Creative Interior Design Ideas for Your Studio

I am so honored to have my dear friend's hand and gina come and do a program for us this morning they own design you guys tell me I forgot to tell me the name of your design studio lorella design studios can you tell us a little about your company? Our company is a full service interior design show room we don't limit ourselves to just the interior we also do outside things as well but we sell the product as well as all of space planning as well as helping manage projects so we helped find contractors were just sort of ah one stop shopping type place so we start generally in one room and in one space and then we morph our way around the house so we're hard to get rid of once we get ourselves in the door and I met these girls actually they're designed space is right next to one of my favorite people that you met earlier this week and that is hip chick designs carry clayton and I was actually in curios shop one day about two months ago thinking I really needed to do something with my stu...

dio and I just was at a loss is where do I go and I actually stumbled into their their their their salon and absolutely fell in love with their design I love everything I wanted I could have decorated my entire house in their space and so I said, hey, girls, you have got to come up to me to my studio and help me with some color tones from my studio I need some help and get that big yeah, they did that came up that afternoon and I said, basically, I just wanted a blueprint, not a literal blueprint, but I need you just to give me some direction. And this is one of the things that I recommend for all of you out there find someone who's got great taste and get them to come in, maybe with ral arrived of fine studios or someone in your community on get them to kind of give you some sort of a blueprint of layout, you don't have to buy everything at once. In fact, I didn't I mean, I took little baby steps, buying a few pieces, but the most important thing I did right away was paint, and I'll tell you a real quick story on what I did when it came to painting. You see, I thought I knew about color. I have should have learned that by now with being with michael and colin that I don't know anything about color. So I said I told the girl says that I wanted to have a great tone in my studio warm gray, so in the meantime, before they gave me my color palette I decided to paint the floor of my studio because I was in a bit of a hurry. So I painted the entire floor of my studio and painted it. This what I thought was a lovely shade of gray. Then I went down to their studio for toe look at all the color palette they had. They had this amazing color tone that you see here. And then I realized that the great that I put on my floor was this ugly blue gray that was going to not work at all. So I had to completely repaint the whole floor in the studio which I could have saved myself about a thousand dollars by doing it the right way. So it taught me a valuable lesson, and that is that of patients. And so afterwards, the girls have been very, very patient with me and giving me some really very, very economical tips on being able to decorate. And I thought that by having them come in today that it could be a guy. Great help all of you out there. So without further due, I love for you girls to show us some of the great ideas you have for photographers on a budget to help them, maybe to soup up their studio or change their look really quickly and affordably. One of the most important tips that you had was doing layering and with layering it's important to pace yourself, because, as you add in each individual layer, you're going to notice how you might want to take one thing back that you haven't really done yet, so it's important to do a couple of things and then step back and see where do I need to fill in? Where do I need to do layering so it works in homes, it works in studios, it works, I'm sure it works in photography so one of the first things that we actually started with, which is very inexpensive to dio, and this might be able to work for one of the issues with let's, say, a studio that you can't do a lot of changing to the physical walls because the architecture is integral and you can't physically change them like they used brick or like materials that you can't quite paint over. If you were to do some stenciling and stenciling can be done on any kind of a backdrop, medium khun certainly be done on paper, you can certainly roll out a craft type paper and paint a stencil that's like this this one we actually got from a company called cutting edge stencils, you can order them online, the stencil itself, it comes in three parts it comes with the main part. They also give you corners and they give you a half section so that you can do wall returns. You khun do different architectural corners, but it goes on with any kind of acrylic paint. We actually used the paint that we used in our studio as a cz this material you really just wanted to be able to show up and read properly. So with this one that we actually just use the basic roller that comes with the kit, it comes with a levelling compound so you can actually do the entire surface this let's say, plexiglass, which we got at an average homestore lows. It was fifty four dollars, and then the stencil itself was about thirty four, so for less than one hundred dollars, not including the cost of paint, but you can use any paint, and I might recommend going into any paint store and seeing what they have extras off. You have no idea how many people return cans of paint because they don't want it because they weren't happy with the color and many companies will offer a money back guarantee if they're not happy with the quality of the paint got five bucks. For the gallant, go to your local paint store and see what you can actually find it's free it's all about retooling and re marketing the things that you confined easily and the things that are going to be readily accessible, even out in the sticks you confined a paint store and with the plexiglass different gauge, like from a quarter and a mean it gets pretty rigid. But if the thinner it is, the cheaper it gets, so you could also just drill little holes in the corner and you could hang it on your wall. So you get a really flat field filled with all the shadows, you know coming through, and it looks like a piece of art hanging on your wall, too. So you can also paint both sides if you wanted to paint the back side so that you could then do let's say, a section of layering across that used brick wall you can put up. I am a blocking materials so that you can actually put this in as a layer so that you can change those materials out there also thin so they can actually step very easily and you can you can store them easily, and they're also very lightweight. One person would be able to lift this so it's not tricky it's not heavy and it's very user friendly as faras the stages that you need to do it it is a little bit of a learning curve just making sure that you get your lines correct but once you actually get it technique down it's very easy to do and be done with lots of different background colors so that you can change it around to get the right aesthetic that you want for yourself you know what I was thinking can you guys are you picturing what I am couldn't you nazi wouldn't look great to shine a light through that plexiglass and then you can create that fabulous pattern on the back side I love that I think that could be that's just another way to see it I like that very much creative minds um by the way is that the standard size that they come in? This is the standard size but there are thousands of different patterns they have on cutting edge denzel's you can choose ones like this that are all over patterns they also have borders they have to chevron I mean pattern everything and it's called cutting edge stencil dot com fabulous and that's the only way send to use the most they have just not the kid ish ones I mean they have a few of those but there's there's more of wall patterns, classics and what I like is that that pattern right there really don't goes nicely with my pillows. I mean, it's kind of harmonious, and that it feels like it belongs here. That's really nice. You won't talk about this now, so this is actually corrugated roofing. Most of this is used for roofing materials outside for people who were doing barnes and lets a small kind of just covered porch areas to a house, each one of the panels wass fourteen, ninety five, fourteen, ninety five and they come in generally two different heights. They'll come in a six foot height, which this one is. It also has a nine foot height, and the panel sizes are about twenty four inches to make it rigid and also to make it more usable. We just use this board material which you actually screw with finishing washers, and just standard screws to go through the material. And that makes it regina for you to have different panel sizes, that you can move around. So if you wanted to do sections of these types of panels, that's another way for you to be able to change the background of your materials. So you see here you can actually see it just has three different sections, so that way screwed everything in so that it's rigid enough, and if you wanted to change them, if you want to paint it, you can also spray painted there's lots of different rustoleum type paints that you can use to get the kind of backdrop that you want. But again, it's not something that is completely within your space. It's also not something you could absolutely bring it with you to another venue. As long as you've got let's, say a vehicle enough to travel, or you can move it out of your studio space and out someplace else. This is where you can again get layering of different texture, and this material wass dollars a dollar on it comes like that it comes it's made it's made for this material, so you find it in the same section as you would your corrugated, citing hold and it comes in. It also comes in clear red to black, like a tented material. Um, you could also find it us like a salvage or go find that already maybe is rusted. If you like that look more, you could leave it outside for a little while. Get your own recipe for free, which we tried, and we did try to go and find the salvage piece because the ones that actually have a natural rest of them have great texture, and we couldn't end up finding something, so we just got the new but again, you could leave it outside. You can sometimes spray it up with a little bit of acetone, and that can sometimes influence and enhance the layering that you'll get with the outside elements because you kind of wanna have that rest in that texture. But if you've got a place to be able to leave it in, the sun absolutely gets in texture that way. But you can paint it there's lots of things that you khun dio and these are actually two panels. It seemed right in here, but you can't really see the seam and that's. The whole point of that re thing is so that it ends up looking like it's seamless, even though there is a marriage in between and that's where it's married together from one panel to the next, do you know this could also make a fantastic bath rock a backdrop? What I love most though is could you imagine hanging a print on this sam thinking that would look awesome as you know is a portable wall in your studio what if you're doing like a show something like a home show where you're showing family portrait or something you could show some really cool high school senior photographs on this? I think in a very, very cool way there's mirror channel that you can also get it most any local hardware store that helps keep that close to the wall you attach the mirror panel to the back of this and then you've got it easily mobile and it stays close to the wall and hugs the wall as quite as closely as possible those come in all kinds of different lengths you control them down but they're meant toe hold different weight so you get whatever weight gauging you're going to need to hold the unit that you're going to get and then from there you can move your background drop around you should be able to drill that into most any surface and then be able to plug up the holes. So should you have a wall that you can't really maneuver too much with let's say you can't paint it it's not a painted wall surface you should still be able to get enough of that weight dispersement into the mirror channel to mount any one of these different items so a mirror channel for those of us that air that air like ignorant like me is that like a little thing that goes on the wall a little due to philology that goes on the wall that just basically holds a mirror up it holds it in place it actually will hold it in place and they'll hold it level so you say the mirror channel comes in linear length or you can actually do different sections of them so you can have one left and one right but if you have let's say at least fourteen to sixteen inches of let's say of wit along something like this you could space it into two different sections and it has let's say a glove on one end and then it has the glove on the other end so you're holding it up from one side and then the mirror channel is attached to this peace and then there's there's that weight that is able teo that goes one on top of the other the thing is is that it holds it very close so it's not like a traditional type of hook that would hold things out from the wall or plain things a particular way I see you can do that if that's if that's what you want but generally with a mirror you wanted to be very perpendicular so that's where this lets it becomes very key but you can get them with different weight requirement so if you wanted to hold thirty five pounds, sixty five pounds, one hundred pounds, they come with different weight options. Well, that's awesome. And just so you don't get frustrated with me when you guys go home, try to do this is that you probably need a puncture. A little hole in the metal before you screw it's. Super easy. We didn't have ah, a little all at the showroom. So we just seriously just took the nail and make her dark and then hammered it and just put a little dimple in it. And then it just screws and with a high heel, right? Yeah. Yeah. But it is. I mean, it's not like something had to get, you know, special drill out and that so you just hammer it really fast, and it was really, really fat, uh, easily. Okay, so let's, move on, girls, and show me some other things. Show me the thing with the pillows. So with the pillows, pillows or one great way for you to change your background and oftentimes you confined different types of pillows, just basics. I mean, they're informs that you could get like, a there are lots of different companies that sell just regular pillow forms and pillow sleeves. So to change out the way that you can layer out all of your coloring and to change out backgrounds this's where you might want to pull out a different area rug and small area rugs khun certainly worked just as well as a large format area around for for mixing in some of the different colors and textures you can completely get a different look once you pull in something simple like an area rug and then balancing it by bringing in different patterns of pillows and uh and sizes, sizes, textures, patterns but you'd be surprised at how easy it is to transform the entire look of your space once you layer in the accent pillows whips paris goes right side up so this is one way to do things right now this is just you know, this is just a very simple um blend with the pillows and the floor is very neutral but once you start layering in the color this rug is actually will so it's a little bit on the expensive side but again you can pick out you can pick out a similar things like this that I kia or one of the things that you just recently purchased was the hide which I think is a um I think that is just a synthetic kind that's something you can also pick up like it's just changing in some of the different color and texture to get the backdrop to read completely differently this is an entirely different space and then it started a poles in the coloring of the central part of these air let's say supplies that we have from our show room so they're already coordinated but it's easy enough for you to mix in each one of the different layers by just adding in a pillow or taking in the pillow if you don't want to see that yellow brought out if that's not part of it say what the shoot is going to be or what you want the actual look to be you can take that out but again you can layer all these different items back in you know, one of the other things that I like about this is that you can also you can change the look of your studio to being a young looking studio something that's young and contemporary versus something that's maybe a little bit older and a little bit sophisticated you know from an older standpoint so I love the ability to be able to do that and you could actually have a couple of different styles of pillows in your studio so that if you had like a young a young couple coming in for an engagement session you really wanted to give that vibe of just a young cool hip group you know, young studio then I think this would be a great way to do it by the way, a consignment shopping is a terrific place to find drugs like this because they have, you know, they have their literally at a quarter of the cost or a tenth of the cost that you might pay in buying a new, expensive rug, and I love the fact that you can bring it in, use it for a little while and take it back as well. So that's great, and the other thing is, you don't need it to be quite large. I'm not sure how large of a format you actually need for doing things, but generally a four by six rug, this one's actually a five by eight, but usually about a four by six rug is big enough for you to get the look that you actually want to be able change things around. You have to be able to fit it for your space and for the aesthetic that you're trying to project with whatever kind of photography you're doing. Okay, let's, do the orange chair thing. You guys are going to die when you see this chair. This child is so looking about this chair, they brought it from my studio last week, and actually it was so powerful I had to show this one to you instead of the one that I was going to show you this chair, by the way. Is not was not orange less than a week ago, I did not have it recovered. Can you tell us about what you did? So this year was your typical, you know, chair in the white, um, canvas like this just wrinkly and had pretty much dirt's things all over it actually did, making it one bit, so if you want a little tidier look, you can clean it up and I just took this spray paint and it's made for fabric. You can get it for leather, you can get it for vinyl and it actually has the exact same feel as a fabric, so don't feel like you put a coat of light paint. It doesn't mean it's later guys can come and feel it, but as you see, I'm painting a there's no crease thing rubs off on you once it's true, it stays on and it's, you literally just spray it on and I had a couple like splotches, but you just take your glove. I put a glove on and you just smear it in and it drives perfectly doesn't show any marks or fingerprints. It drives beautifully actually got rained on last night to part of it and had little raindrops on top, and I just put a little more in a little coat um and I went away love that is my favorite because you know you can always find you know there's like a goodwill you find those chairs and you have to love the way the filigree is but has some horrible horrible pattern on it that is that's an explosion like someone threw up on it what a great thing to have is something like this this paint how expensive is the paint? Eleven fifty can this three cans this did take three can sew a sofa or a larger piece of furniture would possibly take more but this is from the simply spray website so you go to simply spray dot com and you can look up the quality of paint that I want for the item that you're gonna be attaching it to and spray away eventually spread new dot com spray it new dot and this is called simply spray it's confusing otherwise called just you know the other way around but the other thing is that these two are the exact same pillow this is how this one started and then that's that's where it can end up let's see another one of the color's great it's a little bit it's a little tricky when you're trying to get the colors that you want so I might suggest getting some samples of it I believe that they do samples we didn't really have time to actually get some samples was called burnt orange and as you see it's a little brighter san francisco giants or I'll take that one home to my but one easy way to do things and to make an inexpensive I ke a pillow, which this one was about six ninety nine for let's say, for the basic pillow you khun, do some of your own techniques for striping. This is just painter's tape that you can just that you can apply you khun doom, or you could do less you khun do stencils, there's the cutting edge stencils that you can actually use to tape on the surface. You don't want tea, spray the paint on let's say to get the backdrop that you want, and then you can spray in for your own texture and color in your own patterning. When you're doing the stencils, you'll definitely want to roll things the spray as a little bit too much over spray to the outside. You really want to be able to have have the stencil taped on, and you want to be able to roll over it with any kind of a fabric paint. But again, you can pick that up in a craft store, not something that's difficult or hard to find, how I mean, how long does it take to dry? Actually I put a heater on it because last night was pretty cold and probably thirty minutes with the heater on it and then I did the second coat on then just let it sit but it wasn't very long at all ok in this quadrant to be safe yeah in this weather awhile but in summer you know it'll dry quicker okay. So now moving on can you show us you have this big thing on the ground and I know hannah that you love chicken wire andi and you thought I was the on ly one who like things like that okay, I think we should roll up our rug or we should get the lady a I'm seeing feathers on the floor to that makes me a little afraid. Well, it is chicken wire, right? So this again is a different gauging of chicken wire there's all kinds of different gauge ings that you have with chicken wire but this is again something that just ads in layering and texture we actually got the chicken wire for free on dh then we went teo a basic fabric store and just looked around to see what kinds of textures we wanted it's important to find some different weights of the materials and I think that we got anywhere between three and four yards of every fabric so each one of the fabric started out as a regular length let's say that's like this but most fabrics are relatively easy tio to manipulate so we cut them into about twelve where's the size of your chicken wire is going to change around the size of what you want fabric pieces to actually be and we just layered them in, wrap them around the chicken wire and then used a stapler to attach it so again it's not tricky material it's just getting the textures of the materials to work together. But it's one of our one of our favorites was this one which has a really great looking silk on color on one side but then it's got a different color texture on the back side so each one of these was layered in it took us I would say about three to four hours to actually put everything in stand back and then look at the patterning but this is something that you can attach to a wall. This is something you can hang from the ceiling this is something you can lay on the floor but the material starts out of about this size. You can put a small little cut into one side and then you rip a way to get your dimensions on the one end and then you can't to get the size of the piece that you want they can also just the size of the piece ends up being about here you pull from the corner to get the kind of shit that you want if you want more length you can blast it out if you want it to be shorter length to stand up, then you wrap it in a little bit more and then you just staple it to itself. Awesome. Great. Okay, let's, move this out of the way. And lastly, we have something really fun to show you. I mean, forget this would be actually a really a great thing to have. You have, like little kids hanging around your studio. Maybe one of your children could help you this and make them enjoy the experience of being a photographer's child. More theme. Okay, the feel of chicken wire. Uh, it's really easy. You could manipulate any way you want. And once again it's the gage and this one just, you know, just bends so you can create anything that you would like. This is a smaller gauge of chicken wire that we used for this one. This is the only piece that we had of this size, but you can actually cut these into some different shapes. And once we actually got this sprayed and we threw let's say the feathers on it is attached with just a three m spray, which we also got at your local hardware store, so you'll want to have a little back drop around just make sure that you're not getting any adhesive on your own parts. We actually took ours outside, we sprayed very low to make sure that we didn't get a whole lot of the adhesive everywhere, and this is just a basic down pillow form that we bought for my kia for about nine for a bag, and we use maybe like two handfuls, and it covered all of that so you could do a whole wedding gown, and this you could do a whole entire wall in one fellow for sixty nine year adhesive come in different sizes, but this one was, like ten bucks for your spray adhesive. I think one of the most important things is that you're just looking for ways to layer and ways to add texture. People don't need to see that it might be a little bit more crafty from home. You just want to be able to see how those layering of still pictures can actually go. But if you wanted to cut this into wings, you could actually make wings for a little baby for doing a baby picture there's all kinds of different ways that you could make something like this work. Actually, you know what I was thinking? We really cool, actually, if you created, you know, yesterday we created, or on friday, we created that beautiful gown out of the window screening wouldn't be cool to do a gown out of what you do first is you create the the form on the person and then take it off and then spread and then put the feathers on I think that making awesome awesome gown wouldn't that be a fantastic yeah, we could do chicken wire layers you can go online to and if you want different colors and of that you could buy it in bulk. Um but this is just your typical, you know, six, ninety nine for a whole entire, you know, felafel are you know, if you have an old fellow, you can always use that. So all you do is theo wow. And we did a couple of layers of the accuser we put on one layer of feathers and then we shook everything off. It dries very quickly and then another layer of the adhesive and that's what you meant and that's how we got the thicker so obviously this is probably not the time to be wearing black, maybe thiss your life is like the last part we did. Well, we certainly want to say thank you so much, you guys for coming into our studio so if folks want to get a hold of you and have you come and help them decorate their studio, how did they get a hold of you our offices are here at the venetia arsenal were in nine forty six tyler street which is just down from where bambi's offices but you can also take a look at our website which is www dot lorel designs with an s dot com and we also have a facebook page which is lower of design and associates I challenge for my studio it's a fantastic loft space but it is all brick it was built in eighteen ninety and of course the landlord wants nothing changed because you just can't manipulate it that that is the only wall is brick and I love the fact that you kind of given me some ideas of things that I can take in to change that I've just been doing the old put up the backdrops and everything else in and I'm getting tired of that and I know my clients to get I'm tired of it so I want I want something new and funky so yeah you do the same thing with big crews aboard I was even at lowe's and you can buy it's the insulation and it comes in a big foam sheets in the back side of it is aluminum foil it's and you could put the stencil right on that kind of really really tall big sheets for like ten blocks so you know in fact now that she mentions that the little light bulb just went off in my head because we have those insulation pieces that we stuck in the window yesterday and we I was thinking, what can we do to cover up that one side so that it doesn't look awful? Will the stencil is a great idea. I mean, when you have a client for us, when we have clients and we have to block out the light from our, you know, so we can keep it nice and dark movie kind of movie like that's, a terrific answer to that kind of problem and that's, what we do because we have this installation piece is great. Also, if you have the insulation pieces and some of the adhesive spray, we ended up getting some brown kraft paper, which is supposed to be banner paper from a staple store. You could spray the back side of that and then put the brown paper on it so that your texture is going to be different. Good, layer it with the fabric, you could layer it with burlap there's lots of different ways to get just your basic posterboard foam core board and staple some of the burlap material around it. You can find that very inexpensively at a fabric store, and I had a question about painting furniture. Can you paint our darker color like that brown couch colored lighter, and if there's a pattern, will it show through up it will let's say if there is a texture on the fabric like linens and like we said there is a different while the paint that you get for the medium they're putting on so you'll want to know about what clinic quality your fabric is to get the right texture paint so that it here's the right way but absolutely they come in white gray black orange blue they have ah really great shark truc sort of a color but we we thought we wanted a layer and show a few more ways that you can add color versus sticking with the same kind of overall color palette so there's lots of different colors that are available in the website you should take a look at thesis plea spray uh right new spray new dot com great new dot com and then they will have all the different color ways that are available but again it's very simple and very easy to use to shake it up and go yeah it was really easy I was pretty impressed near the questions here so there are a lot of people who are asking about the colors of the walls here in the studio I know it was a custom color that was created what do you think when you are approaching painting a studio? What sort of techniques can can people use to figure out a color for their studio satin finish or glossy or what what type of finnish? They're actually it let's say I wouldn't say that it's a custom color these are basic colors that are on the sherwin williams color palette so we just went into our into our posse of fabric of samples and started to kind of work from there usually there's some kind of an inspiration but for this space we knew that we had to have things flat I guess you don't really want to have as much of a reflective quality with the photography it's what we're understanding every project we learn a little something new as I'm sure you probably do is well but the layering of colors was really just with about two or three different shades we might start out with ten and then we narrow it down it's important to bring the samples into your space and if at all possible do a small test area to see if that's what the actual look that you want to go with or how the colors look together and how they read on walls a great spot to do things is in a corner where if corner is a great spot to be able to transition colors you don't really want a transition a color right in the middle it's great to be able to have something on an inside wall corner so that you can see how a color will wrap and how the light will catch it a little bit differently so you know some of the spots where we actually transitioned the color was so that we can hide some of the different architectural funkiness that we have to the building so those air some basic ways to get started but you want to get started with something if it was this pillow you might want to be in this kind of family of color does that mean you want to be in the wheat or do you want to be in the gold? How do you want those colors to blend with each other so it's usually the most important way to start is with something that inspires you which could be a picture it could be a fabric it could be anything and for me I knew that I wanted something that was warm and I knew I wanted a neutral palette so when I came to their studio originally they showed me a pillow in fact the pillows that we had on the couch originally on dh they said baby do you like these tones and I went oh yes and then they literally took the big paint chips this is exactly the palette that we used is this kind thing she says, well, this kind of a tone would look great in your studio as an accent color then this is a medium term and then they pulled one other color color that was a darker tone for our wall so so you can even grab if you like. If you have certain colors that you know you want in a piece of in a pillow that's a great way to do it because you can carry it anywhere you want and check it out on different furniture and to see if it's going to go if it all alive, it flows. What important tip is that you do want to have a pillow that has multi color, so that when you're pulling things in, you look a lot more coordinated as an individual when you have this color that pulled out in your well somewhere, or if you have the gold or the shark truth it's picking something that has multi layers of color, so it looks coordinated with you not even having to think about it. You find the inspiration and it does the work for you. Excellent, because so many of us photographers and people online who are are not designers are loving hearing this tips for bid. So one more question is for people who aren't necessarily don't know where to look for people like you two to collaborate with in their local areas, what would you recommend for places to find people? There's so much that's available on the web these days companies that are out there like house or companies like pinterest, there's, lots of different websites where you can go for your basic inspiration. They have keyword sections where you can input whatever it is you want, it could be small bathroom, it could be brown tones. Thousands and thousands of images will actually come up and find one that inspires you that's the most basic and easy way to start it's also free and in fact, that website house it's h o u z z they have made me a junkie. I love that I love that website. I bet you I'm on that website once at least once a week and they just literally thousands and thousands and thousands of ideas when answers people are into designers who posted their pictures and so there's millions and millions so it's kind of where you just go and we look for their translation too. So it's going to it's going to be able to have something that you can draw from that will show the actual look of exactly what you want and you might pick out one or two different things from an image that you like and layer it with one or two images from another texture that you like so it's combining all of those different things together one important thing, though, is that on the house website, you can actually import your own pictures and asked designers for help.
