Setting Up Radio Trigger
So the radio trigger system again on ly works with these two cameras the d five hundred thirty five and requires the use of the w r r ten w r eight ten and then it your remote flash can be out here in the field you don't need a master flash on the camera anymore in other words, all of the communication happens from this little bugger here so let me just show you how this plugs in it plugs into the ten pin connector on these two cameras so just plugged in right there it's a two piece set up I'm going to set this down the ground show the two pieces stand back up so it's a two piece set up there is the adapter piece which is the w r eight ten that's the piece that plugs into the camera okay and then there's the actual little radio remote control here this is the w r arkin and that's the transmitter so if you have the d five and the d five hundred, you have to have this little connector. Additionally, I'm guessing that in when nikon as nighttime makes new cameras that have this little micr...
o usb actually it's kind of a special connector, you'll probably just able to plug this right into the side of some of the newer cameras maybe like if there's ever a d seventy three hundred or something like that it'll probably just plug into that camera but for now we have to have this additional adapter which adds extra expense so this little set up along with this remote that costs about two hundred dollars so it's about two hundred dollars in addition to your flash and so this nikon flash is what five fifty six hundred dollars so you're into its six hundred plus two hundred it's almost a hundred bucks for this but it works really well so it's worth the money right so the first thing is we have a mammogram a camera again we have two pair the trigger with the remote okay so here's how we do it turn the camera on and I'm going to turn the flash on turn the flash to remote and they have to actually pair together so in other words when they're pairing you're going to see this little led there will light up and there's an led here that says link that will light up so let me show you how we pair them so the first thing is is we have to make sure they're on the same channel now this is a different channel that I was talking about before this is a little more confusing the little w r ten has three communication channels channel five channel ten and channel fifteen so we have to there's a little dip switch here we have to put that on the right channel so here I've got this little guy on channel five okay so the little dips which is set to channel five in which point then I need to go over here to my flash and I need to go to this area it says link mode link mode and then pairing so I'm going to go to the right says pairing and I need another hand here bear with me was it I'll put it on my tripod I think aiken you have toe you have to actually push two buttons simultaneously ok there we go and I'll flip this around they all can see it okay so I have to push this little gray button here on the front the camera is you push that and you push it here on the system and it says pairing and at which point oh come on there we go pear executes I push push their linking and then it goes from orange too green except it didn't let's try that over time so I push here a push here says pairing and now it's his pairing complete and we're late yes so it's blinking so now when I take a picture with my camera well now this has to be on the right channel and group that's the next thing I'll show you is how to set this up for the right channel in group so let's do that bring the camera around so now the crazy thing is all the remote communication and control happens inside the mini system and that's new on the new nikon cameras before it all happened from the flash body itself now though it happens from the camera so here we go menu I'm in the what's called the nikon shooting menu we're gonna go into flash control and now I say wireless flash options that's the first thing and you can see it currently says off so I'm going to go to radio a w l advanced wireless lighting I do that and now you'll see all the lights are green okay so we got the green link and here on the camera on the remote we have the green link so now they're communicating then we just go down here to the remote flash control I want to use the group flash scenario just like we described earlier group a b and c so hit ok there and now group flash options well group a b c d e and f cool now you can see we have up to six different groups that we can modify and change and work with so group a which is this sucker what mode tl or auto aperture or manual so today we're going to teach yale and then comp comp stands for compensation so maybe plus one or minus one awesome so now hit ok okay they're actually we just shut that down and now when I take a picture this will trigger the remote flash no wires even it's not even it's not even linus site in fact I'm gonna block the optical trigger with my thumb here so you can see it's gonna fire and there it went sweet I blinded the front row sorry guys you look right here power so that's triggering with the optical system on dh will practice with this a few more times today but you can see it's not initially intuitive and it even takes you I recommend practicing with this just practice with the camera totally off with everything disconnected and then going from nothing into communication mode if you practice that a number of times you get familiar with it and then you'll be able to shoot with it out in the field so that's the s p five thousand in the d five hundred

This class is an excellent primer on Nikon's Creative Lighting System. Mike does an excellent job simplifying what can seem like a complicated system. I enjoyed it and saved it to watch again as a refresher.

So, here's the deal. If you can't get to a Mike Hagan course in person this is the best next thing. I have know Mike for 6 years and he never disappoints. I took this course through Nikonians about four years ago and found this to be not only a great review but a significant update from what I l learned in the previous class. Mike is one who never rests on his laurels and as a teacher he is constantly updating and improving his work. Speed lights are so much more complex then most people understand and Mike use his knowledge to take that complexity and reduce it to a set of clear and understandable methods. So glad to see that Creative Live has included him in their line up of instructors.
