The Role of a Score

Let's discuss quickly the role of a score we you'll notice we were brothers but we don't agree on everything we have different interests, different strengths um that we think are complimentary it's kind of unique well, we're here but we do agree kind of on our general approach two scoring and what the role of a score um establish and maintain mood and atmosphere this is similar to the mood again I mentioned we discovered in twin peaks this khun b difficult and highly nuanced but oftentimes very minimal one instrument one element um can help just set a subliminal tone subliminal mood support editorial narrative pace think of this in terms of rhythm a rhythmic concept editorial supporting the picture this moving across the screen itself that doesn't necessarily mean keeping up with every cut and every beat and every look um but it is staying true to the picture you're watching and supporting the narrative pace. So this is what's happening in this story um remaining completely aware of ch...

aracters and where they are on the story and how music can help push that alone enhance the emotional experience. This is kind of obvious we all know you know music can be incredibly powerful and speak to our emotions in a moment we'll see a film without music in with music and we like to think, you know, we played some part in enhancing the emotional experience and finally this is important to us how to completely disappear admittedly the bullet point is titled after a favorite radiohead song of ours we think the lack of a score the decision not to score where the decision to really keep things minimal can be just as important as writing a piece of music um this is kind of what we keep in mind approaching a new film we often stay flexible we try to work around this but these air sort of four tenants that that help keep us on track so I think we love to jump into noah's film um again this was such a cool contest that creative life put together in plenty of very cool films were submitted noah's was selected I think for a lot of reasons that would you describe it as an experimental film definitely yeah and although in some ways that it could appear you know complex and complicated there's no dialogue maybe no obvious narrative for story maybe there's some implied that we can all know that I put in there okay uh but you know by definition by the simplest of definitions it's a movie it's a siri's of moving images so let's this is yeah, this is the file we received first there's no audio let's watch that without any music first it's called untitled yeah all right, I think we first thought I think it's powerful you know on its own um we were excited about this one because it really is a blank slate you know without any dialogue to work around without any sound design to consider and without you know a definite story we could have gone so many different directions and we did we scratched our heads for a little bit um and we came to what we sort of think of a hybrid approach where we we tried to support well, you know what let's just play let's just play it out that we could talk about it later and then feel free to you could be generous with volume you crank it up it is a move it's a movie after all. What do you think it's really interesting? Um yeah, I mean, one of the things I was really curious about since when it's silent it's it's such a kind of creepy pieces a lot of the feedback I got on die when I thought about getting music you know they're going to either reinforce that tone or completely try and move away from it and I was there that was really curious of the feet we're going to do and it's pretty obvious which that you that you choose that shows at least the beginning toe yeah kinda reinforce that does your mood it does shift in mood a little bit but we did we embraced well we picked up on this a little a little creepiness on and try to sort of enhance that. It was fun. I think it turned out great. Thank you all. So, thank you.
