Compliments and How They Can Work for You
Compliments are one of the most effective tools you have at your disposal when it comes to building good work relationships. They're free, they make people feel really good... If they're perceived as genuine and sincere. So giving great compliments is an art. I sometimes talk about the art of good etiquette, the art of a great compliment... Makes someone feel good, makes someone feel good about themselves, it helps them take pride in the work they do, it improves the relationship. Be sincere, be honest... Be really careful complimenting people on their attire, or their appearance. It can feel like a compliment... You look great, I love that shirt, it doesn't even need to be an inappropriate comment about someones attire or appearance... ip, only you have the standing to talk to someone about appearance or attire. If its a personal... If its a personal, not a professional context, someone might really appreciate it; but be careful in professional situations. And repeat; do it again... Don't assume just because you said it once, you were heard. Lets say it takes someone hearing something three times before it really registers. I kept referring to a sales presentation, that's one of the tactics when you do a sales presentation, you mention things again, and again, and again... Because that what it takes for someone to really hear it and internalize it. Make it a practice, make it something that you do... Not something you execute just one time. You truly are the champions of etiquette. I appreciate your time here today, I want to thank you... For thinking about the question of workplace civility and workplace etiquette. I do think it's one of those places where we can all invest, and there are real rewards to be reaped.
