Choosing Your Content Mix
So now I wanna talk about choosing your content mix and deciding which types of posts you should be using on your blog. Remember, so just kind of a rundown again, we've got our product posts and our brand posts. I'm not gonna read those lists out loud again because the more times I say post, the more tongue tied I get. (laughs) But what I want you guys to do is choose three to four post types to focus on. Start by thinking about which types of posts work well with your products. There are some things that are just gonna seem like they lend themselves naturally easier to your products than others. We all have different product categories. Think about what would make sense there. Then think about which types of posts would attract your ideal customer. Is your ideal customer gonna wanna read interviews? Are they not? Does your ideal customer care about style? Do they not? Start to think about that's going to attract your ideal customer. Then think about which types of posts would lend the...
mselves to the tone or the aesthetic or the editorial angle of your blog. You already have outlined some of those things, and so some are gonna be easier than others. It may be hard to kind of pull off the tone that you want if you're always running interviews because now it's somebody else's tone, and not yours. Then, of course, remember which types of posts are going to be easiest for you to create and which types of posts would you like to avoid. Think about what's not gonna work for you. I don't wanna do interviews, and I certainly don't wanna do posts that require me to take pictures of myself. We don't wanna set ourselves up for failure.

I don't agree with Megan's assessment that writing a how-to process will only attract your peers and competitors, not your ideal customers. I know a lot of graphic designers who post design tutorials frequently and it only helps raising their profiles. Writing a how-to post doesn't have to be like shooting in your foot because: * You don't have to share everything. There's more to great designs than knowing how to draw a certain thing. Composition, color, typography etc all come into play. * Even if you're given a step by step tutorial, it's very likely that you will stumble into a lot of issues or it takes you too much effort and time to complete it and it's better to hire a professional designer. Web building tutorials are everywhere, but web developers and designers still have their places. There's a big difference between knowing and understanding. * Even if you're professional designer, sometimes it's better to buy from your colleague than to make it on your own because no designer is excellent at every aspect of design and for a designer, time is as much valuable as money. For example, web designer may need to purchase custom typefaces from a font designers, and reading a blog which indicates that the writer knew his stuff will inform the web designer to make a rightful decision. Other than that, the course is rich information packed with a lot of actionable strategies and real fact about the blogging landscape.
