Segment 3 - Programming Drums with the Logic Pro Midi Editor
For this segment under to be making drums on go go from scratch is well actually get in the drum sounds into the air six twenty four from from where you got your drum sounds from the past including single hits kicks and snares and stuff and and actual brakes themselves that might be chopped up ok so let's go to my desktop my master's folder here so I think it's a good thing you know love a lot of mixed down when it comes to dance music is is actually while you're making it and a lot of it is choosing the right sounds you know back in the day with pop music and stuff someone might put down a rough drum track you know, make a demo of a tune and then when it comes to later on they mixed mixed the tune down you know so but I think choosing a snare john for example choosing the right snitch on why the beginning is a lot better than just using any alternate drama and try making it sound better when you mix it down you know? So I'm gonna go through uh making making cem essex instruments of so...
unds and stuff so good thing to do for our what freely masters uh packs here got benny page one here um sounds in a fix so trump hits so snare jumps for instance I mean, a lot of people might be tempted just to grab a with these dumpem in year six twenty four and in choosing, but why don't we do if I get a sample pack is I go fruit, choose the ones I like the best put in a separate folder on and just create a best off off drums and straightaway I'm choosing of one's all really like wasting time going through different ones that might not be as good, you know, I'm gonna create a new foda on just call him and just call them ceo snares. So why don't we do? I'm going to go through quite that one, for instance. So I mean, it's two ways I could do this, I could color coded, uh, just copying straightaway into into my new photos. So I quite like that one first and it's gonna copy that one. Of course. What about that one? As much as quite nice as well. So I'm gonna copy that were, of course, so that's quite a last one there as well. So on and so forth. Sometimes it might be for different purposes as well as you might be just making a snare bank over snares the very top e for layers of stuff, or what have you, I'm just going randomly put a loading it always is to take time to do it properly but I mean when you do this, you should take time and you know, I think I can't like this one are down at least one pull these in here plus I can now go to a different sample, pack the blade runner for instance and go through or are we, um sounds affects trump hits after the snares on here as well it's that last one, for instance so now even though these are people with samples your your effectively making your own custom ones out of them you know ones that you really like so I mean we're going there now twenty three in there so you know, you could go from a few different sample parks choose your best nez put me one fold and then you've got your own custom set snares that you're chosen personally, so I've got this now seo snus now I'm going to make put show you how to put these into the air six twenty four so what we do choose the six twenty four down here stereo when you first open is blank I never see I'm not choosing an existing thing from here I'm going to be making my making my own instrument the way you do that here it click on edit go up to zone because I'm I didn't more than one sample load multiple samples just backup did it one more time for you guys here six twenty four could edit zone load multiple samples so I click on that takes me teo find a window so I never get to wear that was which was a desktop seo snares highlight more here shut down one by one before when I'm in a particular order nor could just quick at all pic idol picked done it's gonna ask me uh also map by reading roots key from all dfl that's if that was if I was important sounds that have key information like you know if there was certain notes would put on the correct note and on they go continuous stones his own whip obviously I want each sounds have its own case you put down one start no going to start and see one you can start where you could start on c two you could study what you want them to start to see one click ok on ban is put more down there now by default they're one on one shot so I just personally quick is going to play the whole sample a lot of times people people like that because they want to be able to just press it short it pays to help sample but for more control I prefer to have it not on one short so if I just pressed a little bit of the key or to pay just a little bit the sample so the way to do that is to turn the one show off here now at first I thought I had to go that down and click over these shops and take a long time you don't have to do that if I pressed command a toe highlight everything then if a press all tonight and click on one shot turn them off now a short while ago compress it short and it's short pretty long long so then when I'm drawing in these sounds you can you've got more control over it I paced I want to save I want to say this this instrument so instrument save as now this should all make it take it to your sample instruments folder that's a good idea to keep this nice and neat so I've already made folders for drum here it's drunk it's drum loops except etcetera if you haven't already done this, you can click down the bottom left here picking you fold up top the name of your folder you know folds unfolds I've only done this I don't need to do that so I gotta trumpets photo here within my jump it's photo I've got another folders kicks and snares hats and tops so again, if you hadn't already had this you just click your photo again khun creating folders so because these air snares going to putting kicks and snares this is what's going to save as so I'm gonna call that see no snares safe now can close this there's extra things in here that weaken change if we need to look for instance for one of these names too loud winston suckered um could you turn it down here with tune them or what have you but generally don't do any of that close this and there we go seo snares so if I waited so now that's always there so if I close this let's get rid of it now if I open up a new song I could go six twenty four click here and here we go drum hits, kicks and snares and there's my ceo snares there that only one of your chosen you know not just a group of one from a sample cd but the ones you love actually chosen I think it's a good idea to do that just so you know in your options down to you know your preference and stuff that you think sounds good stop but programs and drums there's me snares there's even a bit generally I like tio stick to four bar and that's a pass so you can tell because my sixteen biomarker so half of that is eight that is for getting up here stick that on pencil so now purpose command more mackley on pencil I don't have to right click just press that and quickly banned there is click on the corner pulled out go in and again I can press the piano roll button down here oh are compressed pay we're going to get more in debt fucked up what this on screen set for already so I've got the whole thing there but as it's just drums I really only need toe small piano rolled down the bottom I'm gonna put my snare in this deposition which is maybe it normally two in the four and again because it's not on one shot from what that sure gonna have it sure could have longer. The other option now is if I do get short window in here control the release has turned up give me a bit more the tower which gives me a more control over the sound. Another thing I like to do as well I don't think it was set up by if I pressed all tonight and the arrow keys up and down change I don't think that's set up by the foreign logically you have to go physically highlight movement, which is which is long, so if you do want to do that in your key commands, which is alternating k I believe it's called um any find always called yes, they transpose plus one event transposed minus one, so so if that didn't exist you would just go learn by key label and you pressed to key you want which is automated up and there is set and the same with the left and the right as well are compressed all tonight and just go left and one way to go to move notes while having to move the mouse right ok, so let me get another here six nothing up here choosing kicks trump hits kicks and snares means my vein kicks so again this is ah this is from a vengeance sample pack but it's one that a few years ago that I went through chose a lot my best kicks from a few different sample packs but first have my kick about this near me doesn't matter much but it's good to have some kind of order each time so his makes things easy, you know, go in and again in this window I can zoom in and out it's nothing to be aware of as well when you when you're using the the window like this depending on what window is highlighted is what you're kikyo miser activating as you can see at the moment it's kind of like a line around here so anything I do there's even in and out wise and other stuff is to do this window that fast too quick up here I'm now in the top windows if I was even out I'm going out the top window and you do that just by clicking on whatever window you want to use so kicks again I've got my pencil till they're socking just press commander my pencil comes up just a simple two step here you can't change the velocity color represents the velocity of the kick how loud it is you can change that by the velocity tool here drag up go read aloud I come down they go down to the blues and the purples and got to see separately aiken clicked on the bottom here bring this up you can't you see here velocity so mike we'll put them all the way up I might do a little it does kick here that might be a little bit quieter university that one down so if you notice that one's a bit quiet and it gives it a bit more than that, it just sounds better when you have what do you think the ghost kicks or ghosts news? Why don't you like the sound of that sneer? So I think I'm gonna go change it that was quite nice and gets a bit quiet so hot go on that can keep their might one they're only on the end of every four bodies were gonna be too so but if I want to change that at a later point across from you the notes so I just put em and I needed that note saying that you meet it parts at the top here comes from your interview notes it's a nice touch because maybe later when I might want that back or just a certain part of what one day yes but it is just end here we go by this guy it's getting hot in here so you're six twenty four stereo click up here he's all my folders that have made drum hits hats and tops let me choose ah these ones here so presser commands to draw drawing a region finical regions three things click on it somehow lie down here um so just as ah big blue I just want a simple I had to start with just on another eighth notes I think there's been a bit on that one. Not that I have to draw them all or nothing just high copy copy a little bit more if I could change the velocity slightly. So let me do this in my other windows of upper screens set for I've got the whole screen for the piano roll click the plus he's down here it's got more room to work with so I might just one very the the velocity slightly it's that just to humanize it a little bit teary eyes sometimes you want the ones in between the kick in the snare to be a bit louder and the ones that land on the kick is there to be a little bit quiet just so it's like it's like a manual side change in some ways, you know? So they have to do for the whole arc and just leave these just use these two bars here repeated another thing you could do inside the six twenty four is choose how much that velocity difference is having an effect now you do this by this lighter here there if this is all the way up, then the matter how how loud or quiet this's they're all going to be for william a zay pull this down but didn't write the way it is most extreme so let me go more extreme down here so you can hear that turned some of these done loads they say these teeth, but if I am, if I closed up more to have less effect going back to the top that's a nice way to go to control your control your dynamics tipoff show in a sec for for using that as well. Just please buy roughly right, so I'm going to get another another hats see on this in this hat bankers lots of hats in here, so we'll quick wayto get another load is too thisbut in here remember rightly that that duplicates the current track quickly so for example say survived the journey here as well I just I just boosted the top a little bit about some of the bottom while in duplicate his track. Everything's. Exactly, saying this company with the q and everything so now might want to go in here. Ah, e let's. See that one, for example, no attorneys up full. I'm gonna copy this just on the force, and you see why in a moment, right and what I'm gonna do hard, all these, copy them. I'm going to turn the velocity of these miners down, but I say halfway like, they're just gonna mute this first half done.

Picked up a lot of good information from this class. Ed is very knowledgeable, and takes us through the technique and the thought process of sound production, composition, mixing, and mastering. Towards the end of the course, at times it felt a little disjointed, as the segments switched between different tracks; but the information provided was good, once I got oriented. Would definitely recommend this course.
