Update - Case Study - Phil's Instagram
Hey, Phil here and I wanted to create this video sort of as an update to the class. Uh Maybe you're watching this as soon as I put it on the class, maybe you're watching this sometime in the future. But I wanted to talk about how I've used will techniques in my own food photography. So food photography isn't something I'm trying to do as like a business or a passion or get paid for. But I enjoy cooking. And recently I got into sourdough bread baking and I started an Instagram account for my bread diary. So you can see it here. It's called Copan Bread. And I uh kinda just started slowly just whenever I bake a loaf of bread, I try to take a nice picture of it. I write down the notes uh from the bake kind of per for my personal self. But as you can see, I've tried to take pretty pictures of the bread. Um So I'll just scroll through some of these and talk about the techniques that I used from the class. Um And where some came out better, some didn't come out as good. Um Most of them or all...
of them. I'm, I think I'm using natural lighting. So here's the very first post that I did all natural lighting. I have a big window with right next to my dining table. And so pretty much any time of day, there's a lot of light coming through there. So you get this nice soft light. Uh This not this one I think was taken with my iphone, which doesn't look as good to me. Anyways, here's a more creative one. This is later in the day on my kitchen counter on a bread board. Uh I set up there was like a a ray of sunlight coming in through that window and shining on this one particular area. And so I I set up my bread, the book behind it, my my starter in the background and I got this more dramatic look. So super contrasty uh looking photo scroll up a couple of these look the same. What I'm trying to do is uh change the angle. So you can see that I have some from up above getting that like top down look some from the side. This really shows you that rise in the, in the crust. This one, I took a bunch of photos. So I I took a series of photos cutting it up trying to get that detail shot getting close in. And of course, coming from more of an upwards angle spearman and here is like that top down, completely top down angle. I wanted to, I'm I'm trying to get a variety of shots in these photos for my Instagram page. So it's not always looking the same. So this is literally on the floor. Now, it has the little cooling tray right there. Um But so it's not touching the ground, but it's a different backdrop. And then again, I just saw the light coming in through the door. This is a door actually with a big window in it. And so I think that looks uh pretty, pretty cool. Um And then doing a couple of these different ones showing uh the crumb and the insides of our sourdough bread man. I I would be baking. But as of today, when I've been recording this, it's been like literally 100 and 10 degrees here in Sandy Miss California. So it's just way too hot to be baking, just trying to get creative with uh you know how the setup the angle, what it looks like. A lot of this. I'm just using what other bakers on Instagram are doing as inspiration, trying to focus on the bread though. So here's, here's a kind of interesting one with some more interesting light coming in from the side. But in general, I'm using natural light coming in from a window shining uh on, on the the bread. I'm uh taking a few different variety of shots. Not all of these posts have multiple photos, but some of them do try making pizza with the dough as well. Like this one's getting a little bit more creative showing the Dutch oven, um cast iron pot, the bread in it. That one's a little bit different too. I don't know why I left this uh this little radio boom box in the background. Uh This one, that one was with my iphone. So it takes a little bit of extra effort to get out my nice mirrorless camera and I gotta transfer it to my, my, my phone and all of that here, you can see the bread with the background of you know, the table being set. Here's another another one. OK. So that's more like a series of the before and after. So you can see, just wanted to show you some of the photos that I've been taking uh recently and a lot using the tips and tricks that I learned here from this class. Thanks so much and hey, follow me and my bread journey over at uh coupon bread or just head over to my own personal uh Instagram page to follow me there. Cheers.
