Effects Overview

I want to show you how to create a slide montage the reason slide montages air useful especially if you're a photographer it's a great way to create a simple way of animating your slides lay down a piece of music and add some slides I'm going to work with some still images and just create a slide montage which is a simple way of of creating video without actually shooting video then we'll go from slide montage into creating a picture in picture picture and pictures where two images or superimposed on top of each other and we'll start to explore effects by looking at a drop shadow effect then and I think this is really cool we're going to import a photoshopped document now importing a photoshopped document is actually got more options than we would at first think but the big deal is that we can take a simple photo shop documents say a three layer photoshopped document an animated and here we're going to get into your discussion of key frames that you talked about beforehand I want to ta...

lk about how we can apply effects to take a layered photoshopped graphic which you've already created using tools that you already know drop it into premiere and create a simple animated open or a simple animated logo which could be applied anywhere and then another thing that we do inside photo shop a lot is select something and drop out the background select the background and knock it out we can do the exact same thing in video we have to use a different technique which is called green screen or chroma key so we'll look at slide montages creating picture and pictures animating a photoshopped document creating a chroma key and then we'll have time to talk about exporting and creating master files let's start with a slide montage I want to just highlight everything command a hit the big delete key to make it disappear and let's bring in ah few slides so first thing I'm gonna do is let's get ourselves organized I'm going to click on the project file press that till dickie create a new bin and call that been media and inside media I'm going take the doctor surf clips, which I'm not going to use I just told the command key down and click on dr surf dragged that into media conducted way I'll take from a poem will take thie rest of this stuff here drop that into media take this stuff dropping into media haven't moved it, but now when I twirl media up things for a whole lot more organized let's now import tilda go to the media browser tilda again we'll go to our second drive, go to source media, go to still images and let's do some nature shots all right let's see we'll do this one and we'll do this one I'm holding the command key down oh this stuck is very famous duck I use this in my classes at usc and I it's one of the images to my students work with when you're first learning video editing and that poor doctors had mohr effects applied to it I'm surprised that duck is able to hold its head up in polite society because of what's been done to it in the annals of higher education, so we're going to simply select these images click import press that till the key go back to the project panel there's two ways that you could work when you're creating a image montage one is you could add the image first and then you add music this is useful when you're working with video and you're cutting on action but if you're working with stills I find it's much easier to actually put the music in first and then we will cut the video to suit so let's take a listen to the audio here and let's see what this clip sounds like I'm going to highlight it and uh I'm gonna grab that clip I want to drag it up and let's take a listen let's go back to media browser I think there's one other one that I may want to use let's just take a listen tilda and go to audio files and take a listen to teo attached to what I want import that and tilda to pull it back down project file let's grab are still life clip and just drag it over and because it's a stereo clip it's a single clip we can see both tracks by expanding all tracks there's our left and right channel but I don't need to see them because I'm not going to edit them. I just need to hear it will play it make sure our levels are below zero like meg ryan all right, so now we're going to add some stills to this let's start with our our mountain shot and let's listen to the music again and see if we can ferret where the beets are kind of up for four time way yeah, it's definitely four four time for measures to a phrase, so we'll have each last four measures will put the first clip in here and edit that down and we're going to patch this so it goes to the one period let's hear what it sounds like. Oh, see this yellow bar remember the question we got from a stella at the beginning who's talking about the different color bars this represents a render bar, the project settings and the clip settings don't match from rates don't match frame size doesn't match the codex may not match, so what the yellow bar indicates is that before this gets out put it must be rendered rendered simply means to calculate its going to calculate a form of this because it's a still image that's going to turn it into video, turn it into video and to do that it's just warning us with these yellow lines that it has to be rendered before output so I'm going to trim that teo here, grab it and drag it here we go good so that's the first one and noticed that I'm cutting on the beat so let's drag this one down and see how long it is double click it and it runs five seconds and thirteen frames will grab this one and drag it so it runs five seconds and thirteen frames there is a keyboard shortcut that sets the duration we're talking about this at lunch today I knew I forgot to look something off we do not want the music to end there, okay? So we'll just at our third one, we'll just edit that down to the timeline pull it over and I said it to be five thirteen give or take a little bit and play okay, I want to do uh one more all right shift said do the backslash key? I'm going to do three, but what I'm doing is it was off by about two frames I found it easiest if I set my clips to match the beat of the music now thurston argument that says you should never added on the beat of the music because it's too predictable but basically there's a beat to the music because we like feeling the beat to the music and the shot changes on the beat to the music reinforce that emotion when in doubt add it to the beat of the music and generally added to the downbeat notice that there's a theme here try to follow that flow, but that doesn't mean that we have to stay with cuts if I select all of these clips type command d instantly, I've added dissolves between all the different clips, so now when we play it back, it looks like this and notice how the dissolves tend to reinforce the emotion of what we're talking about. Now I would do this a little bit longer, but if all you had is a siri's of still images, it isn't that hard to create a simple piece of music music montage post that up to you to put your website at the bottom of it. Save these incredible images created by an incredible photographer done without having to spend a ton of time shooting video or worrying about video editing. You just dropped the image in added dissolve and output, which you'll learn before the end of the day piece of cake not hard, it all makes sense even third graders can do this it's just amazing jim there's hope for you you know let's take a look something different we can kill the audio on the computer I'm going tio take a mountain shot here we'll edit this down to the time line and we'll hit the back slash key so I've got a mountain shot those of you who are paying close attention will notice that there's letter boxing at the top and bottom I have not for gotten it out but I'm avoiding talking about it for another exhibit another example and then we will show you how to solve that okay? So there's one shot and I want to say, what does a tree at cali anti california which is right on the edge of some very, very hot territory? What is a tree at that part of the world thinking about? And the answer is it's thinking about snow so let's find a snow clip here and their snow blowing through trees whenever you want to have two pictures on screen at the same time they have to be stacked one on top of each other, so I'm going to stack these two clips one on top of each other notice the first I've got this tree near the edges of the desert and then second this week retreat and again for right now next couple minutes we're ignoring the letter boxing at the top of the bottle however, by default every image inside premier is always one hundred percent full screen always one hundred percent opaque which means that this top clip is exactly the same size and fully opaque there by blocking the clip below it we need to figure out some way of making this top clip smaller so that I can see the clip that's underneath it to do that we select the clip and we go up to the effect controls town there are a number of built in effects that are applied to every clip inside premier one controls its motion one controls opacity and won control speed there are lots of other effects that we can assign to the clip but for right now these are the ones that are built in will twirl down this triangle which allows us to alter its position and its size its rotation its anchor point and it's flickering we're going to deal with all but the flicker filter in the next example for today right this instant rather I just want to work with scale, click hold and drag and as I dragged scale smaller I now have one image on top of another image and by default they're centered now here premier made the decision that I'm not sure I agree with but they emulated what photo shop does and it works and photo shop it's less effective inside video we have to define a coordinate system for where objects are located and in photoshopped zero zero point is the top left corner everything is measured from the top left to the right for us on early and from the top down vertically the same zero zero point is also used by premier, but it makes it really, really hard to make adjustments because you're always having to figure out exactly how big the image sizes and where's the center and it's just too complex. So premier gives us another way out it's this icon right here which does not call attention to itself in the least when you click on it, it opens up what's called a wire frame, and if you look very closely around the edges of the smaller image you see there's a light golden wire frame around it. I'm going to simply grab that image, which is now selected and drag it up to here let's, turn on our safe marchionne's and talk it up against the edges of action safe right about there and again we're going to ignore for about another minute a half we're going to ignore the letter boxing at the top and bottom. I click off the clip to de selected and I now have a picture inside a picture which if we look at it in more detail our picture cuts in and notice that it may be a still image down below, but it's a moving image up above here I'm old school, the current thinking, the latest design philosophy, which designers follow because they're very, oh, karate is a very flat layout where everything is that the same horizontal plane I'm a big fan of depth because there is no depth and video, you've got to create the illusion of depth either through depth of field or drop shadows or something else, but I would like to have the feeling that this tree image here and this floating above the tree image there the easiest way to do that is to add a drop shadow and drop shadows are not a built in effect, they're part of an effect which can be assigned, and all effects inside premier are assigned to the clip. So where do we find effects? We control the effect by going to the effect controls tab, but we find the effects from the effects tab. This is where we went earlier when we were looking for video transitions, and we discovered that slide. We can also look for video effects, and there are dozens and dozens of effects that ship with premier now fx factory is a third party plug in that I use on my system that we can, we can ignore the way we because it won't exist on your show see a number of of effects from a number of companies are installed here and I'm looking for a drop shadow effect, so I'm going to select the video effects folder that tells premiere where to search when simply type the word drop, it finds an eyedropper film which I'm not interested in, but also finds a drop shadow rather than have to remember where anything is. Simply select the video effects folder type the word or a few letters from the effect that you're looking for, and it will then appear grabbed the effect and drop it on top of the clip that you want to make the effect of this case I just dropped the drop shadow effect on top of the clip. Let's go over where the drop shadow effect is located. We have the ability to change the opacity, the direction of distance let's make the distance a lot bigger. Let's make the softness a lot softer. Let's make the darkness a lot darker and notice now we have a nice drop shot of effect that is really obvious because I want to be sure you see it that's really obvious so that you can see that there is now depth between the foreground, snow trees and a background trace. Now, in point of fact, I would also blur the background will do that in the next exercise, for right now we are creating a picture in picture effect by superimposing one clip on another clip like we are here selecting the top clip, you always adjust the top clip because if you just the bottom clipped the top clip blocks it you can't see the bottom clips adjustments until you've made the top clip either translucent door smaller so we adjust the top clip well this gets into something that lance was asking earlier how do I automate that process? Well, first let me do one other thing if I go down to this bottom clip here notice I've got the black bars here's how you get rid of those you either go to premier pro preferences general and make sure that default scaled to frame sizes on, which will then automatically scale the clip to fill the frame or if that doesn't work in there's options like here where it doesn't select the clip go to the motion tab and simply increased to stay a scale by click hold on dragging and scale the image up until it fills the frank then now I've got my winter tree placed on top of my summer tree again click this little icon here and drag it up put it against the corner of action safe, which is not on, but I have enough experience dealing with this that I could get a pretty close and andy select clip so now we finished our picture in picture we stack two clips here's the cool part, there's. No limit to the number of clips that you can stack. I can create a picture on top of a picture on top of a picture on top of a picture that thirty one layer effect was actually a monthly calendar. I had one image on the bottom, which was the grid. And then inside each one of the thirty one days I had a piece of video which was playing to show a particular event that was part of a festival that was occurring on each day of that particular month. So I had a clip on each. Each track I had thirty two tracts stacked the bottom graphic with the grid for the month in the text. And then each day of the month on tracks two through thirty two was a piece of video, which was reduced in size and perfectly placed inside the grid so that we would be able to see all the different video playing for the days of the month. And then I would then take each day and have it fly out full screen. So would start with the full month and the day would fly out, and I would do it dissolve or no chase a white, because that was the open I would wipe from that into video that covered the particular event from that day.

We are so happy that we bought this class. This is the prefect introduction for beginners. We admire not only Larry's knowledge but his talent & willingness to share it. He does it very well! We personally love his humor, (you may call it sarcastic). He makes it easy to learn & remember this way; much easier than a dry, word to word presentation. We owned Premier Pro for a long time, but remained intimidated by its spaceship-like appearance & got quickly overwhelmed. Not anymore! Thank you, Larry, you are fantastic!

Larry is a terrific teacher - for me this course had a great balance of tech and artistic teachings - While he can be a little cheesy at times he gets away with this well because of his clear ability to teach and to teach clearly. When looking for the next level to take on I hope he is an option!
