Project Overview

Hi, my name is robert mahar. I am a designer and maker based in los angeles, and we're here in my studio today to tackle the ultimate party favor, we're going to be making surprise balls. I love these party favors what they basically consist of our ten to twelve treats, trinkets and sweets wrapped up in hundreds of feet of crepe paper streamer the exterior than is either simply or elaborately decorated and a finer crepe paper. And we're going to cover a couple of different ways that you can ornament them today. Now I love this surprise ball. They've got an interesting history. Well, as much as I could find any ways, they were last popularized in america in the nineteen fifties, there was a gentleman by the name of charles gregor that lived in the new orleans area. He had a company called tooty fruity, and when you have a company called tooty fruity and you make surprise balls, you've got ten year old boys sniggering all over the country. But none of those kids were laughing when you gi...

ve them one of these treats because they're pretty fantastic there's so much fun to open and they become the focal point of any festivity. So let's talk a little bit about the materials were going to be using today as I mentioned you need treats trinkets and sweets too wrapped inside of the surprise ball and we're going to cover that a little bit more in the next section you also might want a little bit of confetti to throw in you're going to need a good tacky glue I really love tacky glue it holds the crepe paper really tightly and dries quickly as a little bit of an aid you may want to bring out the either popsicle sticks or toothpicks to help you spread some of the glue you're going to want to sharp pair of scissors one of my little secrets for the interior of the surprise ball are these arcade style capsules it's a good way to start your surprise ball and again we'll talk about those more in a moment you need several rolls of standard crepe paper streamers now these air just in exp offensive streamers from the party store even go so get them at a discount or ninety nine cent store and then for the exterior of this price ball you want to use a little bit of a nicer grade crepe paper so what I have here is a selection of either crepe paper folds or rolls of crepe paper and then the final thing are some paper punches these air really optional but I'm going to show you a couple of cute and interesting techniques using these to decorate the exterior. So let's, get making.
