Entry Level Drones Part 2

But I just wanted to go over quick while we do that our startup sequence similar but what romeo did um we're gonna want to do the same thing on this case I always start my gopro first yeah, because before I do anything else I start my power up my go pro because I don't want to touch this camera while the gimbal is hot which means once we power up the craft the gimbels gonna want to correct for me, right? So the only thing I will dio if I know I'm gonna be flying right away I'll go ahead and hit record because I've already got it in the record mode I want so I'll go ahead and hit record because I'm gonna edit all this stuff out anyway so I'm not touching the camera again any more cameras on now in cameras transmitters on first so the transmitter's on my sticks down because this one doesn't have a uh uh an auto on auto hover mode and it's spring in it so if the sticks up when I first started up it's going tio it's going it's going to be back me tell me hey something's wrong here so with ...

that being the case before you go further just I have seen if you don't turn your transmitter on and you turn your your multi road or on I have seen a stray signal yep hit it and it'll take off so you have no control when I was brand new to the field I had a big uh six roeder oh, yeah I didn't turn the transmitter on that I turned around I think took off and uh I still don't know where it is yikes. So that for the next thing I want to do is power up my craft the same same sequence just the two to push there we go. All right. So now what that's going to see the gimbal locks and is trying to set itself and its locking in let's go set it, go ahead and set it down over there second find it okay find its place and then I'm going to turn on my f tv receivers so I just on this is a black pearl which is um you want to talk about the diversity? Yeah savers while I turn the diversity is a technical term but all that means is that you have mohr than one system and in this case we have to and it is constantly searching between the two of them the antenna strength so it always will choose the best antenna strength and that's why you have two different kinds of antenna this is a patch antenna this is another die poll which I don't I usually have a clover leaf too so it's okay you know it's like it's a man so it's kind of a man think my di pulls bigger than yours so you will never know other than you'll see a light telling you which antenna is receiving at any given time but the video should be seamless so what we have going on now is the monitor is showing us the same basic data that we saw with romeo system I can see how many satellites I've got eight that's plenty to take off I can see a little triangle that means that's where my home point is so if I get totally lost him up in the clouds I just make the triangle bey in the center of the screen and I know I'm coming home office yeah compass for home yeah so we're gonna go ahead and do the sticks as romeo show just to see if the props are working and I let go the sticks and the crops will they'll now stop so looks like we got a good uh system and so now I'm going to just power it up. Of course I can't see where it is so I can let go of the sticks right now and it will hold its position right above me and of course I've got a good video feed here on my uh my monitor so let's go out and fly over that statue I do wanna bring up to that viewers at home are seeing the ftv in black and white it's just because of the nature of all of our routing of all of our cabling uh we're only getting a limited channel from rgb, which is red green blue more technical and most people need to know but that's why you're seeing are f b is actually in color on these monitors and with goggles everything is always in full color um so I apologize you're seeing in black and white at home uh but well, we're recording these flights so I'm gonna be editing some of this video footage tonight and I'll be sharing quick today's flights all our flights and show you tomorrow and we'll be able to see it definition so okay um uh most people guys flying and they get in here real quick um okay, so we're able to see how this f b v set up it works and hold that still for a minute, maybe she can pull us up on the camera there I'm gonna go start rotating or you're going the craft I'm just saying the same position, but as I turned, you should see that diamond appear on the screen when I'm pointing back at our home position and there it is so you see the little diamond so that's how you can always kind of orient yourself if you're flying with goggles or you're not really sure where you are and uh now I'm gonna come back towards you go ahead and bring it back so we're bringing it back in and I don't know how much you're able tto capture their of hiss uh monitor your way that's the maximum descent speed is our only always thinking so it's kind of a pig when it's coming down so okay okay, so you've got some other goggles here now there's there's a lot of different kinds of goggles out there there yeah, you just tell us a little bit about them and you know, I I really think that the, uh the experience of flying with goggles this is by far in my opinion the best way to fly it puts you literally in the cockpit and the biggest advantage and my opinion is besides being able to see exactly what the camera sees but you no longer have this orientation problem because right is always right and left is always left if I hit the stick right it's going to go right based on the direction I'm looking out of the camera so it actually makes it a lot easier to fly in my opinion there's a number of goggles they're available the low end and the most popular goggles are made by a company called fat shark and uh they're pretty functional they're very popular they have the advantage of not only having ah the antenna and the receiver built in but the battery's built in you can put these on the limitation is the resolution is not the best uh and so your image is a little bit blocky this is ah called the sina miser maid buys ice and they have just recently become big supporters of ftv they have a bundle in a number of shops now where they sell you these with the whole system but the advantage of the cinema misers and these are my personal favorites at the moment they have an o led system that's high rez and it except ah hi def signal so when I fly with thes this the image is extremely bright extremely chrisman and extremely high resolution the difference is night and day uh and and as a matter of fact some people I tell them if they have fat sharks don't put these on because you never want to fly your fat sharks again but they also come with a removable light shield which in a very very sunny day you put these on and you're completely immersed you can you can see the uh camera in any any lighting conditions the latest goggles and the ones that are extremely interesting are made by epson these are called the move ario bt two hundred's the really interesting thing about these goggles is their semi transparent and and they project the f p v er signal on a little screen that appears to be floating out in front of you last in a way but these are actually this they allow it but they bring it in stereo I tried these out last night and their their stereo projections are actually in the glass but it looks like the image is out about five or six feet in front you see it's really easy to focus on what the projection is in in the glass and see right through it. So it's just amazing experience. The other thing that I should mention is that some of us have crappy eyes and we have to have prescription lenses. These allow me to actually look through them with my prescription lenses so I don't need to mess with, uh, having a penny die after adjustments. The sina misers are built in with optical correction there's nobs by each eye and so I can dial in my glasses prescription on these goggles so I can wear them without glasses. Even with my horrible eyes and the fat sharks you have two border die after inserts to match your prescription and they worked fairly good. But again, these things are about half the price of these so it's a choice that you have to make in terms of quality, these air basically, uh the current style of goggles thes knew heads up display goggles that are semi transparent are particularly interesting for new flyers because they also come with a android system built in so I don't need an iphone or an ipad. I can actually load the application and what you saw romeo flying this morning is all on here, and I can control it here, and I can also see my craft while I'm flying, so you never lose line of sight. But you also see the camera view that if I want to make the camp, if you go away, I just tap the side of glasses. This table turns off tap it again. It turns on you like that, because again, that's a thing that freaks me out about the good of the goggles, goggles, goggles is that if I've got the goggles on, even the ones that will fit over my lenses or if I'm flying without, I have to rip him off quick and look for my craft because I may have lost the signal that tv signal goes out or whatever this way, you can always make sure you're in line of sight. You can see right through it, it's like having a heads up display on your on your windshield of your car, it also they come with three different densities on a real bright day you put the real dark ones on and on a uh overcast day like this you can actually fly you know just make it on uh they work really well it's really nice um I think we're getting close to taken awesome questions do we wanted to grab a question here well I didn't know we were gonna fly again with way may later on in a later segment we make it to that because we also want to talk about flight planning and that kind of using ground station we may do that later segment so I think let's let's grab cem cem you know let me just mention one last thing about the cinema misers they come with an adapter so I can fly with the regular old composite using a phone a plug for the video or I can put on an hd eh my adapter and fly with high rez video and when you're sitting at home and you got the flu plug your uh your xbox into it and you can you can have virtual game guards too. Question from terrence here how are you guys dealing with the legacy from the gopro hd am I out? You know there's really I don't know what you've heard about lady see the late c is virtually non existent the bigger late and see issue is usually in your transmitter and the transmitter system that we're having here I'm sure I've seen some figures it's a really uh two nonissue latents that becomes a higher issue when you're doing hd am I uh through the light bridge but the eight but the latent see the lag is through the library system. It seems that the gopro is almost late see free unless you know somebody cares toe contradict me when you talk about the light bridge system for folks at home that don't know what that is we're gonna be showing that later this yeah it's a high end system to send high def video from the skies very cool we'll get to that this afternoon cool! It may be too early to ask this question, but have you heard of anybody using an oculus rift yet? Jen troll I've flown the rift and I have a brand new oculus rift developer to kid coming in a couple weeks, but the thing that's cool about the oculus rift is they have an hd my input so you can fly with the light bridge that we're going to talk about and it's full immersion stereo I have ah a good friend with two gopro's mounted side by side that we fly through a device called the can't remember the name of it, but so you get true three d views from the sky so what's cool is we have these things mounted about this far apart and so it's, like, you're a big bug with eyes out here, and when you fly over house, you feel like it's. Ah, like a miniature house it's, very, very court. I'm like usual the rift. I can't win because the new one has enough resolution. The old one, it's great it's, fun to fly, but it's, just low res it's, like the fat sharks you know, thie oculus rift is this three d head for gaming that allows you when you move your head basically allows for this immersive environment. You're saying that by having two cameras to provide the stereo, you could have this hyper stereo be resting area, and you could do that also with these other goggles. It's, a little more involved. But the rift is really, uh, now set up to be three d f b v, which is just wake away. I'm very, very bullish on the rift.

This is a great course! This workshop was very professionally put together. This was my first experience with CreativeLive and I was impressed at every turn with how well everything turned out. The content was engaging, the guests and instructor gave out many many useful tips on responsible drone operation... I can't say enough great things about this course. I'll be watching many of the segments over and over again to pick up all of the quick golden tips that were shared, as well as picking up the proper industry terms for types of shots, or piloting techniques. Very impressive! Thanks to Jeff Foster, his guests and the entire crew of Creative Live for making this happen. Simply Amazing!

Not for experienced/informed pilots looking for the next level. It was a good intro for those new to the concept of UAV's in photo/video but never got specific enough about maneuvers, equipment, or shooting styles to be useful. The outdoor flying was a complete mess. Demos of what the equipment looked like, not how to best use it creatively. Glad I watched it live. The chat rooms were very informative.
