Supporting Equipment: Cycling Gear

This is my cycling kit ok? Two bikes, two different styles of riding two different kind of zones of writing and notice how much less stuff there is ok kind of interesting I can't give you an answer as to why well I don't have to worry about avalanche train and stuff like that in the summer just have to worry about getting down some of this stuff anyway so jumping in I remain like this is my every day bike I go I typically ride amount like every single day that I'm home I try and ride between ten and forty miles per day and s o this santa cruz tall boy ltc it's a carbon bike uh it's kind of accustomed out from some some of the stuff that I like to ride with um it's a twenty four and change bike pound like so fairly light by school it's a twenty nine inch wheeled bike for the for the mountain like people uh and it is I don't have front trailer something that a lot of people are kind of coming into now schramm makes this uh trans transmission package called the shrimp xo run xo one which ...

means one chain ring up front eleven chain rings in the back dogs eleven cox in the back uh I found this kind of combination it takes away the extraneous weight of having more chain rings of front more derailer kind of all that stuff so it takes away wait from the bike but also simplifies the shifting mechanism I always hated the front trailer because you need to go to that front smaller chain ring and you click your derailer to go down and things not working and you're like trying to peddle up this hill and you end up getting off your bike so I don't feel like that anymore I just kind of shift my route derailer and bam I climb um so the other thing is chris king we talked about their factory yesterday I'm running all of their stuff because it's really nice last forever custom built wheels too and everybody asked me what my hobby is my hobby is working on my bike's so grab grab the pbr well it's not pbr's typically some kind of boutique beer and work in the garage k helmet not making I do wear a helmet uh I replaced my helmet every couple of years just because styrofoam kind of degrades and or I replace it whenever you hit my head bled out the ends you can see it take some abuse uh when I'm riding and photographing I actually never really removed my helmet I do room removed my glasses but I keep my helmet on it's just works. All of my safety equipment is done by a company called pock poc and I found that they make one of the safest best helmets out there in comparison to weight and it just fits my hands comfortable so and of course the jaegers skull stickers all over the place got to keep the brand alive right? So some glasses I carry a spare pair of lenses I have clear lenses and then the shaded lens so from out in bright sunlight typically I am writing down in the dark a lot so and I've been forgetting my lenses a lot this year, so then my glasses kind of host but glasses for me to functions, you know, in the sunlight they helping my eyes you'd be wise, but the reason I carry the clear lenses that even if it's too dark out I use that his eye protection, you know, branches and things like that hits your face, you don't have to worry about poking your eye and I've been hit in the eye with things before and that's not a pleasant experience so they function is safety and, you know typically like a standard sun blasted will delange lenses air interchangeable. I can undo the frames and papa new lens in re re close the frame so multi purpose kind of things and again putting from using the clear lenses I typically we'll just put the camera right up to my eye with the glasses on and I scratched the lenses so once the lenses get too hard to see out of, I just replace him that's the cool thing about having replaceable lenses in this scenario, okay, so riding gloves, elbow pads like guys don't ride with elbow pads, but I hammered my elbow on a downhill run a couple years ago, so that just kind of made me get elbow pads to the cool thing about the gloves and pads, all my gloves, the gloves are patted on all the knuckle points and places where you would slam your hand if you're riding a bike, so they've thought about this kind of concept. Elbow pads also patted what's cool about the these pock pants is all of the protection material is very flexible, so as your body heat penetrates the material, it gets really move mobile, and it doesn't feel like you have pads on it doesn't feel like you're being constrained in anyway, so that's kind of import to me to a lot of guys where hard edged pads with kind of a plastic barrier thing on there, but with these pads, I don't need that. As soon as my body heat starts cooking that pad inside, it doesn't even feel like I have a pad on, so and you could literally hit me in the elbow when I have these pads on with a hammer and I wouldn't feel it because I slam I need earlier this year in leavenworth and I didn't have any pain I just kind of got back on the bike and kept ride so that's kind of important these are my cross country cd shoes there twenty two years old they're not going anywhere look at him there is still in good condition, so like I said get something that I truly like I love the way they fit my foot I put some custom foot beds in him just for that extra support when I'm peddling long distances used these on my road bike and they used these on my mountain bike it doesn't matter what bike if I'm doing a cross country ride, I used issues twenty two years I got them when I was in college again bring initial air, so you know I live I live where this country western land I roll the plaid flannel the cool thing is it's not cotton is actually a synthetic, so it wicks moisture even though it has that kind of western wear for may it's it's still performance based material so you don't when you're sweating mountain biking, you don't feel like you're wearing this completely wet towel around your around your body, so that goes in my pack too headlamps there again has changed right down the dark I just strap that thing to my helmet and I can see enough to get down the trail and not worry about crashing in this last stuff seen pocket wizards there with me here kneepads same material as the gloves and the elbow pads they warm up and are flexible as as my body heats them and I don't really notice that they're even on so here my camera bag has actually made by low pro I think it's uh and all whether pro fifteen leader we can look at it when we talk about it but it's a very small compact pack it reminds me of the days of camel backs when camel backs first came out and that's what I'm comfortable riding with so I don't feel like riding with a larger pack when a mountain bike when I'm shooting mountain biking uh it doesn't make sense to me so I have this smaller more compact lighter pact that I travel with and I try and keep this pack lighter because you you definitely exert more energy when you're trying to climb up a cross country ride that's five miles or ten miles out uh as opposed to skinning up something that you're not going to be that kind of distance you know farthest out I was like I said was four miles on skiing thing but I could be twenty miles away on a mountain like you just get that much you covered that much more ground that much faster okay here's the water bottle that thing goes in that pack I just showed it here but here use a water bladder so I used an actual camelback bladder it goes in the side of the pack allows me carry more water and again in the summer the water doesn't freeze won't have to worry about that so that's what I use in the winter and I used the bladder in the summer carry less filters still have all the polarize er's on the lenses and I still carry the three stop and the three stop reverse filter with me what about liking? So I lesson load by quite a bit but does I need those puppies at sunrise and sunset three bars always have three bars never know when to is not enough and then need a little miscellaneous kind of maintenance stuff from a mountain lake pump to patch kit because typically if you're going to flat that thing then you're really screwed. So um bring the patch kit as well tire levers and again that multi tool so multi tool goes from one thing to the other pump is integrated here it's kind of cool it's got a little gauge on it so you can see what the pressure is both of my bikes or actually to bliss now so they save weight were yes emily multi tool how how big is it? Um it's always ok where does one find him? A multi tool? You can get that pretty much any kind of place. Like ari, I bike stores, everybody start carries. Probably one hundred different varieties of them. Uh, just depends on what kind of tool pieces elements you want. And this is like the bikers version of the letterman. Think about that, but yes. So, ari, I definitely has on any bike shop ski shops may or may not carrying it sounds like it would be helpful with your tripod in situation. Yes, one of them because it comes with the torques thing. So, you know, with the tripod, too that's another thing I'm not showing you guys is tripod modern politics that I didn't bring them with me. And I didn't showman here actually using the tripod to take the shots. But I do it's in the gear list. If you are svp the course, you get back your list and the tripod model name and everything is on there. It is carbon fiber and again weight conscious for may. So going from across country side of mountain biking to a downhill side of mountain biking, I change my shoes. These air made by five ten, they made climbing shoes, they also make cycling shoes, they use their stealth I think it's c six rubber now on the bottom of the shoes it's really tacky and when we look at the bike here in a second, you'll see that the petals have these like little spikes on the bottom and that the hugest kind of sticks to the pedal via this really sticky rubber so I wear those shoes when I'm on a downhill scenario from in jackson we have great downhill mountain biking, so if I'm going to shoot downhill mountain biking specifically on a day I take the issues and the other bike because the other bikers set up to descend as opposed to climate change okay, so yeah, the other bike it's my favorite bike in the whole world I love the man gente color just works for me notice the complimentary color tones going on here um this is the pedal see how it's flat and it's got some little they're actually screws that kind of stick out you put your foot on those things with those shoes it just doesn't come off sometimes I'm like I need my foot and it's it's kind of sticking to the pedal so this bike is truly set up to descend it has seven inches or travel er it's set up really high end it scott carbon wheels on it's a carbon frame so my downhill like weighs two more pounds than my cross country like um but again trying to be weight conscious the cool thing I really truly love about the spike is the handling in the feel of it I love riding it it's like my favorite bike in the whole world did you get that? I love the bike as opposed tio twenty nine inch wheels my downhill like his twenty seven and a half wheels the mountain biking markets started a twenty six for the wheels and has progressed to twenty nine I think somebody even made like a thirty six inch wheel bike recently um but the market seems to be kind of settling in on twenty seven and a half as being the best wheel. I truly think that twenty nine rides differently than the twenty seven five inch wheel but the reason they do twenty sided seven five inch wheels on bikes like this they get more travel out so the geometry can work for being a comfortable by to ride. But then with smaller wheel they get more movement out of the frame to get to travel. So that's why that twenty seven both bikes are riding to bruce well slashed tire combinations the tube truly if something the tube is for kind of catastrophic, you know the toothless tires do not flat, you don't get pinch flats you so there's this material in there called stands which if I did it like a puncture over ah thorn or something like that thiss latex material plug the hole so literally it's going to be a gash of some sort that will kind of catastrophically failed the tire and that's when you need to well you have a situation where air escapes before it read typically to bliss I pumped them up every before every ride they lose you know, five p s I ten p s I the older the tire gets it seems like the mohr the you need tio had air and at the same time you know when that tires getting older to losing air it's also losing too much tread so I'll start you know that's when I replace him one more question so whether it's on the bike or skiing you're going through aa lot of gear for certain types of situations what if you're going out with your kids chasing around after ski school or you're writing your bikes with them? What would you take differently? I would still take probably that pack if I'm going to shoot my kids um I would probably take if I'm going hiking I typically take the f stop back because it's just it's very comfortable for carrying extra weight and I can put their extra clothes in there and I can put extra food and stuff like that water for them I also do make them carry their own packs my wife and I are like you're working, too. Here s o they do. They have their own little camel backs, is kind of cool. My son has flames on his, and my daughter has flowers on her, you know, on that gets them into it. But if I am, yeah, I will take either the blue bag or the orange bag, depending on what we're doing with kind of a family unit. So hiking, doing, hiking scenarios and stuff, I kind of carry the same thing I made only take one body and one lines, depending on what I think I'm going to get that day. There's, no point in shape that you might bring and that's my life. So if I'm like camera free day, just going out for a hike with the family, no camera loud kind of my wife puts her foot down at times, um, iphones in the pocket and then just a regular backpack to carry, you know, extra layer water.
