Class Introduction
Right now this is Advanced Photo Retouching Techniques with Lindsey Adler, would you help me welcome back to the Creative Live stage, Lindsey Adler. (audience applause) Hey everybody thanks for joining me and in case you didn't know I am a fashion photographer, I shoot fashion, I shoot beauty, I shoot portraits and retouching is an inextricable part of my career of my job. And it's important for so many different reasons, it is important partially because my job is to bring out the best in my subjects and I always try to do that in camera as much as possible, posing and lighting and the clothing choices and all of that. But of course now a days there are just these expectations of what people are looking for in the finished image and a lot of times that really does involve a certain amount of retouching. And one of the things that I think I have particular experience with is the range of what is expected for a retouch from portrait to high-end beauty. I have to do everything, and so ...
one of the things that you should know going into this segment and one of the things that is going to save you your life and sanity is realizing that not all pictures should be retouched the same. Not all pictures should have the same amount of time spent on them, it's really something that took me a long time to understand, but it makes my life so much easier. So when I do a portrait image, I understand that what I'm doing really is I'm trying to keep the essence of the individual but then do touch-ups that get rid of distractions. Things that perhaps aren't permanent on them like a blemish or maybe they just look a little bit more tired and I'm just lightening up those bags under the eyes. But really, I'm keeping it subtle and I'm keeping it not distracting, however, on a high-end beauty image, total opposite end of the spectrum, it is perfection. I want every single pore to look perfect, I want the skin to be completely even. But I want it to be that extreme without being blatantly obvious and fake. And then there's also the other area where I do creative retouching where I might go over the top but I might make someone into a porcelain doll but that's okay because that was the point of it. So to start this off, I'm going to take you through a wide range of different retouching techniques, I will start off with some more basic things just because I really need everyone to be on the same page about those and then I will show you the expectations for a high-end retouch and then also understanding that there are shortcuts you can do that aren't technically right but sometimes you should probably do them so you don't spend six hours on an image. And other times an image really might take three hours to retouch, so I'm going to try to give you my tips and tricks to save your sanity and everything in between. So what I'm going to do now is I'm going to start kind of at the beginning and I'm going to build nice and slowly over my favorite techniques, and I'm going to give you a bunch of different subject areas, just for those of you who are curious, I will definitely be covering frequency separation. I will be covering localized dodge and burning. I will also be covering global dodge and burning including contouring, I will be covering liquified, those sorts of things. And I will begin however with some essential tools.

One of my favorite instructors. Lindsay Adler is an excellent instructor, great personality, incredibly talented. This edited-down video "Advanced Photo Retouching" (watched several times live and non-live), is great, because all the unnecessary pauses and down-time are edited out. Cutting down the time commitment to a more manageable block of time. It's hard to dedicate 9-5 online live classes without compromising your own work schedule. So, I appreciate very much being able to watch these edited videos. Thanks Lindsay and Creative Live!

This course has an abundance of extremely useful information. I learned so much. I do need to keep going over certain sections so it sinks in, but Lindsey does a wonderful job explaining in detail what all the important things are and leaves out what she knows just isn't necessary to get into. That leaves us with a very useful course that doesn't have drawn out parts that seem time wasting. Lindsey gets straight to the point. And I so appreciate that. She really is an amazing teacher.

Well worth the price of the class! This course goes into more detail than her Advanced Beauty Retouching class. I would recommend a good working knowledge of layers & masks before doing this kind of retouching, but Lindsay makes it very easy to understand.
