Instagram By The Numbers
Let's talk a little bit now about the numbers. I wanna share with you some statistics about Instagram, these are numbers about the platform itself. It really is just a way to show you how massive the platform really is, and I don't want to discourage you guys in any way, but it's really, just serves as an acknowledgement that this is a really hard work to kind of break into. Especially if you're just getting started nowadays. So Instagram has roughly 800 million monthly active users, which is a lot, the numbers, it's interesting in pulling the statistics for Instagram it's so hard to keep on top of. Every time I make this presentation I try to find more recent numbers and almost every time something shifts, it's like a dramatic, like we were at 700 million and now we're at 800 million. So it just keeps getting bigger, and bigger. So these are some of the most up to date numbers that I could find, there have been over 40 billion photos shared on Instagram. Roughly 95 million photos and ...
videos are posted per day. 4.2 billion likes are given per day. There are 300 million active daily viewers of Instagram stories. And roughly 42% of college-educated Americans are on Instagram, I think it's something like 32% of Americans in general are on Instagram. In terms of Instagram for business and I think this is really relevant and important for a lot of you guys in here, and a lot of you guys listening from home. Instagram for business, some numbers about that, over 70% of brands use Instagram this year. And it's just predicted to increase. There are something like 25 million registered business profiles. Over 80% of users on Instagram follow at least one business, I mean I feel like I wouldn't even be able to find anybody in this sphere here, at least in San Francisco, who doesn't follow a business. It's kind of natural, everybody knows somebody who runs a business who's on Instagram, who kind of falls in this category. The average number of followers for top brands is over one million, and that's like, you know these are big brands, like Nike and whoever else that is very popular worldwide. Per follower engagement on Instagram is much higher than it is on other platforms. So roughly 58 times what it is on Facebook and 120 time what it is on Twitter. Which is saying a lot I think. Seven out of 10 hashtags out there are branded, and we'll talk a little bit more about hashtags later. And more than 30% of users have purchased products via Instagram. So as a business owner, I think these are some really compelling reasons to have a business account. In terms of Instagram demographics, just to go through these really quickly, in the US roughly 59% of 18 to 29 year olds use Instagram, 33% of 30 to 49 year olds, about 38% of online women use Instagram, 28% of online men, and 80% of users live outside of the US. And this last little bit is kinda interesting too, 68% of all Instagram users are female. So it's a heavily female weighted network but just having this information, especially as a business will really help you sort of craft your approach accordingly, knowing who it is that's out there.

I thought this class was great. It was more of like a beginner's crash course into Instagram, so I would have liked more specific actionable steps as to how one could grow an audience versus an overview of what Instagram is. Yet, I would still recommend the class to people since it's a good launching pad into instagram.

For the most part, I used Instagram in the most basic way. Because I want to promote my photography, I have to get better about how I use it. I took this class because Pei is also a photographer, and I specifically sought out her opinion on the platform. For those more intermediate and advanced users, they might not get as much value from it. However, I recommend the course to others who want to build their profile and understanding of how Instagram can be beneficial to their business.

Definitely not for "growing" your audience. Class is for absolute Instagram beginnners. Worked for me, but the title is misleading. She teaches the basics of setting up your profile, etc. I was expecting to learn some tips and tricks about photography for IG, given that she is a photographer, but it was more about administrative things, captions, connecting with your audience. All good points, just not quite what I was expecting. Glad I got this on a large discount deal. Ok at that price but I'm glad I did not pay full price for this.
