Class introduction
My name is Mike Hagen and I'm a professional photographer. I've been teaching and running photography workshops since 1998. I love photography, it's a passion of mine. I run a couple of businesses, I run Nikonians Academy and I also run my own business called Visual Adventures. I write lots of books and like I said photography is just a major, major passion of mine. So today we are here to learn about panoramas, and I wanna show you everything from start to finish. I wanna show you field techniques. I wanna show you post processing techniques in the computer. And I wanna help you dispel any myths or any trepidation that you might have. I wanna take you from gear through software and all the way through printing. Printing is a big part of photography and it's one of the more complicated sides of photography too. So I wanna show you everything you need to know whether you're a beginner photographer, or an intermediate or an advanced, I've got stuff for you today. Alright so why panoramas...
? What about panoramas appeal to me? Well I think that panoramas are a really great tool for storytelling. Panoramas really set the scene for us. They help us see the environment, the whole environment. They help us open the chapter of our photo story, and they're really immersive. You explore a panorama, when people look at panoramas they really spend a lot of time looking at them. As I look at panoramas that I've taken in the past, this is my home town Gig Harbor, Washington State. This is a great panorama, I shot this a long time ago. I just love enjoying it from left to right, looking at the boats and finding people, finding seagulls, panoramas are really immersive. So printing panoramas is also a lot of fun and today we're gonna spend a lot of time printing, and so to do that, or to show prints printing, I'm just gonna start a print, I'm gonna start a print right now, 'cause it's a printing class. And so I'm gonna go File, Print here. Later on in the class, we're gonna show all of the details around printing, but before we get there I just wanna show this off. We've been making some test prints this morning. This one here is from Iceland, and this one here is from our pre-shooting event here at Creative Live studios up in Seattle, Washington. And we'll talk a lot more about this as the day goes on. But this printer is now spooling up, getting ready to go. Here's the plan for the day. Let's go back to the show notes. The plan for the day. We're gonna be talking about field techniques, so we're gonna spend the first morning segment going through all of the gear and all of the techniques you need for creating the print in camera, or creating the panorama in camera. Our second segment is all about post processing where we'll be talking about Lightroom, Photoshop. Third segment is the Art of Printing, going to be talking about the environment that you print in, you know the room. I'm gonna be talking about calibrating your monitor, all that good stuff. And then the final segment for today is actually printing the panorama, showing you how to create these gorgeous, stunning prints out of inkjet printers. Before I get into this morning segment I just wanna tell a quick story, and it's about the power of the print. I have a lot of examples in my career of making prints for people, and people a lot of times respond very emotionally to an actual, physical print. Yesterday we were here in the studio and we were talking about this class, and I was showing the photos that we're gonna use on my computer, and people were looking at them, they were like yeah that's a pretty photo. But we were all gathered around, there was about 10 or 15 of us here in this room, and I started rolling the prints out here on the floor right in the foreground. Immediately, everyone in the studio just jumps up and gathers around the prints and were like "ooh and ahh and wow" and you could just feel the excitement in the room. And that's what a print does, a print is tangible evidence of your experience and your adventure. And prints are important, prints are emotional. So I really want you to grasp the value of printing, and that's why we're doing this class today.

Get it, get it and get it. I bought Mike's Speedlight course and this is on the list after watching it on line. The course design by Mike with the Creative Live staff is a successful blend of content and presentation. I absolutely loved how Mike took us on location for several shoots, where we could see the setup and problems that he had to resolve. This is a must have course for photographers interested in landscape work. Another powerful part of this class is Mike's willingness to demonstrate and show us what didn't work. The practical experience in his course was just like being in the field with Mike.

Mike combines two characteristics of a great teacher: he's obviously knowledgable and competent about his subject matter and he's relaxed and confident in how he presents his ideas. This class covers everything I need to know about photographing and printing panoramas. But, it is much more. It is a class that shows the essential skills involved in shooting, post-processing, and printing photographs and how to apply them to a specific application: panoramas. I learned a lot!
