Live Shoot: Through the Lens Metering Lock
Guys, we're firing up Profotos. I'm gonna talk about 'em a little bit. I'm gonna talk about 'em a little bit and I actually did... I worked with Profoto and I did a tutorial with the Fstoppers. We used a bunch of... Called Illuminating the Face. So it's some of the stuff we've done, but a lot of stuff that's in depth and crazy using every modifier you could imagine and all sorts of stuff. I've worked with Profoto gear for a really long time when I started speaking and teaching. I've done some stuff with them over the years. We need to put that on the smaller stand. I need that lower and I need the head like back to here. Over the course of the course, we are gonna use D2s, their newest speed lights. Thank you, John. We've got D2s and we also have B1s. So this is a B1 setup at the moment which I love 'cause I'll go into my client's office and I'll be like, "How many plugs are they gonna have?" Like, how many extension cords do I need to bring? I know for over the course of the day, if I...
bring two batteries per light, I'm fine. I plug in three batteries when I get there. I shoot blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom. The batteries run out, I replace those batteries, I plug the other ones in, and I'm good for an entire day at a company. Now, I have three less extension cords I have to bring with me which I really like. So I use those. I mean, that's the B1. The D2 has the plug and I actually have D1s in my studio. D2s just came out and they are just insane with the capabilities they can do. The fastest monolight in the world. So I use either the Air Remote which is that one. I've got both the Air Remote and we've also got the TTL mode for Canon which has a TTL Exposure Lock which is kind of cool. So we're gonna try that too. What that is is that I could put this on TTL, I could take my guess shot, and it's gonna lock in the lighting exactly where it is. Then, it's locked. I don't have to change a thing. I can put it back on manual and it's not gonna change at all. I'm set. All right, but let's say I shoot the TTL, I take the shot. I go, "Lighting's pretty good, but I gotta tweak something." I'm already locked. All I gotta do is adjust them right here, put it on manual and adjust them accordingly, which I really like 'cause I'm a big fine-tuning guy. That's why gray cards don't do it for me. Like I'm hands on. I gotta touch everything. Now, the other thing about the Profoto is then we could try, we could do a little BPS thing, but the thing is is that the Profoto's got, they have an LED modeling light. So it's a little bit stronger. Obviously, a speed light doesn't have a modeling light in it, so we do have help. I don't know that... We'll actually try this. Do you mind? I mean, we were on the BP. We might as well try and see how the Profoto does. With the? Yeah, I want you the same way, same exact way. We'll try the, but not yet. Give me a second, give me a second. (laughing) Just settle down because I'm in the middle. I might as well get... So if you guys go, you can see me doing this setup. This was a little video that I did for Profoto and it's on their site. You could search just for Peter Hurley Profoto and hit Videos and you could find this video. This is me outside using B1s with this whole setup and it's cool because then I could take it on location and it's just amazing. If you guys want, it was done for the DVD Illuminating the Face. So if you guys want to get the Illuminating the Face, you can get 100 bucks off using the code CREATIVELIVE in the Fstoppers store. You can go to headshotcrew.com/tutorials and see it or fstoppers.com/store I also have a tutorial with them called The Art Behind the Headshot which was the first tutorial I ever did. You can get 200 bucks off that using the promo code CREATIVELIVE, again, on headshotcrew.com/tutorials or if you use CreativeLive and you buy the set, I think the discount's even bigger. I think it's $150 off the set which is already discounted. So good deal either way. All right.

I truly enjoyed this amazing lighting class. Peter Hurley shows you how he achieves his signature look using all forms of light shaping tools from natural light, to speelites and high end strobes. Seeing first hand how the placement of the subject to the light source and your lightning set up is so important to avoiding the hazards of flat light and haze. He teaches you his unique methods and secrets on how to make eyes pop and get the best color contrast without harsh shadows. You will leave this class energized to hone your own creative vision with light and shadows using the methods taught by Peter. It was a privilege to learn from a master like Peter Hurley. Thank you Creative Live for another amazing class!

Peter Hurley is the real deal. Not only does he know and share a ton of really practical knowledge of studio lighting for headshots and fashion, but he cuts through the crap and tells it like it is. He is very encouraging and serious at the same time. He had our attention from Day 1. and never lost it. *Bonus Gold - You've got to check out his Hurely-isms. They are priceless! Aside from the new bag of industry tools to work from, Peter gave me a real, sober perspective on what it takes to be PROFESSIONAL fashion photographer! And CreativeLive provided the perfect setting as well. The whole CL staff were warm and inviting and the food was great! I highly recommend CL and P. Hurley to anyone who wants to learn from the best of the best! I can't wait to start shooting with my new skill set. Sign up for CreativeLive! Take advantage of all that they have to offer! Build a foundation, own your light, and Shebang!!! You'll be at the top of your game in no time!
