How to Create Compelling Visual Media
Hi it's michael hi it's amy and that we're on compelling visual media because you know if you're teaching a course that runs throughout the day, you might wantto have some visuals over three days you may want to have a lot of visuals and depending on what you teach that will determine how many visuals you'll use but we want to make sure that you're using visuals that are powerful, provocative and not just a list of bullet points yes, you know the quicker you know put down the clicker because shoot uh was that shoots bullets and kills presentations? Oh that's painful it's good right to expose and kills presentations, but it doesn't mean you shouldn't use it just want to make sure that your visual media is very powerful so we have some examples of media that has been presented at creative live that's done really, really well people have really responded well to and we're going to show you those uh just a few seconds we'll actually start with petrus we mentioned petro earlier I think she ...
she allowed us teo talk about one of the things that she could improve and now we're going to show you some of her slides which are fantastic and I think you'll enjoy them so let's show you the first one here her programme was called moving to happiness and here's another slide that she used another one another one that clean and simple so few words on there and they represent a feeling strong imagery yeah, strong imagery you know, often I recommend not using stock imagery because it can look, uh stock a little bit cheesy, but in her case it works very, very well. It's really, really well done. Um, composition is fantastic and and I think it works well, the way she does it and you're trying to take the time to take an emotion that supports what you're teaching and put it on a slide and she does that very, very well there's another example we're gonna give you that is animated and it's very technical and not something that most people could do, but we want to show it to you because it's another way to use visuals for teaching something that is very technical, but it allows people to see it because often we get it if we see it but it's a little bit harder if we just hear it so here's another one this is from john gringo and ah very popular instructor here, creative life and don't you go play that asset? All right? This is the mainstay of the serious photographer the digital slr camera. This has been the most popular camera for the serious photographer for about the last sixty years for two good reasons the size of the image sensor or the film that it used and the viewing system on it so these cameras have very high quality, very sharp lenses on them within the lenses is an aperture unit that is our first control for how much light comes in the camera and we can control how open or how small of the of opening we have on the aperture there's always light coming through the aperture it's a matter of how much now digital single lens reflex single lens is pretty obvious the reflex is the mirror wow that's that's amazing that animation is really solid that is really, really solid so we're not suggesting that you have to do something that complex but it is really remarkable it's at the highest end of what one might do with those kind of visuals. So we're encouraging you to get creative because as muchas through rehearsal and through content creation yours working on your presentation you want your visuals to add something mohr not just be like a backup or certainly not not be something that that are a fallback for you but but if you're going to use visuals or any other kind of media we wanted to bring yet yet another element that makes your presentation world class so I give keynotes and on some of the largest venues in the world and I have experience doing it in one time I was booked for a keynote and the and the woman is coordinating it the week before the event she sent me an e mail said where your slides I said, well, I don't know you slides she's what you slides a good keynote has slides I said where'd you get that idea from I mean that's sort of just a made up idea that you have tohave slides in a presentation to make it an educational presentation and I could do an entire keynote and keep the audience on the edge of their seat without one slide I don't need slight there may be other presentations that I do where I use slides but it's never been to you slides or not to use lights that's never been the question it's how you use visual media that matters so you may use video you may use slides you may write on a whiteboard you may use the flip chart there's lots of different ways to create visual experience for the audience but you don't need to make any assumptions about it just because someone else has done it in a particular way performer job in part is to break the rules not just to break the rules to break the rules, not to be rebellious but to find new different better ways to perform and so you've probably seen presentations were you on like that? I didn't like that I didn't like that but instead of being the critic because anybody can break something down, but can you build something better in its place and that's what you're attempting to do when you produce any kind of course that creative life so when you're creating your visuals, we're gonna look at one more example and we pulled it as an example because it's an example of uh, an instructor creating visuals that are true to brand just everything that you're looking at, whether it's your clothing and we'll talk about that later or your visuals, we want to make sure that you are still true to brand so let's look at lauren vin els presentation armor charges ten percent tax teo the rover who charges another ten percent tax to the spinner and so on and so forth, so between the wool and the roving, you've added thirty cents of value okay, so she's on the crafting channel so that she used these illustrations is perfect it's true to who she is and her brand and also speaks to the audience that would be watching her did now this remote uh, this this sends out a signal and it goes all over the place so you don't need to point the remote at the screen to make to advance the slide now it may seem obvious, but you'd be surprised because if you watch presentations you'll often see the presenter taking the remote and turning around on dh pressing the button to advance it so you khun be talking to the camera or talking something the audience into one advances slide you simply advance it if you need to use the slides to know where you are, the audience may pick that up. They read that and it's not the worst thing in the world, especially for doing a three day course, but you can have notes with you on the stage you can have them on a laptop if you're using a computer in your presentation, you can have them on sheets of paper whatever works for you as long as the whole time you're not just in your notes, but you don't need to use your slides to remember where you are because then what happens is you usually put a lot of information on them, and if you put a lot of information on the slide, then the audience doesn't necessarily necessarily need you. They could just read the slide s o s oh, you don't want to use the slides his notes and you don't need to point the remote at the screen and the screen will often be behind you and you don't want to make those slides mohr important than you are yes, because you want the audience to build a relationship with you, not the slides but that's where the primary relationship should be, so you'll also another way to use notes is to create them right into a slide presentation in the notes section. Now, if you're doing that, make sure that they're just just a few because you can't scroll through them, but the team here talk to your content producer may be able to set up another monitor for you behind the cameras so that you can easily pick up the next point on your outline and that can help you through a longer presentation. So in the keynote or power point, you can use the presenters view so the images will show up here on the screen for the audience, and then there'll be another screen where it shows you what slide your on the slide that's coming up next, and then also just a small section where the notes are, as amy said, you could only put a few notes in there, so you see what that looks like and there'll be a screen behind the cameras so you can see that now in the creative use of media, you may also want to include some video. It may not just be animation or straight up slides. You may want to use video, but the thing to always make sure is that you have the rights to the you and creative lives have the rights that makes that doable and legitimate, so you'll work with your creative producer on that. And that's it. You know, there are what's. Amazing creative life is. There are so many courses on creating visuals, it za haven for creative artist, so I'm sure if you don't feel like you're creative artist, you can watch a lot of the courses here to get yourself ready to produce the kind of visual media that will help move your story along. And your whole course is a story it's, a story that is leading to the promise. Everything we're teaching you is just another chapter in the story to becoming a remarkable, creative live instructor. This masterclass is your journey to becoming a really, truly remarkable, creative live instructor, and so we hope. Hope you take that on, and we hope you do that. Thank you, thank you very much.

This was such a pleasure to watch. Thank you, Michael and Amy for the tips - excellent for both new and seasoned instructors! I had several *huge* take-aways that will help me improve my next class. I appreciate you and the thought that went into these sessions.

This class is full of great advice from two seasoned pros... I've worked with Michael Port in the past and attended a workshop with both Michael and Amy in NY last year that was AMAZING... this CreativeLive class is perfect for people like myself that are not only speaking to groups but also teaching them in the process.
