16. Student Shoot: Facing Each Other; Him Behind Her
Summary (Generated from Transcript)
This lesson focuses on location selection, posing, and execution in a student photoshoot where the subjects are facing each other. The instructor provides guidance on utilizing different elements of the location, such as trees, diffusers, and reflectors, to enhance the photographs. He also discusses the importance of body posture, lighting choices, and capturing the desired emotions in the images. Throughout the lesson, the students are encouraged to experiment and try different variations of the poses and settings.
Q&A:
What are some techniques to enhance portrait photoshoots?
- Eliminating distracting elements from the location and focusing on the best parts.
- Utilizing various elements like trees, diffusers, and reflectors to enhance the background and lighting.
- Creating layering and depth in photographs using leaves or other objects in the location.
Can these techniques be applied to any type of portrait photography?
Yes, these techniques can be applied to any kind of portrait photoshoot, whether it is a bride and groom, a solo portrait, or any other subject.
How can a reflector be used in a photoshoot?
The reflector can be used to bounce light onto the subject's face or to create a specific lighting effect. In situations where there is shade, the reflector can be positioned to bounce light from a nearby sunspot onto the subject's face.
How can the post-processing be enhanced in these photoshoots?
The instructor emphasizes the importance of capturing the desired emotions and expressions during the shoot. This helps in post-processing to bring out the best in the images. Additionally, the instructor suggests adjusting the aperture or using a different lens to control the blur and focus in the photos.
What are some tips for framing the subjects in the photographs?
- Angling the camera in a way that reduces distractions in the background, such as buildings or random foliage.
- Experimenting with different angles and perspectives to capture unique and artistic shots.
- Encouraging the subjects to look in different directions to avoid the obvious "cheesy" look of looking directly into the camera.

Student Shoot: Facing Each Other; Him Behind Her
uh the first part you saw how we I had two students choose a location or I chose kind of an area and then they have to they have to eliminate all the parts that were not part ofthe the gifts of the location per se on then they had to crop the photo toe on ly show the best part of that location that will not be distracting right it actually will be enhancing the photo off the subjects this techniques work for any kind of portrait photo shoot you're doing we haven't to be working with someone dresses up bride and so undresses the groom kiss you and matt but these techniques can be applied to anybody shooting portrait's this techniques work universally so we're going to continue on ana let's get started ok guys this time we're going to go ahead and stick to this part ofthe the location so take a close look and start to break it down because you're gonna be shooting and you need to have a plan so take a look at the tree look at it from a different angle see if you can use it as framing see...
if you can use it as a backdrop and put a diffuser over it to get a clean background ofthe leafs of repetitive leafs you can also stay put the bright here and use that I steps you don't have to put the bread right in front of the leafs that kill staff if you put the bride or the groom here you can create death see if you can use the leaves to create layering in the photographs to create a four grand a middle ground on a background thinking all these ways as you shoot you're going to discuss with me the mechanics of the body post that we talked about so hard core for the last two days we're going to talk about the artistry choices which is your lighting enhancements that we always going to do on the crop I'm third and you're gonna talk to me about how what kind of vision you had before you even started the post for the expression so all the emotions that come out don't be worry about being silly about what you say they're going to laugh anyway right that's right ana we are hard so this is like brutal so all of you in photo shoots in harsh weather this is like heaven for you because you're going to see how we can handle these situations uh in the last segment way had nicky photograph using the apex of the shadow so we eliminated they need off a diffuser like we used with juliana so if you do not have a diffuser even a small one do when nikki did go to the apex of the shadow and shoot away you'll have no problems again don't worry about what lance is you do have and well and since you don't have to worry about what equipment you do or don't have just get it done okay so we'll go ahead and get started on I think we had everyone shoot right we're going to start the other posters except this time I want a little more speed okay think faster get it done quicker okay I'm gonna do a lot of photo shoots system teo I'll take over a little bit more all right uh let's see just to let you guys know we have this little white thing going on yes it is a seat no they don't have to sit there because it's a sitting device there's also squares can't be used as a framing device so many things you guys can do now okay uh obviously kiss you cannot sit down because of the dress so ah voice sitting all together let's get started with valerie we'll start with you so here's what way have this area we have this area we have that area we have the staircase where can a seating and all of that way have this tree which has got nice life and you do have you do have a clear cement here which could use could be used as a reflector because that's black cement this's white cement this can reflect light I can see light reflecting on her right now there's so many things you can do think about it and uh do it quickly please okay hold on a second excuse ah cameron let me know if you want reflected the few sir okay uh but let me know if you also want a flash back flash okay kisses not hot at all she's totally like air condition can she not lift her dress like yeah fire up and then sit and then put it down uh yeah let's not have a suit okay um if you guys could come over here in front of this tree we might need to move the diff fuser out of the way way actually actually come over here yeah if you could stand just right here yeah perfect right there over more to your left okay um let's see let's do the tea pose on and then um what's it called lazy susan a little toward the building I'm going to need probably maybe an ice late everyone reach try reflected okay reflector reflective now this is important so let me stop you for a quick sec to hold the reflector in a situation like this way you cannot reflect shade right so you're actually gonna have to find the nearest sun spot which is right here and you're gonna have to bounce the light this way that makes sense yeah so we'll go here because there's gonna be more under face on dh right there okay but say you know because the light's coming from that reflector because the light's coming from that reflector in this direction you might want to have turned there yeah approach lacey solution that scores the light that's perfect now you can see how much better looks yeah can you get the veil um out of the front of matt's face perfect that yale really likes me so you know that you're popular today okay ready all right you guys actually matt will you put your your forehead into her cheekbone please oh faced her there you go um actually what there was when she started smiling looking at the grass the way trying to find the perfect little hole you don't have to feature both right you can feature one of what so this is this is t bone post on you can do it that's fine just continue you shooting through the door frame yeah I'm charging fund it's beautiful but what I want todo like this ok go ahead okay and then pulled her in close to you perfect and look at me right now but his eyes are blue painted hold on it's totally where do you change your s o on this what do you want to I'll just put it up for hundred perfect okay one two three so you need to move him up a little bit on move the gate so what you want okay right here better yeah okay and bring them up so let's learn you should've speed you see no go back and then change the aperture and charity perfect um look down please kiss you and now back up at me try breathing into braiding technique that was too bright that's right try that you want to move the gate yeah okay all right close your eyes breathing look at me in case you ask him why he's so angry and then take it now I don't think he was angry heywood's serene okay what down and look at that blade of grass on the ground smiling at you now now her teeth are showing now do it now do it very very hurry hurry hurry hurry it's to break and look up at me wasn't no you're getting the famous one you get in the frame and your background is clean on the problem is your frame here is too blurry now right so just you could have tried a different lands that doesn't gloria's much like twenty four to seven or change the aperture you know how you were saying was too right yeah so made the aperture six point three and then that would have been mourning focus makes sense yeah I was having a hard time finding the right sure of course well you're concentrating okay where his friends are friends yeah remember that thing I told you to do in the in the inside background foreground yes river with three different variations do it all three real now ok ok yeah on the same spot you don't have to the same spot you are now location master so so try to find your spot uh okay what about I was thinking of doing something gay beautiful light first so you can do it in the mid they in the mid outside you can do that epics of the shadow of way or we can diffuse it with a big diffuser so you have all these options to really great good lights haven't done the shadow one before that picks the shadows try that that try that let's do it now the shadows here so you're gonna have to shoot in this direction which means you're going to get buildings so try shooting in here so try shooting so the shadows right there let me see you know what let's do this let's worry about the post will not worry about the building right now all right okay we'll worry about you executing the post because we're so limited here we'll just forget the building so just take care of the post properly all right all right because you're gonna be in mid then you're gonna have to change the esso to track two two hundred and uh I'm a two point is we're going to one of them is gonna be really gotta focus okay and you're gonna post the whole thing according to the apex of the shadow remember yeah so you guys like to come over here remember the post in science there matt come forward for me so you guys are holding hands uh take a about step way but yeah that's also right there thanks babe um sorry one leg forward so we can get like a lot of curvature abuse for market she could even be holding the flowers in the back with that look pretty for our wedding just its flowers and now way don't have it so just continue way just picked a suffering if I could call what where please get it right that's alright alright many so I get you to let your body decide how beautiful she hates me right now like a freaking spider there was won over by the pusher lee yes or two sorry no that's all right went crawling your dress is so tight all right and so could you put you put the flowers down kind of guy does that for tonight it's kinda flowers around now looks cute yeah that expect um yeah I used to feel uncomfortable okay so yet what you showed a rain system honey some seedy looking at him yeah and matt you're looking back no wait we did the nose thing you were that way went you posted knows this yeah so if our noses turn your face this way a little bit if you noticed this way yeah it's one hears that way so you notice that your useful um try it in your pocket for me what we did somehow just yourself yeah I like that look special what do you think it's good try it out you're going to shoot it from there sorry sorry honey thank you appreciate it being patient just keep your hand on that cable would you see doesn't keep coming out yeah cool go ahead you want to push that lever out do you mind I really appreciate that you know what the thing is um well public campuses it's busy uh we're going to see the entire building about anything I'm thinking off is maybe like paralleling it with the light post sir it looks don't let that light posts come out of their heads so move them that way or that way a little bit so not be in the shop the light post I wouldn't put that I post you can put the building it's the building super doggie suman that would be so out of focus okay really focus on her yeah then focus on him you're gonna try different variations sure I emphasis on trying get your meter straight so you get the exposure right had I moved the focus point you don't worry about it just ran out of chicken place andi I would move her her head I'll get you to move your head this way there you go yeah that's so much better thank you okay sorry I'm gonna folk isn't on him first all right let's give this one a shot no god it's not very nice by the way I'm really struggling with this for buddy I'm just gonna shoot it and show you look really sure dealing with the fact that blind hear you just fine just go ahead and focus on her instead here hold this down so I'm gonna do exactly what you were doing just gonna focus down okay so that hand the hand her right hand you see it it's kind of looking a little weird so we're gonna move that hand back that way so not forward and then drop the hands and then drop it was closest to the middle of your body there you go always not so like makes such a different reaching so you have to look around for all these little things right just focus right there and I don't want the pole and I don't want the building someone croak creatively okay uh let me see you look at the reflector start laughing at me okay look at this one is for laughing out there you go they shake your head waiter I poles go ahead and look at my final white hair might go ahead and look at her fine is it ah uh okay look at her one more time finds it look at the ground find a spider okay let's take a look at what can't we came up we came up with hero quick as you can see from the from the location part we had a building in the background so the first thing I did uh you should have turned the camera toe horizontal landscape perspective bye landscape perspective you feel up more of the frame with their bodies not enough space for the building to show through it doesn't make sense you know what I had in my hand to get him from the waist up I think that's good for try it if you don't keep if you keep it this way you're you're showing more of the building right if you go this way I angled myself in a way that order bodies take up eighty percent off the top of the frame very little of that building shows true that lightbulb goes away okay now look at this real quick if you look at the last photo I took this is him looking down and they're phrases are clear of sun right this is him looking down for the spider right if you look at the picture before this one he's looking at her looking for this it right but it's funny look at the way she's nothing okay then she's you have all these options right then he thinks he's looking this way because we have opposing so this is the photo where the groom is out of focus on dh he's looking to his right shoulder whereas she's looking at him and she's in focus right so you notice that all of the distractions that where they're really not that distracting anymore had I gone vertically it would have really shown more of us that we don't want okay so that looks really nice so um even tighter right she how that's done so we have rain lightning going on everything was really really really nice this is a more difficult both because you and I want to stay away from everybody just calling all the time see what I mean we're going to try or she's behind him and they're gonna do something do something some photos that are interpretive we're going to try some traditional for us now we're going to keep trying we're going to try another one of these with somebody else okay so let's do it let's do that you can also try a photo where you're framing with us with the squares on because the background is not like fantastic we're going to make a fantastic we're putting a back flash okay and you're goingto make the listening what weaken try missy different thinks you're doing in the flesh all right guys I'm gonna do it this way instead of this way because this way everybody come this way please don't do it this way because if you look at it from the angle that I'm looking at it now you basically have nothing about foliage in the background where as if I would have done it this way I mean you get this random building with some foliage and that's distracting because that's not keeping the pattern right remember we're gonna we're going to think of just showing up something constant tono be distracting okay now she's basically going toe you don't have to have her we can have a look at the camera through the frame but that's almost like you're trying too hard it's like we have a frame put her in the middle of the frame let's have a look at the camera and a little too like the obvious choice when you're trying to be artistic so how do you change it david what's one option to get rid of that super posi feeling if you're trying to you have this situation you're in the middle of your own wedding right now and you know you don't want to do the obvious cheese he looked at the camera because you're framing her what's one option that you could do you could have him look in a different direction now exactly exactly how did walk away I just turned her face to the right and as she's walking you lock arising something that's not the camera and you just happened to be there and you just happen to capture and ridges happens to be a flash right next to her and she just looks like an angel on that's what we're gonna do

Im a freelancer and have studied photo school several years ago and also been working as an assistant for a few years. I think you always have things to learn and keep you from getting stagnant in photography, and i find creative live is a great source for that. Been taking some of Lindseys classes and watched several others from Sue Bryce as well as other classes for equipment and about shooting people in general. I always read what others have said before to avoid any classes that are not informative etc or have a teacher that leave out too much, i was drawn to what people said about Roberto walking the students through the shoots and that he had this great system you could use and take with you when you go forward. I actually never heard of Roberto before but were mainly interested cause of what he was teaching here. I have now watched almost the whole course and first of all let me say i do recommend it a lot. Its a great system to use in my opinion, and i have learned some great stuff to think about that will enhance my own photography, and its a great reference to go back to when you need it. Roberto as a teacher is relaxed, intelligent and has great humor that i can relate to. So you you are not "bored" which is also very important, he keeps it interesting. Some things that i did not like about his way of teaching was that he was a little too impatient at times when the students tried shooting themselves , he reminded me of other photographers i have worked with in past. They were also very impatient sometimes when people around them were moving to slow for the shot to get done etc. I understand during the course the students had limited time to get every shoot done. But many times i was frustrated with that Roberto almost always stepped in too early to "help" them out but instead kind of took over telling them what angle would work best or what light that should be used. It was almost as he wanted his system to show up as flawless and felt as he was scared letting the students try it out on their own because that would somehow show a flaw in his system. I would rather have had him let them try first and later he could come in and suggest the different angles and light. But now many times he would take over and also take his own picture and pointed to the strengths of that picture and why it worked. Still, you learn because he explains at the same time, and walk you through everything. I just find that you would learn even more letting the students fail first or do it right on their own. Also sometimes he would choose a location and say: You can use this wall and these props etc, then when the student would start he would suddenly limit them and instead tell them what to use and how they should crop so that the location itself would not make much difference. Otherwise though, great course. I think i would buy another course from Roberto as well if it was something i needed from it.

I have seen many of the creative live workshops, and attended many great workshops by photographers, including Jerry Ghionis. It was Jerry's wife - Meliisa Ghionis who suggested that Roberto's course on creative live should be a must see. This course was by far the best on creative live for improving your photography of couples, it is just brilliant and has improved my photography in leaps and bounds. There are many great photographers, but most do not know how to pass on their knowledge to others - Roberto is the exception I would consider this course a must see for any wedding photographer, no matter what your experience.

Love Love Love this class!! The way Roberto integrates class participation into his teaching is such an amazing teaching technique! CreativeLIVE has some amazing teachers, I have learned so much from many of them, but Roberto's "hands-on" approach put's the on-line audience in the moment. Very captivating teacher! By far I would say this is one of the, if not the best photography class I have watched!! Thank you!!
