Control the Clip Order
The second major way that we can control this story is by controlling the order of the clips. Not only do we choose what kind of clips that we put in the story, what kinds we take out, but we can also move them around in the timeline to make it seem like something happened before something else. So here in our timeline, we have him making the pizza, and then he pauses to cut the tomato. But we can also just move this tomato cutting over and rearrange our clips. And now we have him cutting the tomato and then saucing the pizza and doing all of that. And we can have him cut this tomato at any point. We get to choose that. And maybe we'll have him cut peppers right after he cuts tomatoes. So he cuts tomatoes, then he cuts peppers, and then he works on the pizza. Or maybe he already has all the ingredients for the pizza. And so if we move these cutting shots to the end, he makes the pizza and then he cuts more tomatoes. This is a huge deal because we can drastically affect the story. Somet...
imes it's just personal taste on what we, get it, personal taste. I didn't even mean to do that. Ha. Anyway, sometimes it's personal taste on what events we want to happen in what order, and sometimes it might be for a specific reason. In fact, we can even make a really interesting version of this by putting all the clips backwards. So we might start with him finishing the pizza, and then start, and then cut to him saucing it, and then cut to him putting the cheese on, then putting on sauce, which doesn't really make sense. But you could make a video where all of those things happen backwards in order to make a point. Again, this is a major aspect of freedom as a video editor.

This is a great class! Probably my favorite Creativelive class so far. I've been a fulltime photographer for 13 years now, I guess it's about time I get back into video. I love that Resolve has a free version to learn on. The pace of this class was perfect, can't wait to watch the rest of Casey's DaVinci classes.

Thanks to Casey Faris for the interesting study material. I have been looking for a creative life course for DaVinci Resolve for a long time and I am very happy that one has already been created on your platform. I look forward to the other pieces. Thanks again for the shared knowledge!

I've seen many DaVinci tutorials that seem to just make things more confusing but Casey's tutorial really took a simple step-by-step explanation to really show how powerful and yet simple it is to use Davinci. The tools Casey covered in this course gave me the confidence to edit the ton of videos I have collecting dust on my hard drive. Great job Casey and a great sense of dry corny humor...lolol highly recommended!!
