Audio Overview Part 1

audio is can be a nightmare if you don't like approach it the right way there's so many tools and all of this seems kind of confusing because you're not used to listening to things and listening to how things were done audio like videography like photography like editing is going to depend on the person that you're speaking to what they like and what's crispin clear to them you look at all these movie productions every single one has folly that their record or you know afterwards they'll sit down record audio and just replicate that in a sound stage so it depends on one environment that you're in for us specifically we we have a couple different tools that we use to shoot audio and incorporate that into our videos I'm gonna show you guys a brief clip of shoot that we recently did using ambient noise from the shoot itself to enhance the video footage and so my recommendation before is don't do audio to start off with just skip it altogether but this piece is it's the audio is what makes...

it and you'll see that so we'll talk about this we were using a couple different well using a love and then also shotgun to catch some detail so ah my little with such a great life ahead of you you piece um the idea um well for clients first of all is that a lot of people don't have enough photos with their grand parents is and their family and what how beneficial would it be to give a grandfather of family member the ability to impart what they've learned through life life's wisdom but where you can hear their voice you can see them interacting photographs are beautiful but that kind of thing then you can listen to it and experience it when you're eighteen twenty and pass it on to your children so we think that that's something great and if you produced a piece like that maybe when you are shooting family portrait you could offer that we shot that piece together again a couple hours just once more because we're trying to get like you know the baby was falling asleep and then waking up and then crying so it was more babies and secret after that I got the grandpa he is the macy's santa claus and he's the santa claus on is it the today show where the today show on thanksgiving christmas business still ask ten years so that so we spent the day with santa like legitimately with xander he was when he showed up he showed up with presence he gave me you gave us and he gave us cities of him singing christmas carols yeah this santa okay I just say that video was incredible e I absolutely love that and people are crying eyes that post it online somewhere I just posted on my fan mail this morning I wanted to first plate here I'm cured life so you can watch it and but the thing is it I promise you it was very simple so you want to break down the gear so I can tell you what I shot I shot jewelry shot on a tripod with a vertical slider and the vertical slider we used twice and it's not something we needed to do but if you noticed that a lot of static shots by elements and it's stuff that we lined it up in the way that we would shoot photography you know we lined it up how the father the grandfather interacts with the child and we wanted to see that interaction with each other we just did everything that we do with photography and just recorded that's basically and I don't even to be honest was there even a vertical side of shot in their car so what it was I had a mono pod he had a horizontal slider was that's it munna pod horizontal slider on a tripod and the cool thing is you can just lock the mean it's just like being on a tripod you can lock the slider not use it just record and so I shot a majority of all those details shots with my one fifty mac roland's and then he was doing a bunch of such it was eighty five fifteen he had the eighty five for a bunch of this life because I took a couple over the shoulder shots and its window late grab a sitting on a couch next to the window with some reflectors so pretty simple but obviously to get through it's it's about two minutes right yes it's it's pretty visuals but obviously the audio is what makes it so um what's really interesting is we recorded him saying his words of his voice to the grandson twice with us recording like this what I did is I did a lot of shots over his shoulder so it looked like he was speaking to his son his grandson because he never actually what so I didn't have to sink the audio so what it was was just shots close up of his face of him speaking and then a lot of over the shoulder shots or shots we didn't have to actually match the audio up so keeping it simple on dh then jeff jeff did all the audio um the idea for the whole thing so not only did he record the grandfather's voice but he also got the baby cooing none of the baby cooing in the video was actually from that video we'd recorded it separately and then had over laid so we'll basically we'll speak about different microphones in two seconds but recording with with love mike's because you really clean audio so having the baby cooing literally putting it is what I'm using here putting it as close as possible to the baby itself just created that overlay where I can use it for other purposes that was a video that we mentioned ten seconds of footage is what I posted on facebook which made a lot of people mad they're like we wanted to see me man q is adorable I'm trying to find everything's black on the desk and she's like all the same stuff so there's no there's ah no one writes system no one's going to tell you that it's sound engineering is a lot like photography people have their own likes and dislikes about certain equipment so this is going to kind of be personal in every single aspect like lynch choice correct there's a right lens for the rate shot and job that you have and then there's also personal preference so well it's going to be the same thing it's upto what your clients looking for so us today when we're getting recorded were getting really crisp clear sound they're just getting our voice normally speaking if I was an environment like this using the wrong microphone I would listen to all the echo in this room I don't want to hear that especially from listening to the audio so depending on what you're trying to shoot with you may hear those things what you don't want to do is use your on camera excuse me in camera audio if you look at the five day march and we get a close up of that that is your entire audio recorder microphone and little prongs here this's your audio right here those little five little tiny holes we have at least they upgraded yes that's literally all your audio the problem with this specific audience is um is it omni directional which means it goes everywhere so if I'm trying to record you I hear you and you and you and you so everyone around me I can hear anything anybody's moving it's completely overwhelming in regards to my video I don't want to hear everything so that's not a solution at generally when I would go with before the mark three there wasn't any system to really update the audio gain on here which is what your camera it's tryingto listen actively to any ambient sounds that are going on so it will listen to your voice and then it hear anything cause yourself speaking it would essentially try toe pick up the volume itself so you hear all this fuzziness and then you start speaking in any counter accent it's almost like the political order focus on lenses but for audio um what it is good for is reference audio meaning if later on you're trying to sync up the sound so you recorded externally and then you use this to make the sound match and even if you're on location like in new york city and you're gonna hear all this ambient noise it's so difficult to try to sync up the audio that here for like taxis beep ping and cars driving past with the audio that you get out of clean microphone so if you've ever wondered why they had the clap okay when people would clap the reason why is maybe they'd have you know a little onboard mike but what they would do for the clap is when you bring in the video into premier or final call or whatever you're working with you would see a spike until you see the spike in the audio from the camera and spike in the audio from that mic and that mike and so it just sinks them up now they're plug ins you have poor allies which kind of sinks all the audio together so you can literally record somebody with one microphone a record video with the other and it will sink the audio up and it's great that's actually part of our giveaway is well we're getting a free copy of plural ice yes so if there's any reason why you were maybe doing multiple lab set up so there's multiple people being like at the same time or multiple cameras gets overwhelming and it really helps that what I want to say a preface is well we're going to talk about gear in general we're not going I don't know any of the audio gear today because tomorrow afternoon to make sure you tune in after lunch that's when we will show you at all of it plugging it in setting it up changing the audio how far you need to be which is the right tool for the right job that actually be the fourth section of the day so just so you know picture today like graduation tomorrow and basically you're out on the workforce that's time looking on this film school three day let's go over so you khun with the mark three now you can actually set all your audio levels manually which is something you know you weren't able to do before with the mark too so it's actually in the back of your camera it's him depend on what you have mine in the mark three when I have it set up I can actually modify it without having to go into a menu it's actually using some of the back toggles for me it's pressing on the little love would you call this call the toggle and then the dial but it's gonna depend on what care what you have of course so here's the coolest part about the mark too can you guys focus in on that yes there's no audio jack for you to listen to you you hear what's going on here what's going on it's not again this isn't built for audio whatsoever it wasn't built for video intentionally so they didn't even consider the fact that you can't check and see if your sound is even remotely ok so that's why the manual is really helpful if you're looking at this here you know how when you're seeing audio you see kind of jump up and down what you're aiming for is somewhere around twelve that's that's a good that's why it has a green you know uh it's actually minus twelve decibels wouldn't it doesn't really matter to you guys but that's what you're aiming for the biggest thing you're tryingto watch out for is if it peaks goes past zero you can't recover it it's so loud that it is nothing it's like a three stops overto us highlight there's nothing there anymore and while in raw maybe you could get something back think of like three steps over exposed a fake ticket's gone gone it was low and you had to bump it up the prom you run into is you get a lot of audio noise is like just like video noise a few underexposed you've got to bring up the mid tones or bring up the exposure you get noise same thing an audience okay so we're gonna talk about different options uh in regards to shooting and next frame we have audio listening in and different two different systems you have on camera audio and dual system audio on camera audio was literally just putting a microphone on your audio on your camera itself sinking it directly to your camera and that's it you're good to go you want to record and that was supposed to be the best quality audio they can get out of this there's no there's no accident recorders it's all right there in camera so literally just taking something like a shotgun mic putting it in your heart you on dh this at that point would have if you look at the bottom not this one specifically but they have phantom power which literally means that this is drawing energy from my five day march to mark five day mark three I don't need a battery for this this does come with a battery phantom power runs towards I'll show you guys later recorders the recorder's aren't here there's one two ok so these specific units we'll draw power from everything else unless using battery this's what that looks like without that giant furry sock on its very very thin okay you can't say that I'm glad I was telling my options I'm gonna discuss different microphones that you could do use for ah recording we have different mike patterns depending on what you're trying to shoot omni directional we discussed is going to be all around you and omni directional depending on what specific microphone that you're using will pick up different distances of audio so something like what you're listening to my my mic here is omni directional it's not picking up what she's saying or you're saying it's clearly just in this little tiny area here this's still omni directional but it's picking up information from very very far away but both are still on the directional depending on the microphone that you chinese uh cardio aid will only go it's basically it's like a heart shape if you look at it it's like an up side down heart shape it'll recover information up to a small degree out for one hundred eighty degrees so it'll pick up some information from around depending what you're trying to shoot that may not be a good thing because if you're operators are behind you or behind that mark you're still going to hear the behind one hundred eighty degree mark is still gonna hear them shotgun mikes which is this specific microphone here shoots just like a shot gun I'm gonna shoot directly in front of you and a small tad bit behind you so you get any vibration that you hear through here so if you're handling it and its handling noise I'll still here in this microphone it's a metal tube so anything any movement they're gonna hear is gonna clang around in there you're gonna hear it so people use things like shock mounts and we'll discuss it in a bit tio stop the vibration from handling noise so um something that I wanted to add is first of all um for anybody who's audiotex out there these air simplified diagrams they're actually more like this guy actually picks up a little time to decide on a little bit behind like okay I know it's simplified keep it simple okay theo the thing is some labs are actually cardio because when you have them here it's meant to capture but not everywhere so it's going to pen this is this is what I advised people to you what are you trying to capture sound off are you trying to capture the sound of an entire room then you would need an army mike or maybe if you just want that baby cooing maybe it's a shotgun just to pick up that sound um for labs of course that's going to be for interviews or for capturing the audio from a single person
