Retouch & My Menu
Okay, we're done with the Setup menu and we're gonna fly through the Retouch menu really quickly. The only item I really wanna talk about in here is the RAW processing. If you shoot a RAW photo and you would like a JPEG but you wanna tweak that JPEG, you wanna work with it a little bit, Nikon allows you to go in and set a bunch of different options on that RAW image so that you can create an in camera JPEG image. This is very helpful if you're traveling and you just need a small JPEG to email to somebody and you're shooting exclusively in RAW, or you just wanna have something right there ready and you don't have your computer to download it and work on it and so that way you can tweak your RAW image and get it set right for a JPEG image for exporting from the camera. The rest of these is what I like to call Photoshop in the camera and you can go in and tweak with your images. You never harm an image. You may make a copy of an image, an adjustment to it, but you're never going to harm a...
n image. But I think if you wanna work with your images you're much better off downloading to a computer and then working with your images there where you have a much better screen and much more, much better set of controls. And that's the Retouch menu. Finally there is My Menu and so this is where you get to go in and add all the items that you want to have in there and then you can rank them, move them around and then what you wanna do is you wanna choose My Menu so that whenever you go to the menu that's the tab that you go to. So let me do a little demo here with our camera and I'll add a few items into our menu system here. So let's go over to My Menu and then I'm gonna go into Add items and I'm gonna go to the right and then I'm gonna have our different tabs that I can go through and if I wanna go to, say, Photo shooting menu, I can look through here and think of what are things that I would normally want to go do? Let's say Image quality is something that I occasionally change and I gotta hit the OK button, see? There we go and saved. And so let's Add items, a little bit cumbersome, I don't like this, and so one of the things, remember how I said you hit the center button? Doesn't work this time. You gotta hit the OK button over here and now it's saved in there and so I can add in another item, let's go find something in a different menu. Let's go to the Custom Setting menu. Let's see if we can go into autofocus. Let's turn in focus tracking with lock-on. I'm gonna hit OK and I can move this one up and down. If this is less important I can move it down and so I'm ranking these right now. And so now I have Image size, Image quality and then A3. Now if I wanna change the rank, let's say I wanna move Image quality to the first item in there, select it, now come over here, Image quality, I'm gonna move it up to the top and hit and now I have Image quality and then Image size and A3. And you'll be able to do this, I believe, for seven items in the menu system, so you're able to save seven. So figure out what the seven most frequently used items in the menu are and then when you are done with that you wanna come back to Choose tab, all right? And on this case you wanna say My Menu and if you say My Menu what happens is that when you hit the MENU button it goes to My Menu, it doesn't go the Playback or the Shooting menu or anything else, it starts right at My Menu and so it starts with your seven that you're most likely to go to. And so if you use the My Menu that's probably where you're gonna wanna start off. And so another great way of customizing the camera. So folks, that's it. We made our way through the entire menu system. I thank you for your patience on that. We hopefully don't need to do it more than once and so let's see what sort of questions we may have. All right, well we have one question from online and this was back when we were assigning the focus button and being able to customize those. The question was can you assign focus function to more than one button, so for example the front button focus using the PV button and the back button focus using the AF-ON button. All right, well let's give that a try. So if we can get our camera set up over here, let's dive into the menu and so where do we customize our controls, folks? Who remembers that? I think we're gonna be going into our Custom setting menu, into our Controls and so what we're gonna try to do is customize the depth of field preview button, Custom control assignment, and we're gonna try to control the PV button and we're gonna look for an AF-ON option. There is it. And so we can have AF-ON right here. And so by pressing this button in the front of the camera we can focus as well as the one in the back. And if we wanna turn the one in the back off we could come down here and reprogram this to do something else. Now one of the other things that we can do is we can go in and we can kinda tweak with which area mode the back button is focusing. And so, for instance, if we wanna set this to the 25 point area, with the back button it'll do 25 point and with the front button it'll do whatever we have natively set in the camera. So you can get this camera to set up in multitudes of different focusing ways, so different buttons focus in different ways. And so I do need to really get in there to see how far you can customize because I've covered the basics on how to do it but for fine tuning it for your work, your job is not done yet.

John Greengo is the best! I purchased a Nikon D500 and this course around the same time. Because of this camera being so complex, I felt that a course would be beneficial. This course that John teaches is exactly what I needed. His knowledge of this camera as well as photography in general is exceptional. In fact, I own a couple of other courses presented by John and I also bought a couple of his books! I would highly recommend this course to anyone who wants to know the ins-and-outs of this D500! Thanks again John for a great course and your great way of explaining things with clear dialect and great visuals!

Wow! What a great class! John is a natural teacher, moving at a good pace and explaining things carefully, never assuming you already know more than you might. I just got my D500 last week and am so pleased to have gone through this entire class. I learned a LOT and took some notes to refer back to. I've also just bought a Z6 and have purchased John's class for that. Can't wait to dive in!!!

By The class. John is the gold standard for teaching. He repairs lessons to perfection. He speaks in ways students comprehend all that he presents. Never waste words. Never bores. Always demonstrates his points. I will continue to purchase his classes as they provide the best learning I have found. He is making me a much better photographer, both technically and creatively. You can't make good images if you don't know your gear. Hope he teaches lessons in Portland Oregon one day. I know Pro Photo Supply would sponsor him.
