How can I create a table inside Adobe InDesign?
Hi there in this video. We're going to look at tables in in design. Now, we're going to make this table here. Okay. With little lines and style a little bit. We're also gonna add like ugly alternating rows just to prove we can Okay. Maybe make it a little easier to understand for larger tables. All right, let's get going. Okay. First of all, we're going to put on our table and minds on page 12. We're looking for profitability. I don't really mind where it goes. Okay? So we're gonna put our curse in here. Put a return in and it's gonna go right here. Next step, go up to table and go to insert table. Okay? And in this case we're going to have five and two and it's kind of remembered that from the last time I did this when I was prepping for this example. So he was probably going to say three and three by default, but just Yeah, five and two is going to work for us. In this case we're not going to use header and footer rows. They're a lot more complicated and really good when you're doing...
tables that may be crossing over lots of pages and pages and pages of a big table. Okay. And we'll look at that in our advanced in design course. But for the moment, 99 times out of 100 you're just going to use body rows and columns. We're gonna fake your heading. Don't get me wrong, but we don't want to use these specialized heading rows. Okay. Let's click. Ok and nicely, it kind of fits in where we need it to be if you're creating one that's not part of a text box, I'm gonna go down just a blank box, blank page down the end here somewhere and just go I've got nothing selected. Go to table, create table and again I can just click OK. And then I can drag it out to any size I need. Okay, it's up to you how you get it created, but I'm going to jump up to page 12. That little shortcut there was command J. Ok or control J on a pc and I typed in 12 and it returned Okay. I caught myself doing shortcuts anyway, so what we're gonna do is just some basic stuff. So this first column here, I want to join. So I'm gonna select these two. And along the top here we get some basic table options. And what I want to do is this one little like on here, it's got like a little cross between, it's called merge cells. So I'm going to select both of these two. Kind of just drag across them and click merge cells and this one is going to be like our turnover and we'll put it in U. S. Dollars. It's going to add some details here. Okay, So that might have been painfully slow when you were watching it on fast mode. Okay took me I just type that in and I'm not sure why, but what we want to do a couple of things is I want to align this because it doesn't have to be as long a column all these quarters. Okay. But I want this to be a bit bigger so you can click hold and drag it. Okay I have to be using my type tool to do these amends. Okay so I can drag this across and then what I'm going to do is drag this side across so it kind of lines up with the column again. Now to do the styling, I'm going to quickly select it all and pick my paragraph style. So I'm gonna go to Styles paragraph styles and I'll pick body copy to get started. You know, highlight this one here. And I'm just going to go through and pick Roboto, I'll pick bold and I'll go to color. Okay so next thing I wanna do is I want to play around with these lines. I just want the vertical horizontal lines. Okay one's going left to right and I want to get rid of these tall ones here and the ones at the top and the bottom. I just want kind of like lines through the middle to help read it and make it look a little nicer. So now we're going to work with the borders around tables and guess what? It's not that easy. Okay, it's a little bit fiddly is what it is. Okay so I'm gonna select all of these, You can use your type tool and just click and drag across all of these or you can click anywhere and see this little arrow that just appears you just click that either way. Um What we need to do now is either see this version or that's quite small and hard to use. This one is big and hard to use. Okay so I'm going to use the stroke panel one. Okay you can use this tiny one at the top here. What I need to do is we need to first of all activate all the lines by making them all go blue because by default just see the tops bottoms left and right. I want these ones in the middle as well. I got them all, there's me leaning in really close to the screen to see. Okay and I think I've got them all and I'm going to say I'd like them also that you've done nothing now you just kind of like highlighted them to say the next thing I'm gonna do is going to apply to all the blue bits that I've got selected. I'm gonna say I'd like them all to be zero points. Now if I click in here they all have no lines around the outside. Okay now a little bit weird because we're in working mode so it gives you this kind of like blue hint that's not actually there won't print if I go to the black selection tool that w you'll see they're not actually there. That just there is like a visual guide. Next thing I'd like to do, select them all again is I'm going to say I want just to add a thickness to their lines going through left and right. So it's just these middle ones here. So I'm gonna have to try and I'm gonna lean in close again, turn all the blue lines off, just oh so close, lots of clicking. Just this one here. Okay so just this one going through the middle, not the outside ones, just the middle one. I'd like to give it a stroke of say half a point and I'd like that stroke over here to be a color of, I'll use the green, dark green, mint green. Cool. Now let's look at it, click off that w hey you've got lines through the middle. Only now if you need to work on just one cell let's say you need to like this is like the total for one. Okay you need to do a select all command a no you don't. You kind of like drag across it all until eventually you get the whole cell. Okay so I want the whole thing just keep dragging, dragging, dragging, drag down a little bit and you grab the whole cell and now I can say things like you can see I've just got the one cell selected. So now I can say actually I want to give it a weight of two points. I want to make it red because it's the total. Um it's looking a little horrible but you get the idea right, so you can select the whole thing through the whole thing. Do little bits. I'm going to click undo. You're of that. One thing you might do in tables, okay, is play around with one of the styles. So let's select it all again a little lower in the corner. It's a little bit harder to see. I'm gonna turn my w back on so I can see the edges there you are, grab it all, go up to table, let's go to table options and we're going to do this alternating fills. This can be kind of handy. Our table is pretty easy to understand but what you might do this, where you go, alternating fills, alternating pattern is going to be every other row turn preview on and you can kind of see in the background there what it's doing, it's going to see the first row is black and the second row is none. I'm going to click OK, and it just means that's going to happen. Okay, so every alternating row is going to be this dark kind of well it's gonna be black but it's set to a tint. Let's have a little look again and let's go to table table options, alternating fills and previews on, you see it set the black and 20%. What I might do actually is just set it to how yellow And set it 10-100%. So it's not so wishy washy and you can also say I'd like to skip the first row because I would like to leave that white. Great. Let's click. Ok, We've got a table. I think I liked it before. Just the lines. But hey, we've learned alternating fills as well. Alright, so that's how to create and style our own table. Let's look in the next video. How to bring in something from Word or Excel.

I think Dan is very good at explaining and breaking down complex content. I like the way there are lots of small sessions which is good for keeping focus. I would advise anyone who does this course and is taking notes to label which session the notes are referring to as I have struggled to find a few looking back and this helped me. It really made me realise how much I didn't know and had been fudging. Thank you Dan I will be taking plenty more of your courses in the coming months it's been a great help.

Excellent course, instructor is great well spoken, clear and a great teacher. I highly recommend this class for beginners and those who learned indesign on their own.
