Button Layout: Other Sides
Move around to the left side of the camera, it's this where we're going to see our depth of field preview button that's that little unlabeled button over on the left hand side of the camera, and when you look through your camera, you are looking through your camera with the aperture wide open, and so things will be as shallow depth of field as they can be. And if you want to see what it's gonna look like at the aperture you have chosen, what you will do is that you will press down on that button, and it stops the aperture down, and it shows you the depth of field that you're going to get. Now, this used to be a big time professional feature on cameras who it's got depth of field preview it's a fancy camera, but the fact is, is that on modern cameras, you can just shoot a picture and look at the picture and see if it's got the depth of field you want. However, it is still a handy feature to have under bright light conditions where you can't see the viewfinder really well. So it's a good...
tool if you're looking to shoot maximum depth of field, and you want to see how much depth of field their ass all right, as we open up those little rubber doors on the side of the camera, you'll see that there's a bunch of ports in there and first off we have a microphone import. So if you want to add a microphone, which I would highly recommend if you want to shoot good quality videos, uh there's a number of different good microphones out there the sign heizer nk four hundred is a nice little microphone sells for about two hundred bucks road makes a really nice microphone for around two hundred thirty dollars, and one of the things that you can get is what's called a wind muff or a dead cat to put on the front of the mike to help muffle the wind noise that would normally be heard by it. And so that will help improve the audio quality of your video. And if you really do want to get into video, a lot of people will pick up something like a zoom h two in external video audio recorder, and then they will match up the video with the audio later on. Next up, right above that is our remote shutter release uses a type in three, which is a cannon type remote cannon makes two different types of remote if you're shooting basic shots and you just want to fire the shutter release. The r s eighty in three will do the job sells for about fifty bucks if you would like a little bit more control they make a much fancier version of the same thing the tc eighty in three and this was going to give you some nice options for instance, if ten seconds is not a long enough self timer you could set a much longer time for this. One of the coolest things with this is the interval ometer you can set the camera to shoot a picture every five or ten seconds or every hour and then you can take all those pictures and you can combine them into a video with an editing program and so that's one of the main reasons why I use the larger remote hears to get that interval ometer feature but if you want to set the camera for a sixty second or a two minute exposure you could do that as well and so that was going to sell for around a hundred fifty dollars up above that is thie pc sink this is where you're gonna hook your camera up to external strobes so if you're working in a studio you might be plugging in a device here or potentially a wireless remote as well on the right hand side are you on the right hand side of this we have r a v out so there's a little mini a v jack here there's that's gonna plug in with the cords that came with the camera so that you can hook up to a standard tv the usb out is how you could download directly from the camera personally I recommend using a card reader but you can do it directly through the camera if necessary and it does have an hdmi port as well so if you want to hook it up and you do a playback of a movie or slide show on a tv on an hdtv you could do that you can also hook it up live so you can see through what your camera's pointed out and so you could basically have as a live camera and feeding it to an hdtv as we work around over to the right hand side of the camera that's where the memory card goes in uses a compact flash memory card fat thirty two compliant and so obviously when you look at memory cards you're gonna be looking at how much capacity it has the size of the memory card and so the storage capacity is going to be the first thing obviously bigger card more pictures to get thie other thing you want to look at is how fast the car it is because how fast the car it is is necessary if you're gonna be shooting a lot of movies you you're gonna be shooting movies you want to get a card that is you d m a compliant it'll actually say you dmh on it the fastest cards or udm a seven cards out you don't need those in this camera but they do write a little bit faster in camera but probably where you'll notice it most is they download faster and so not everyone needs superfast cards if you're shooting sports the camera is not the greatest cameron the world for shooting sports it only shoots at four frames a second but the camera will process images a little bit faster and storm to the card the faster the card is so you get about thirty six raw images per gigabyte you could just multiply that out I'm never gigs that you're getting on your card as I said before I don't much like downloading from the camera and so I like getting an external card reader and so there's a couple of good card readers out of the market lexar and sand is two of the biggest manufacturers of compact flash cards are going to be the best ways to go there's a variety of others but I think it's kind of worth the extra ten bucks to get a decent card reader for downloading images it's much faster than using the camera down at the bottom of the camera we have the hidden secret battery that a lot of people don't know about that is in this camera there is a little time and date battery that is in the camera and uh requires just a little funding to knock that out of there. It's probably gonna last about five years. But if you have problems with the time and date not being set properly after many years of use, you might need to replace this battery, which is just a cheap little three dollars. Watch back. We have an extension terminal down there which is going to allow us to hook up ah, wireless transmitter. If we wanted to wirelessly transmit images from our camera to a nearby computer, you would need this little transmitter, which sells for about five hundred fifty bucks on dh, you'll see these in use most notable place that icy, um, is at the olympics. By the long job, vail mountain photographers will mount cameras right by the sand landing pit of the long jump. You'll have this whole role of cameras, and they'll be a whole bunch of photographers on the other side of the stands, taking pictures with their computer and then uploading them to the nearby are to their local server for use on there on the ap wire or something like that. We can also hook up a vertical battery grip. This is very good for people who shoot a lot of portrait and a lot of sports or anyone who shoots a lot of verticals. Because the camera is a little bit more comfortable, hold with a vertical grip on it because it has that vertical shutter release on it. This also allows you to put two batteries in the camera so that you have to change batteries less frequently and is generally good for people with really big hands just gives you more to grip onto the camera, and that does come with a double a battery insert so you can use double a batteries if, for some reason you had a hard time charging the traditional batteries that we use in this camera, just using those standard double a batteries, kind of nice emergency backup in some situations, other little things on the camera, standard tripod socket, so it's going to hook up with all the standard tripods and out there, you'll have your serial numbers, you can record that for insurance purposes. The battery compartment uses the lp six cannon battery we talked before about non cannon products. You'll find that the cannon batteries, they're going to give you generally the best life span on him. They also have a special computer chip in there that communicates with the camera that records, how many shots you've taken on that particular battery, and how good the overall charging performance of that camera, the x, the aftermarket batteries sometimes have that, and sometimes they don't the lc sixes, the standard battery charger that comes with the camera we took a look at that earlier, and then there is a car charger as well, so if you're going to be working out of your car, you can use this, but a nice little cheap alternate choice is to get a lost the name of it and it's a interred thinking interval ometer. But I'm wrong on that it's an inverter justin inverter, and it basically plugs into your car's cigarette adapter and you would plug in your standard battery charger into that charter. If you are working maybe in a studio or at a scientific iranian where arena where you need to have constant power to the camera all the time, you could get the adapter and that's going to give you a constant supply of power so you don't have to worry about battery's running out for a particular type of like really extended time lapse shot working our way around to the front of the camera. We have our remote sensors, so if you get that little wireless remote from canon that's, what you are pointing it towards below that is our self timer lamps, so that when we set the self timer that's goingto blink red at us as we count down that time, either from ten to two seconds now this camera can use different focusing screens in there and there's a little clip in there where you can take out the focusing screen in the camera and you can replace it. It comes with the standard screen, but some people prefer a grid screen and you could replace it with the grid screen itself around thirty to forty dollars, there is also a super precision mats screen for somebody who likes to manually focus, so if you're going to shoot video and you're going to get all these manual focus lenses, you could replace the screen so it's a little bit easier to see for manual focusing we, of course has are mere in there and that's the reflex portion of single lens reflex. We have our contacts which connect up with the lens and we have our depth of field preview button that we've already talked about. Then of course, our lens released for taking the lens on and off we have our little microphone right there in the front of the camera, so when you're looking at the camera recording video that's the microphone that's being picked up it is not steri its monaural and sound. What better quality sound used that plug in mike on the side? This camera takes e f lenses it does not take f s lens is designed for the old thirty forty fifty we'll talk a little bit about this actually, in the next slide. So it's going to take all the standard f lenses that are out there, which uses the red dot on them.

Amazing class, I walk away feeling like I've made this machine my own. Like getting a new car and adjusting all the seating and mirrors and radio stations to your comfort, then giving it a name because its officially yours. My camera now feels more comfortable to use and I can't wait to use it again with these new found tweaks. Thanks John, always a great class!

Having used an XTi I was familiar with the basic Canon layout, but when I bought my 5D MKii used from my wedding photographer who updated to the MKiii, I knew there would be a ton of features I'd never really understood. This video series is fantastic. I've learned so much about my camera, many tips on best practices when planning shots and I've seen an increase in the quality of all my photos as a whole vs. just taking a ton of pics to try and capture one or two that turn out nice. I'm excited to try out so many new things I learned from watching these videos. I'd recommend these videos be the required guide to anyone who owns a 5D MKii.

Excellent instruction. The instructor is very knowledgeable and a very effective communicator. Great photo examples and "SLIDES for that". Creative Live and John should both be commended for providing in depth and pertinent information. The Canon 5D MkII is a great camera however without a body of knowledge to fully utilize it you might as well have a low end point and shoot. I would recommend this class to anyone who has a 5D MkII, no matter your skill level. Great job!
