things that air there's light room is bill in modules so if we go to light room here and we look at the modules you'll see that they've kind of laid out the way that a photo workflow goes if you look at the top there's a library and in the library you do your selections and you work in there and then you go to the developed and one of the things that I find most people do in ways is there time doing is that they go back and forth between the two and what that does is it costs you time because you're switching modes and you and you're not really paying attention to any one thing at one time and those of you have seen you speak before or watch the last workshop that I gave here you know that I say that you need to do one thing at a time you need toe focus on your current task and then moved to the next task rather than going back and forth between them and so stay in the library mode until you've exhausted all the things that you should be doing in the library about all the selection process all the organization process and then once you've done that then you have permission to go over to the develop module so some of the things that we need to do inside of the inside of the library module are the process of selection and I'm going I'm going to just quickly review a couple rules that I've told you in previous workshops but I want to review them because they're worth reviewing and that is that when we're picking our images we always do it by positive selection so we don't reject things we positively select them the other thing that we do is when we're reviewing images so if I'm going to review a set of images say from ah wedding when I do that I want to review them by highlighting a set a set of images that are similar and I want to go into the survey mode and review them together so instead of looking at things one at a time like this where I'm going back and forth trying to decide which images is the best I need to look at them in comparison to each other so that I can quickly see the best image grab it pick it and move on so that's another important rule always do things by comparative review and then of course when you're doing that comparison you need to follow your gut you need you need to do things by instinct to many people spend too much time doubting themselves when they're when they're choosing their image is there always doubting whether or not they chose the right one and so that's why you get that whole angst ridden this one or that one this one or that one I'm not sure and you go back and forth and you and you labor over and you're not sure you you've got to just be willing to trust yourself choose an image move on because in the end the difference between a and b a and b the client will never know the difference and we talked about that the other day we talked about what does the client really care about does the client care if your two hundred s o r four hundred eyes so no client doesn't care like I won't see the difference and so the client also won't see the difference between the image you chose and the image you didn't choose so it doesn't matter just choose the one you think is great and move on don't don't be angst ridden over it and and worry about it because you're just wasting your time so those of some things that when you're working inside of light room in the selection process you want to make sure that you're really paying attention to those now that being said one of the tools that I use and the presets when you buy the course the settings for my shuttle pro too are on that and so I use a shuttle pro too and I also use the the buttons on my walk and tablet to try and speed along the process of postproduction so that I'm not looking at hunting for various keystrokes kind so that's another thing that can help speed you along is having keystrokes that air replicated on some kind of and you don't need to use a shuttle pro too there's there's all sorts of things out there there's game controllers whatever just something that you can program the keystrokes so that you're not searching for keystrokes and you're going to notice that pretty intensely when we're in the developed module because there's a whole bunch of keystrokes that air like shift option command see you know I have to take both hands off of whatever I'm doing to try and create that keystroke and so it's faster just to leave your hands on a mouse and have another man on a hand on a keeper or keyboard replicator so that you can get those things is done so having something like that is very important to the process I never go anywhere without my shuttle pro too okay so if I have to add a images I really want this with me because it's just invaluable in the process so that's an important thing teo to think about as well on dh there there some for forty bucks and some for one hundred bucks and they go all of its place all right so let's go into the library module and let's talk about a couple items that are very useful so again today we're not going to talk about light room in in the whole process of light room because we obviously don't have time to do that we've already done that on a three day course here what we want to talk about it some really important things that I use inside of light room that help to make my process more simple um so one of those things is this if you hit the tiki in light room you get a thing down here called the toolbar and inside of this toolbar there's a little spray can I already told you that I send stuff off to shoot not at it to do so that they do the heavy lifting so I send images to them and they just neutralised the color get the color balance right make sure the exposure's correct and send me back images that so I don't have to be tweaking with the basic settings inside of my develop module but when I get them back they're just kind of normalized they're just they just look like an accurate photograph and then it's my opportunity to go in and style eyes those I could pay them too stylized it for me but I liketo have my own signature look to it and so one of the things that I'll do when images come back is I'll go in and I'll just take a set of images like this that air normalized and I'll say okay I want in some of these are already stylized because they're finished but I'll take images that are normalized let's just go find some images that are just standard lee done like this so here's a set of images that have they're just they're exactly what was sent back to me on dh what I'll do is I'll take the paintbrush or the spray brush pull it the spray bush and if you look down next to the spray brush once you pick it up you can see that there are things that you can paint you can paint keywords which is very very helpful so how many of you guys keyword your your work okay kee wording is absolutely essential and I would expect you to but key wording for everybody is essential because if you want to find your images later in your portfolio whether it's for trying to stock imagery or whether it's you want to do a book for a vendor or whether you just want to do like a portfolio change and you want to look for images of a bride on a cliff or something like that when you do that you need to search for him by keywords otherwise you're just hunting for things actually you're you're gathering things there's a difference between hunting and gathering okay so there's hunters and there's gathers gathers so like shopping so my wife is a gatherer and she will go in and just wander around the store and find things you know she'll find this skirt and that and she comes up with some amazing like combinations because she just kind of wanders through a store and looks through racks to see what's there and something's on sale and whatever so she's able to come up with great outfits but it takes like a year of gathering to get the right things in the right combination she has certain things she's gathered and then she doesn't have something to go with it yet and sits in the closet until she finds something else to go with it and so that's the gathering mentality and that's great for like clothes shopping but it's not great for business and so you can't be running around gathering things when you're a photographer you got to be a hunter hunters go in shopping and they say I need pants they go in and grab a pair of pants and then they go to the and they get it and they leave that's a hunter right and so I like to think of working in photography especially selection process and working on your images is a hunter mentality not a gathering mentality okay so when I go in to look for images in my portfolio I want to hunt for them and I want to gather I don't have to scroll through and look through a thousand images to find a couple that I want so instead what I'll do is I'll go um to my set of images that I'm interested in so for instance if I wanted to go to um here these are some of the images that the dmg contest people were able to download and they're lowing go and if I want to look for images from my hometown I just simply type in st john's and then you'll see all the st john's images will appear so these are all from st john's well except for this one I don't know what that means showing up the st john's hold on let's see it must be no some reason are he words they're not completely working well that's bad but let me let me reset this let's go in we're going to search for uh keywords contains st john's there we go okay now it's working just had to reset it so now you can see that I've got four images is from st john's it's very easy for me to find those because I've keyword in them so that's the hunting mentality so that's one thing that you can spray onto your imagery is key words so that you can find things really quickly inside of your portfolio so now let's go back to that little set of images that we're looking at here but the other thing that you khun sprays you can spray settings so remember we talked about presets and we'll talk more about creating those presets in a minute but inside of your painter tool here you can go down and creek click on settings once you've got settings now we can choose from any of our settings here so I can go to say my black and whites or I can go wherever but I'm going to go to like you can go to um let's go to the film pack and let's just say we want toe add a documentary black and white look to all of the images that were you know any enemy image we want to do a documentary black and white when I say documentary black and white it's it's it's not a super contrast in black and white it's like that standard you know classic documentary black and life so now I can just spray this on to any of the images I just click and spray and now all of those images are going to be black and white but the underlying information that was changed by shoot not edit the adjustments that they did to it to neutralize it and to make it you know just a basic image correctly exposed correctly color balanced doesn't change I've just sprayed the extra look to it onto the image so you can have either an assistant do all of your basic color correction or you could have shoot not at it do your basic color corruption correction and when you get him back you can just simply spray the effects that you want onto those things and add the style so james if you had someone else neutralize all the colors and make sure that all of your images were were correctly exposed and correctly color balanced then you could go in and just say okay my signature vignette look you could choose that as a preset and then just spray it on everything and you would have the signature of and yet on everything just by spring it you wouldn't have to go in and individually do it you just spray that been yet in and if I wanted to I could add to this let's let's just say I wanted to add a vignette I could come back to the vignettes and look for you know I'm going to do ah signature vignette james's signature of and yet would be kind of a post crop heavy edge burn and so now I can just spray all those and now I've got that signature vignette on all of emma's well so there's there's something that he said for the efficiency of using pre sets with the spray tool and just to spray it all in another thing you can do if you if you run a studio and you have a lot of staff another thing you can do is as the I think the photographer should always be involved in the process of selecting because they know what they shot and they know what they experienced during the event and so if they're not involved in that process I think something gets lost in translation and so you're not sure that you get the right image because you know when the bride was crying and what she was crying over and what was so important and what that trinket really meant to her and so you kind of have a better sense of what shouldn't shouldn't be shown and I think to the photographer has like we said we pre visualize things we talked about pre visualization yesterday you pre visualize at the camera what you want to become out of this image so if you run a studio or you have an assistant who will do the post processing for you you could go in and do your selections and then once you're done with your selections you could go in and just say okay I want to give my assist is that a hint as to what should be done to all of these but I don't want to waste a lot of time doing it so if you wanted to say I want to change all of these two black and white you could spray black and white on him so that club so your assistant would always know oh this is the black and white and if its color I keep it in color and work on it in color so you could give direction to somebody else simply by spraying certain settings on to something so this is a very valuable tool that I don't think is used enough that little spray cancan do a lot of good it can also put things into collections like you can choose a target collection so you can spray it into a collection so if you come over here and make a target collection so we come down to the bottom and collections were really helpful in finding things especially when you're crossing a hole like in the portfolio crossing a whole bunch of different events and different jobs collections are a good way of collecting things without having to actually move the images in the old days we used to make copies of images and put him into folders to try and collect him and now we do virtually that same thing so we create a collection and in that collection we'll just call it a um quick review I spoke quick run yes quick review and then once we've created that weaken right click it and set it as a target collection once we said it as a target collection we can go to any image that we want to use and there's a little circle that will appear on the image itself you can click on the circle and that adds it to the quick collection you can see now there's one image in the quick collection or I mean in the in the target collection or you could come down to the spray tool and choose toe add it to the car target collection and now I could just go through and click and spray anything so if I wanted this whole siri's to be in the target collection could just spray it like that and now all of those was all ten of those air inside the target collection so you could go through your whole portfolio just with that spray can in hand and just when you see something interesting spread if you see a group of images that are interesting spray um and just keep moving down through your portfolio and then when you've come teo you come back to the the the target collection and look at it you can say okay now I've got three hundred images that I chose what do I want to do with them and you can start removing stuff that doesn't quite fit from that collection by clicking on it and deleting that's not deleting it from the from your files it's just deleting it from this collection it's removing it from its reference and so I could say oh well this one doesn't fit that one fits this one doesn't fit and I can start hurl holding down a collection and then I can use that collection to create a book or two you know make prints for somebody or or just send them off to to bright lights so does everybody know too bright lights is the service that I use for um publishing things so I can put a collection of images from a wedding on to bright lights or from a baby shoot or from a senior portrait shoot onto to bright lights and then aiken aiken send a message through to bright lights to as many different magazines as I'd like that we may publish it or blog's that published things and so it's a way to get your information out there and get your photos out there without having to send discs and you know mail things to people just simply upload them and then you just submit them to the different magazines that you want to submit him to and then they will then digitally look at them and accept them and reject them and so there's just no there's almost no effort in the process of submitting to a magazine so it's a fantastic way to get published but the first thing that has to happen is you have to be organized enough to find the images and collect the images and that's with collections is for so any time I am working on a wedding I will always then choose my favorite images from the wedding the ones that I think will be published I'll make a collection out of those and then I'll home that collection down to about a hundred images send him up onto a line and then I'll submit him from there so if I want to publish this wedding I'm just going to go through and spray anything that I think a you know like they're always wanting to see like the decor and they want to see the location and so the grand canyon is the location they want to see the dress they want to see the you know the the groom's outfit they want to see the shoes they want to see you know like little funny things like kiss the bride you know like this this is something they wanted little details to give people ideas of how to do their wedding they'll want to see you know like the cups and the chair and they'll want to see they want to see a couple porter it's not as many portrait says is you would I think because they're not interested in showing the bride and groom they're more interested in showing the dress and the the things that were involved in the wedding so I'm just going through and clicking things that I think would be interesting and if I if there's a siri's of images that would work for like a little siri's that shows some kind of an event happening that might work too so like here this is a foot washing ceremony so I just simply spray anything that I think would be interesting and then I come back down to my collections which now all of those have been added into a target collection and now I can go through and further home that down so delete anything that I think I don't want to publish that I don't need to publish that I don't need to publish the pouring of that so once I've collected all the images that I can highlight him I can export him as high resolution srg b j pegs and then I'll pull put them in a folder and upload them to the service to bright lights and when I do that then I can go on to write lights and say we choose the magazines that would best fit that particular group of images and then they will send it out to him and then the publications will review it and actually give you a rejection or an acceptance right there online so super super simple and they add more magazines every every day so a lot of them right now they're kids and uh honeymoons and weddings and they're kind of in that genre but I think they'll get more and more and I think we'll spread out to other types of publication because it's just the most simple way to publish stuff yeah james who very quickly one is what is the revenge between a target a collection and then quickly again a quick collection if you if you right click the target collection and turn it off so there are no target collections then if I were to click on an image and add it to a if I were to push the quick collection thing here it puts it in and like a completely different collection at the very top of the catalogue says quick collection and really that's a temporary collection for you to grab him and put him into a real collection so this is this is the holdover from like old light room because this was the only thing that was available at one point was a quick collection and then you would collect those and do something with them but then they added the ability to set the target collection and so since they allowed you to make a target collection I've never used the quick collection because I just make a collection and set it as the target collection and it becomes the quick collection but it's a specific one instead of just a general quick collector so it's they operate exactly the same way it's just a quick collection was kind of the old school way of doing it you would quickly collect things and then put them into another collection this just kind of bypasses that the quick collection was the middleman it just kind of cuts him out so I don't know anybody that uses the court collection anymore because you can just make collection well right click and target it right so so that's easiest way there are other collections to obviously you could make a normal collection and then just simply drag something into it that's a way to do it or the other way to deal with quick collecting is through making a smart collection and smart collections are very very valuable so when I'm working on a smart collection I'm usually in my portfolio looking for something for either a magazine article or like if I'm writing a magazine article not not trying to publish something like in bride's weekly or I don't know something like that I'm not trying to do that if I'm trying to write an article for ah range finder or something like that and I want to make a point about certain lighting or something like that then I'll get in my head what I'm looking for and I'll create a collection called of you know lighting article for range finder right so all set up a collection and then I'll start collecting things so I know that the rating has to be greater than or equal to one it's got to be a one star above in order to make it and it's got to have a key word in it and when I keyword stuff I actually keyword if I think it's a good lighting lesson I will type in lighting so that I know that this has a lesson about lighting in it and also add a keyword in there um and that key word will have to contain ed u cation because I put education in there so that I know this is a teaching thing and then I can hit create and it will create a there's none in here because there's haven't I don't have anything that skewered specifically for this but if there were certain ones that I wanted to use for educational lighting you know whatever it would start to show up in here so that's that's what I would do there is you khun you can start with a a collection so for instance if I wanted to say let's look for let's make a a smart collection for the grand canyon so I would go on to say well it's got to be one star it's gotta have grand canyon in it and we'll remove this one and we'll start with that and hit create and now I've got a collection that's goingto have grand canyon images innit and then at that point I'll make a new collection that's just a normal collection and we'll say gc select and I will hit create and I'll make that the target collection hopes I'll make that the target collection and once it's set is a tart collection I look through my quick are my my smart collection and just start spraying things into the new one so what it does is it takes thousands of photographs and finds the right keywords pulls them into one keep s so then maybe there's two hundred images in there and then I spray in the thirty I want and then I've got my collection so I let the computer do most of the hunting for me and then I do the rest and I can further ask it to give me images from the grand canyon that were shot with a thirty five millimeter lens at f four and it will only show me images that f four on a thirty five millimeter lens from the grand canyon and then I could select from there so you could do a lot of honing and you know you can say only want things shot from you know two thousand twelve and two thousand eleven I only want that time frame so you can do a lot of of searching that way so you're not hunt no you're not you're not gathering your hunting you're finding stuff quickly so usually on import is when I do my key wording my basic key warning so you actually keyword more than once I keyword twice the first time I keyword is an import so when I first come into the import dialog box I will add keywords to the all the images that air their common to them so if they were all shot at the grand canyon I'm going to type in grand canyon and I'm gonna type in arizona and I'm gonna type in outdoor and I'm gonna type in wedding things like that and then when I get into the final edits once I've selected all the images and thrown away the bad ones then I'm going to go into the ones that I think you're great anything one start above because those are the only ones I'm ever going to show anybody on a regular basis so I'm gonna key word those images and so the rest of the images have keywords on him that will tell me they were at the grand canyon so I could find non one star images with searches but I'm never going to search him because why do I want to show a magazine something that I didn't think was even a one star and so I'm only gonna cured my one star images and I'm going to go in and spray key words so I'll click on the spray can and I'll go up to key words and I'll type in you know bride and then I'll spray all the brides and then all type in groom and spray everything that has groom on it and so in this case if I hit bride then I can just go in and spray anything that has the bride in the photograph and all of those except for this one do so I sprayed all of those and then I'll go uh there's the bride again and there's the bride and brides they're on there she is again and and and usually I have like one hundred or one hundred twenty one start images from an event and so it's pretty simple to go through one hundred twenty images really quickly especially if you go in and change the thumbnail size the pretty small like this and you tab out so you can see a lot you can spray a whole lot of stuff really fast doesn't take very long to get from the top to the bottom and then once you get to the bottom you change it to groom and spray up and then once you get to the top you put it to details and you spray down and then when you're at the bottom you turn it to moment and you go up and then you turn and then you say flowers and go down and then you say dress and go up and then you say and after you've done like fifteen individual keywords you have successfully key word of this to death but it's only fifteen keywords that you have to put in and suddenly you have a wealth of knowledge about the images because now you have the date you know the place you have all the basic stuff that came in with it and you have whether there's a bright and a groom in it whether the bright has a dress on in it you know or whether she doesn't have a dress I don't know if she would never have dress on anyway so you know I mean I guess when she's getting in her sweats or whatever she doesn't have a dress on so she wouldn't put the dress in that one you know so you'd be able to find and you could search I need a picture with address but no brides you could save dress and no bride and it would give you the dress hanging on the you know on the rack or whatever so you can just with about fifteen keywords you can find a lot of stuff and in your head you know what image you're looking for so you're just I need this and you can find it so those types of tips are very very helpful and I know that that's kind of beyond post production like that's later on in the game but what did we talk about yesterday yesterday we talked about the process of photography is win when you start reading books and watching movies and talking to friends that's one photography starts because that's inserting stuff into your head right so photography and then and then while you're shooting you're thinking about post production and then while you're doing post production you're thinking about what you meant to do here and what was important and what you know and so it all works together and so the fact that you have to think about key learning that's part the process of photography because finding images and disseminating images is part of photography we none of us would shoot images if we didn't want people to see them there's so many times I would hear in college classes I would have someone say oh well I only shoot for myself I'm not really I'm not interested in showing my work I'm not you know what are you talking about the fact that you take pictures means you want other people to see those pictures and means you want other people to respond to those images and me I mean it's it's a selfish act to take photographs because I'm out shoot if I'm on vacation and I have a camera it's because I want people at home to see my vacation right so I want them to tell me how great my images are of my vacation it's really what I'm doing I'm just looking for kudos so we're all in a sense very egotistical people we just want people to be amazed at what we saw you know if we were really humble people we just go out and experience things and we wouldn't ever care to show anybody yet right but we want to share it because we want feedback were eager for that feedback so if you want to be able to disseminate your images which is kind of the end game what you really want to do is a photographer's you want people to see your image is you've got to think about curing throughout the process so james you had a question I have been bad bad light room we're doing I have never killed the zoon of photo nice wass what are the benefits ridge eyes hurting bulky wording well the benefit of a key word is that you can find it on other people complained it so if you put it online people need to be able to find it so you're looking for your images and so are other people so if you want people to see your imagery the only way they're going to see it is that the internet confined it because they don't search people don't browse the internet they searched the internet they're hunters no one just kind of clicks on random links people search they go to google and they type in things and so if there aren't keywords and all tags and things like that leave them to your photograph so that when you type when you go on an internet search and you're looking for interesting photo tips or something like that you type in keywords those key words come from the keywords inside of your images and the titles and the descriptions that you add to your images and so if you want to be found on the internet you need to make sure that they're keywords and titles and descriptions and all tags and surrounding text that helped the internet know what the image look what isthe and so go to google today and type in grand canyon wedding and I guarantee that you will find um a couple of the you'll find probably uh an image like this one or you'll find you know that image you'll find a lot of these images because they're all key worded and they've got the surrounding text and all that kind of stuff so you'll you'll definitely find my this grand canyon wedding and other ones that I've shot you just find them they'll be there go search you'll find them and that's because I'm using keywords and all tags and descriptions and things like that to help you find them I want to find him on my portfolio but I want you to find them too because why because I'm in any egotistical photographer that wants you to see my work right yeah so do you have like a a list that you don't really deviate from for key words cause I find I gave up on keyboarding like one hundred percent and it was because sometimes I would type and fall and then other times I would type in autumn and then sometimes I would spell autumn wrong and then like it didn't it didn't work for me well I am stand the spelling thing because I'm a horrible speller horrible what I will do is I you can use the keyword list so if you go down below key wording there's a q word list and if you find that you misspell things you can search through here and find the misspellings and change them and it will change all those keywords will say okay well should anytime she's misspelled this we're goingto so you can alter the key words here in the keyword list that's what it's for no one expects you to go through here in check mark all of things it let that would be ridiculous to like click on an image and then come here and find all the things that I mean look at this what's in here there's bunny there's brother there's brophy chat I mean you'd just be spending your whole life key wording if you tried to do that but if you were to look for misspelling so search misspelling so I could search grand there's all the grand canyon and there's grandpa which is not a misspelling of grand canyon but if I had on the spelling of grand canyon I could then change it so you can right click it and you can play with this and put that you can change the key words and you khun you can look for every everything that has that key word on it so you khun manipulate your key wording soak you earning is very very useful tool I'm going to move past key wording because we want to we want to keep moving but that's one of the things in the library module it's super super critical couple questions from the internet can you just confirm about key wording and and the internet and how it goes together so uh mannequin from california do the keywords stay with each image out side of light room and from f tin do the keywords get picked up by google for ceo okay so two different issues light room when it exports the images depending on your preferences and usually the preference globally is set to export all the key words you can tell it to not be an exportable key word so you can have certain keywords like say you could have a key word called ugly like if you wanted to find ugly people or something but you don't want that export you can then tell in the keyword list you can right click it and say this is a non exportable keyword you can tell it not to be an exportable keyword so but as long as you're not doing stuff like that all of your key words will export and so when you exported j pay all the key words get shoved inside that jay pick which means that anything that concerts the information in a jpeg can find it and if you upload it to your blogger or tow wherever if you're if if you have the right plug ins or if you have the right service then like for instance life looks when I uploaded j peg live books it steals the key words it can live bookscan read the j peg find the key words and it builds html around that that photo with the keywords in it and the description and the title so that so that when when google is out there looking for images the reason they come up from a flash website is because there's html page devoted on ly to that photograph that hat it's like a blogger it's like a block page devoted toe one photograph has keywords and titles and descriptions about the photograph so when google sees that there is a grand canyon wedding it sees all this information about in phone there it is plus if I upload it toe wordpress wordpress will take that information and put it into its all tags and its descriptions and stuff like that so there's a lot of different opportunities for that information that's in but the information has to be in the j peg in order for the your web programs to then use it to have the advantage of the now whether or not google is looking in the j peg for that the the the information and no one really knows what google does that secret I don't know if they look in the j peg or not I doubt they do because I think they expect you to do a little extra work around it but but but certainly your web programs could do that for you and then appropriately places for you so it's very important for asio but not necessarily because google's looking at the keywords in it it's because your programs air then putting it around it so that google can use it and if you if you always trust a really great website maker they will always be adept and up on whatever google's doing at the moment and they'll use that information to the best of their ability just have the key words you've got out of the key words if you don't do keywords you're missing the boat very cool thank you for explaining that so we have dozens and dozens of questions I don't know if let's do one more question and then we'll move on okay uh kristen had asked from vermont how do you feel about keyword hierarchy okay so the concept of key work hierarchy is if you put in say like there's a hierarchy to like wedding and then below wedding in inside a wedding there's a lot of different things like there's say a hindu wedding in a catholic wedding in a mormon wedding in a jewish wedding in a and then inside of that in the jewish wedding then there's who pose and then inside of hooper's there's you know uh you know a flower hoop on and there's a you know a teal hoop on uh you know there's also so so then if you type in till hoop it puts in all the other ones because it knows okay well if you're putting this it must be that and so that's an efficient way to get key words into something so I have no I think hierarchies of keywords are excellent because they give you an efficient way to type in one and it adds all the others so if you're if you're into that great I just spray the the key word that's all I do so I don't I don't really worry about creating those hierarchies because I'm I'm just spraying him in but I think they're an efficient way to work okay so let's move on past keywords um let's go into the o I do want to mention this aboutthe library module and it's different than the develop I have to go to the develop module first to talk about this so I'm just going to go to an image I told you that I was going to show you images of st john's this is my this is my hometown saint john's this is outside there's the town can you see it right there that's it so there's a hometown um I I have very fond memories growing up here so I'm just this kind of emptiness is appealing to me I guess but and so when we go to the develop module and we work on an image I'm gonna update this to two thousand twelve uh like before when we work on this image so let's say we do a little clarity on it and we do the bring the blacks down just a little bit so that we get those telephone poles to pop out and we warm it up quite a bit so actually let's cool it down cause it's actually cold day so it's cool um so whatever we end up doing to this image um these sliders aaron exact positions so this is an exact thing that I'm doing I'm putting it at minus twenty minus thirty five so I'm putting in a specific place so these air exact adjustments they go right to a specific place so if I were to highlight several images so let's say I wanted to do um let me reset this one again if I wanted to do this one and this one so I'm doing two different images at the sing time and I auto sync them and we'll talk about that in a minute if I brighten this up or darken it so let's say bring it down so I can see those clouds and add a little contrast and I add some clarity to the image then if I go to the other image hear the same things have happened to it so my exposure has gone down the blacks have come down um I forgot to upgrade that one but the exposure has gone down the blacks have come down so as I increased clarity here if I goto say thirty six clarity on this one and come back over to this one notice that the clarity has moved to thirty six I missed how you picked both at the same time okay so if I click on one and I adjusted it will on ly a just one but if I shift click or command click to another one so I have two images selected and I have auto sync on which you can turn on and off by clicking on this toggle once it's an auto sing whatever I do here will be done to both images at the same time and so when I when I brighten it up so I brighten this one up toe like a plus plus point one then when I go to the other one that was selected it's also a plus point one so what that tells you it is that these are exact placings so if you adjust something and you synchronize it it doesn't adjust it like up five it it does it to the exact point of plus five and so if the two images are a different spot so let's just select this one and this one needs to have it we have to be down more like that so then if we select both of the images and I grabbed this image and pull it down a little bit more than when I go to this one this one just suddenly got redone down too minus eight because it everything has to go to the same position this is exact okay whereas if I were to have two different exposures on two different images so I have this exposure on this image and I have that exposure different on this image and I go into the grid and I highlight both of these images if I use the quick develop its relative to where they are so if you have images that air exposed all over the place they have different settings all over the place and you then want to work on those images because all of them are too bright or all of them are too dark or all of them need a little extra contrast all you have to do is highlight all the images and go in and add the extra brightness just click on the brightness ones at a little contrast bring down the blacks just a little bit and add a little bit more clarity but when you go to the develop module to look at the exact numbers where the sliders are you'll notice that in this one it's minus forty seven are minus point four seven and then in this one it's plus point three three because everything just went up and down relative to its own position so if this one was lower and this one was higher they all go up together like this so it's like the tide rises and all the ships rise together and down and up and down even though they may be a different levels so where this is super helpful is when you're in a remember we have somewhere out there in the internet someone out there is does a lot of event photography I can't remember the name but for you this is a very helpful thing because you can take a whole bunch of images from one event and you can go in and highlight all of those images from that event and you can just because all of them are a little too warm or all of them a little too cool but they're different they're they're just different in the way they look but you you just want all of them to be warmer all be cooler so you just highlight the whole event and decrease the warmth treat the warmth on um and add a little extra contrast and decrease the you know the blacks or whatever you want to do tow all of the images and no matter where they happened to be they'll all get adjusted together so it's fantastic for large events that you're just doing a bunch of happy snaps and stuff like that that's that's the place to do it so there is a reason to do adjusting inside of the library module there's an absolute reason to do it and that's because these air relative changes as opposed to exact changes which happened in the developed module so be aware of that because there is a reason to be in the developed module and there's a reason to be in the library module

Don't you just love it when Photographers, especially successful ones as Jared Platt, throw explanations out w/o any scientific backing to justify them? Jared's explanation of golden Setting Sun is dust and smog in the sky, when the real reason is scattering, the refraction of light by the molecules and objects in the atmosphere, not the smog and stuff much lower. He also defines latitude as a given amount, when it is actually the breadth of light individual camera sensors can record, normally about 5 or 6 stops. Made the rest of what he taught suspect at best. Glad I caught this for $25 rather than the huge first release price.

Jared is a great teacher! This course is much better than I imagined because it is not only about fotography, but also about passion. I loved it!

I was in the studio for this workshop and it was so, so much more than just about efficiency. Jared is a fantastic photographer and teacher, and makes everything so accesible. He covered Lightroom, presets, lighting equipment, software, music, artisic development, even, dare I say it, the soul of a photographer. I recommend this to anyone needing to spend a lot less time doing things you don't need to personally do, and/or anyone who needs to improve their artistry or technical skills. Do more. Waste less time. Share your work. Oh... and buy this course. :-)
