Content Aware, Free Transform and Puppet Warp
let's talk about some other challenges we may face and how we can try to address them for example in this photo this is a stock image that I want to use for some purpose but I want tohave mohr room over on this side to add something like maybe some text so my options be to somehow and this is take a step back this is a perfect example of what non photo shop users will look at and say we'll just move the badminton thing to the right just move it to the right and of course anyone of us use force up knows that's not such an easy task or at least it didn't used to be but with some of the newer technology thanks to content aware that might be something we're trying to show you several different versions of this the first one is let's see if we keep the documents eyes the same and then has tried to move the badminton bird over someone add a new layer use one of my tools call the content aware move tool and I'm going to do a couple things first of all I haven't set on move and I also to sampl...
e all layers that's very important because I want the results to go on a blank layer but I also want photoshopped to do all the heavy lifting for me so I just make kind of a rough selection around the badminton bird and I move it also I really like it to be over here now before I let go let me pause and say think about what we used to have to do to do this would have popped on zone layer moved it over and then taking the clone stamp tool for twenty five minutes to cover up where it used to be now we just let go and say how about you do all that work for me now it's not perfect but it's not bad this is a new part of this tool which we can play around with this color setting and have it see if we can update it and often it will do a better job like that not bad I mean it's not perfect who looks a little off but again compared to the alternative me sitting there doing all that myself at least it affords us that opportunity to try it on what I would probably do in this case is go back to the patch tool now say let's try toe there's a couple areas it just looked a little blurry to me so let's try and see if we can just pick a spot that might kind of match a little better something I'm not that's too much so it's getting there it still would take some work but all of us we have to keep in perspective that compared to what we used to have to do to do something like that that still didn't take that long so that would be option number one option two might be to say well I'm okay with making the document itself a little bit longer on one side so I take the crop tool and let's just shorten this side and lengthen this side like this so now we have great have extended the canvas but I don't have anything in there now first class yesterday I talked about how to use the crop tool to do this but one of the things was in that example I just had a fairly plain white background that I was able to use content of worth scale in this case contents where scale would not work because there's too much detail in this grass but here's how I could try to get it to work and again let photoshopped you most the work for me take the marquis selection tool to estimate how much I need I need about that much but just to be safe I liked you and I have no evidence to back up the fact that this makes any difference or not this is just me thinking it probably helps it may or may not I take my lasso tool with the sheep shit shifty shifty the shift key held down and I'm just random izing that right hand edges so it's not quite so straight down what that makes any difference at all I honestly don't know I just do it because when I first tried it it seemed to make it there so I go back to the content aware move tool which was a c s six edition but in this case I change it from move to extend so what this allows me to is now as I pull this over and then let go it does some calculations and attempts to blend it in better so that it won't look quite so obvious that I moved it over and what's interesting to me look at where just add a guidelines you see this is where I really needed that extra grass and look at how much extra it put in has all this other that it attempted so what that suggests to me is if I look at ongoing not one hundred percent sold on it I could take a layer mask not with the wood desk brush itis created but one of the more standard kind of a brush and maybe set maybe a fifty percent opacity paint on my mask and just try and if there's any areas that really jumped out at me and just look two artificial I'm kind of doing some manual about that side some manual blending as well so I went a little farther so again this is an example where we look at it right now with ultra critical eyes because we know we just added that part but if you step away from from her second gun go well did that actually work and also it depends on the circumstances remember I started this off by saying the whole reason I would do this is because eventually I want to for example create a big white box wrong layer here we go that I changed the fifty percent capacity and puts him text over the top of that so now it doesn't it's not incredibly crucial that that background looks perfect is going to be partially covered up anyway so we always have to I think the conscious off what's our endgame here is with the again and result is to put a big block of text over the top of our background as long as the background looks reasonably good it's going to end up looking okay because we're going to be distracted by other stuff if you just want to keep it as is and put in a photo book or something then that would be a little different we have to spend a bit more time trying to make it look the way we want so both of those are options the third option I'm going to give it a shot here it's this is one of the most challenging is doing photo shop and I'm gonna deliberately give myself on extra big challenge trying to do it from this photograph and that is I showed you before about how we can make a pattern but it has some pretty obvious seems in it so I want teo it's I should just reverted okay I'm going to try to make pattern out of grass which is really difficult but we'll give it a shot and I say that because I actually didn't try this ahead of time I have no idea if it even has a remote chance of working or not but we'll see so I'm going to select that area copy make a new document it automatically has the right size and I can choose paste now if I just defined that as a pattern you would see there's a very definite edge between this side and this side and the top and the bottom that's where you would see that repetition of line to show you what I mean by the way you don't have to select anything it will automatically make a pattern out of the entire document so we'll just to show you what this looks like homemaker a bigger document so we can test it out and see and if I just go under edit phil and shoes pattern and go and find that grass that I just made you can see as I look it has a very obvious repeating pattern phil feel to it you can see as we zoom out in further you can see it's very obvious that it's a siri's of squares so we want to do is try and eliminate that as much as possible and depending on the texture whatever you're using it could be they're really easy or quite difficult and in this case I'm guessing seymour on the difficult scale but we'll find out in about three seconds so what we want to do is we want to make sure that that the edges on the top and the bottom are going to match up in the edges on the side and the other side of gonna match up and we do that by using a filter called other and then offset and here we have to figure out how far if I paid attention to the size it would be easier but I didn't so let's just see where we're at hold on one second I'm gonna do a quick four seventy five seventy okay so that will be easier usually I do it knowing the size of my documents so uh offset what we want to do is is move it so the top edge goes to the middle and the side as goes the middle so the seam will actually be in the middle of our document so the good news is it's kind of hard to see which is actually a good thing so we can see the scene but I can see right now again add guides the scene because this first scene is right there and there so you see how you could see there's a difference but not that I control right now but this bottom edge now matches up perfectly with this top edge and this right hand side matches up perfectly with the left hand side so all I've done the moment is shifted the scene to the middle and the reason we do that is now I can try to start covering up the scene so you don't see it in one of several ways I could use thie patch tool of content where moved tool this rubber wants to rubber stamp again where that's coming from the clone stamp anything you want we're just trying to get so that seem isn't anywhere near as obvious and sometimes what the real solution the only thing have to be really careful you don't touch these top edges want to get very close so I always do a bit of somewhere along the way some clone stamping so we're actually seeing blades of grass and not just sort of blurriness that you're wondering what is that exactly in order to make this more realistic I want to try and remove any obvious repetition of elements so like there I just repeated this exact same little twig there is um an option for the clone stamp tool that doesn't I don't use it all that often this would be a case where I would it's called the clone source panel and what that does is normally when you clone you optional click to say clone from here paint over there and it's exactly the same angle but in this case and I want to random it randomizer what I want to do is clone from here but changed the angle slightly so it's not exactly the same and that's what this allows me to do his change it like this so now if I say I want to take this twig when I go to painted it at a slightly different angles I'm not doing everything to the point where just looks like exactly an exact repetition of things and I'm doing this really fast just to show you the idea but ideally I probably should have picked the difference up where was a lot clearer to see but right now I can see some pretty obvious repetition so in the real world I would be trying tow update this he wouldn't see that as much so well this may or may not work ideally but I want to at least see you show you the procedure and now I can define a brush again and when I come on this one fill with my pattern so it's a little better I can still see that I just kind of shifted the line a little bit I didn't quite do it I don't if I picked the right one actually hold on a second sure I have started again I don't think I got my new pattern there so thank you and that would explain it it's one thing why that happened there we go that should be better okay it's better it's down they can still see kind of a repeating element but it's better than it wass and again we have to put this into some perspective if I was creating this grassy background that I was eventually gonna put other stuff on top of it and it wouldn't be as obvious that I wouldn't keresey much but from a designing things perspective you khun do some interesting things with patterns on once you have a pattern and there it stays in photos off and you can always back up your paris to do interesting things with it so let's do example here okay so actually let me just use this one so I have this awful looking character and I want to do some effect to it to make it look a little different so my thought is to do kind of a screening effect over the top of him to try something stolen goingto make a pattern if you make a repeating pattern it doesn't have to be very big for example I want to create what effect is a striped line so I can make it two hundred pixels by thirty pixels or even smaller now if I really wanted to doesn't matter and closer I have smart guides turned on so when I get to the middle part I know now that's exactly halfway if you didn't have that option you'd have to use guides or something to let you know that's exactly halfway whenever you make a pattern it will make it out of whatever you have on your screen so I don't want there to be any white in this patterns are gonna make a new layer filled with black and then hide the background so I will now make a pattern that has a black stripe and then transparent when repeats it'll end up being a series of black stripes and because there's nothing on e j and it will just be a cz wide as I needed so he doesn't have to be an enormous pattern for this to work so I choose defined pattern and now I have that set to go so now back on this guy let's do a little affection I'm gonna select all and then copy now when I make go to add a pattern there's a couple of options with one of them that's the easiest is under the phyllis we just saw there is the ability to fill using a pattern the one thing I don't like about this is it on ly fills with the pattern in the size you defined it so if I filled this and then realize the stripes were too big or too small kind of out of luck in this case they looked somewhat what I want but I want the option at least to edit the size it's the way I do that is I'm gonna fill this blank layer I just created with fifty percent great doesn't have to first grade just did that for the sake of argument but then I'm gonna use an adjustment layer sorry let's do it this way and caesar eh laywer style called pattern overlay and there's always cracks me up because the pattern that it defaults to is the one that adobe invited called bubbles pattern which is you know a terribly useful pattern that we use almost every day filled with bubbles sure so let's go find our pattern there it is and again the advantage of it is I have a little scale dialogue so I can either make it much bigger or considerably smaller and that's one of the big advantages of using the layer style too fill a layer with a pattern but you also notice if I make it bigger there's no transparency because in order to use a layer style your layer must have some content you can't add a layer style to a blank layer so what I need to do is go back to my default blending options and use the phil opacity to zero now I see I just get the black strikes which is what I want so now you go back to the pattern overlay I can get the size that I want something like probably that and because it's a layer so it means I can eventually change the size once I finish the technique so now we'll add a layer mask optional click on it and she was paced remember I copied the guy's face before now I look at it if I hide this layer and put a new layer below filled with white we get this kind of weird negative effect so I just invert that guy and now I've created an effect that we can still see his face but it's made up of just the lines as opposed to having his face in there you could still build this in and if you want to have a bit of color in there you could still start to introduce this other layer back and so that part's up to you I could also potentially and I'm just freestyling here convert this to a smart object and then hit free transform transform he said free transformed but still nothing happened ok let's go sure good okay there we go and then use the warp button and start to his face is work to look and I really want that so that's let's go back a step how about I do this unlike this and then free transform that there we go so now I can start we'll still not working as a patent okay I understand why it's happening okay let me try that one more time throw this away now I know what the problem is the reason was happening is because you can't distort the grave has a patterns what I need to do it just changed my approach convert this to a smart object first then add a layer mask paste my guy's face on there and inverted unlinked the two now if I click on this and do free transform transform now okay maybe it's just not gonna cooperate today all right then I want to let me free transform that that's what I should be able to anyway the point of this whole exercises I did find a small little pattern I was able very quickly to apply it using this pattern overlay and because it's smart and it's a layer style I can always go in and adjust and try different things I could add some color back into what I could do whatever I want the only thing you cannot do is once you have applied a pattern you can't just say when I want to be read you'd have to go and make a new pattern that was red and transparent I mean you could get to that effect in other ways but any time you are making a new pattern you need to apply it in a different way or make a new pattern so let's look at another example of something you might want to try now patterns have it around for a long time but one of the photo shop cs six they started something and now it's available in photo shop si si twenty fourteen with more option that's kind of interesting and that is the ability to make a pattern out of something and I'll just show you the start of it could make a used the custom shaped tool and do something like uh see what I wanna do something interesting um well maybe I could do a little foot printers on pop print and this and I could define that as a pattern I've already done something I want to show you so this is the new part is we now have the option of creating a path of some kind using our pen tool and then with that with that path active and choose pattern place a long path and if you take one like say this one here click okay and brings up now this new little dialog box that says how many what wouldyou liketo have and you can even do alternating patterns the spacing is too far apart so like this and then I can change the distance from the path she spacing so all I did was I defied one brush which was a little footprint but thou because that's a pattern this dialog box automatically says would you like to alternate it so in this case now I've got the look of little feet walking along following my little path which is kind of interesting now I'm going very quickly move on to things that aren't specific to photo shop c c twenty fourteen latest update but this one I was had not heard about this a lot usually I'm fairly aware of new things with this one totally threw me for a loop and I was just like I don't know that I'll ever use it but it's still really was going to say cool but it's really hot because what you can do I've got all I've done is black background layer red type I'm going to take this type player and she was create work path which will automatically make a path as if I do it from the pen tool but still preserved the text on this blank layer I goto my filter menu and she was render flame and it's gonna warn me something about the number of the paths but what it basically does that lets you generate fire based on the path with a zillion options in here that I've seen yet begun to explore but different you know do you want one flame along the path or multiple frames the different angles and would you like violent flames or normal and would you like this or that anyway you have all these options you click okay it takes a moment or two because got to calculate going around the path but this is one of these things were given the alternative which is I don't know what taking a photograph of fire and trying to somehow make it work I really don't know it's gonna generate these flames on a separate layer based on this path and see it's taking a bit of time but I'm okay with that but I don't know short of somehow getting letters and lighting them on fire I'm not sure how I would have done that in previous murders the photo shop now whether you jump up and down I go oh my gosh I can use that every day I look a technology like this you know if they can do that what else is coming because that's a pretty remarkable thing to me that they could do that kind of thing um amore typical kind of one that you might actually use everyday is there's two other options one of which isn't new but it just moved you can also render a picture frame so we used to have all these tutorials showed how to make a frame around your photograph now you just pick which one do you want some of which frankly are a little bit odd like snowflakes and little flowers but you also have all these different frames and you can click okay and then no time at all you've got a little frame around your image which is kind of cool and then the last one that they this one was not new was introduced recently but kind of interesting as well for the right audience as you can also do if you just need some trees for your architectural drawings or something like that there's this whole dialogue lexus what type of tree would you like and there's many of them and then you can pick all the options for if you want an oak tree what's the like direction how many branches et cetera when you click okay it generates a tree which is cool for the right audience those were just sort of size but the main reason I show those I just thinking that's pretty interesting if they can do that what else is coming next if that's one of the option that's available to them

I am an experienced photographer and retoucher and this Advanced Photoshop class with Dave Cross was exactly what I was hoping to find. I know how to accomplish everything I need in Photoshop, but was looking for the ways that I could update my workflow with the new features that have been added by Adobe. The complete use of Smart Objects and libraries is already changing my life and is incredibly useful and time saving. Dave gave a great explanation about the coarse at the beginning as to the fact that he just wanted to help users make their workflow better and he did just that...and in an enjoyable way. I highly recommend this class!

While not highly experienced in PS I'm also not a newbie. I've done a few other online courses and am a member of other training sites but very quickly found I got information here that I hadn';t yet come across. Nesting smart objects and the non-destructive editing abilities they give me was one of those light bulb moments. Lots of other useful information in this course. Had to try the CC Library as a result. Very useful..... wish it saved the layer comps with your file though. Put some of these new learnt skills into a composite straight away.... did I say I'm loving nested smart objects!! A great course Dave.

Brilliant, love Dave's clear presentation style which is easy to follow, simply had to buy this one. I thought i had a pretty good grasp on photoshop but I'm delighted at how some of these seemingly simple tips and tricks have improved the quality of my final images and the speed at which I can work.
