The Hoop Variation

Now you can see with this incredibly festive version of the pie on key I've used the central hoops structure and that's the first variation that I'm going to show you it's this thin wooden hoop that goes in a circular formation it's thie structure on which we build the upper portion and the lower portion to create the chandelier form so I'm going to go ahead and swing this aside and show you how to simply create that out of the wood veneer edging now wood veneer edging comes in rolls you'll find it at your hardware stores and what we're going to do today you could do this really in any with I do find because it is an incredibly thin material that the larger you make the circle a little bit more unstable it becomes so what I've been doing is creating a circle that is about thirty, thirty one inches in circumference and so to do that I am working on a cutting matt that has measuring guide on it if you don't have this, you might want to break out a yard stick or a ruler, but I'm going to ...

place it and I'm going to measure thirty one inches marking it at five inch intervals so I'm going to start it zero and I'm just going to draw a little line right across then at the five inch mark ten inch mark fifteen, twenty, twenty five and thirty which you'll see leaves you with an inch, and I'll show you why we need that it's going to be are overlapping piece, so because this is so thin and pliable, you can use a standard pair of crafting scissors to cut it, simply sniff it right across, and then at the very end, where we marked our thirty inch mark, we can overlap it with the very beginning to create our hoop. What this does is it gives us five inch interval marks all the way around, and we're going to be able to use that a cz guides when we begin hanging the structure on the strings with the straw. So not to connect this, you could do a couple of different things you could hot glue it, but honestly, I found it just is easy to staple this together, so a standard office stapler and I usually give it about three staples just to make sure it's nice and secure. Once you've overlap the two ends and stable that you've created your basic who format again, you've got the markings all the way around that is going to act as guides when we start to combine the other elements of the pie on key to complete our chandelier.

I watched a re-broadcast of this course. It was fun but what I liked best is that Robert Mahar is a good speaker. No hemming and hawing. He keeps the stream of instruction going naturally without uncomfortable pauses (he is prepared) and without falling back on ummming or "you know", or any of that. He was easy and pleasant to listen to and his techniques were shown well making this kind of project accessible to most people.
