Lenses
Lots of different lenses from canon and there's a lot of different designations so I want to de mystify some of this alphabet soup that goes with all the letters on the lens, so to start with the lens is that cannon makes they call him eat f lenses elektronik focus that was a big thing twenty years ago elektronik focus and so that's what e f s l stands for a luxury which means it's a high end professional ends and that's something you're going typically see with a red stripe around it with longer telephoto lenses the lenses will be white so that they reflect heat when you're outside shooting sports with him for instance, I s stands for image stabilizer lot of lenses have that these days. Ah, what you're seeing a lot of second generation lenses come around and so in eighty seven they started coming out with autofocus lenses. They brought out a lot of lenses in the nineties and now they've figured out ways to make better quality optics, better quality focusing systems and they're replaci...
ng those lenses so we'll see a lot of second generation lenses out there in the development of the auto focus lens is one of the big changes that they had is they added ultrasonic motors, which is basically that's fast and quiet focusing is what it is and pretty much all the lenses these days are usm ultrasonic motor lenses but it is something that you'll see not on some of the older lenses e f s lenses are the lenses that you can't use on this camera. In fact, they wont even fit on the camera, so don't even worry about mounting them on because they don't fit on and this stands for short back focus and this is for the smaller framed cameras like the sixty d fifty d the rebel siri's and so forth. Also on some of the lenses depends on the lens you might have a focusing limiter you'll see this on telephoto lenses often and this limits the range that the lens will focus and the reason that you might use this is that if you are shooting sports generally the athletes are somewhat far away from you there not three feet in front of you and so you can limit the lens to focus safe from ten feet to infinity and in that case the lens. If it's searching for focus will never never search closer than ten feet, which is a nice option for it to just pick up speed a little bit, it narrows down the search ng range. Normally I would leave it on the full range all the cannon lenses will have an auto focus and manual focus switch on the side of it except for a few special exceptions that air manual focus lens is only many of the lenses, as I said, we'll have a stabilizer switch on and off. Some of them also have a mode one and mode to, and what that means is mode one is normal for general handheld photography mode two, as if you were panning with subject. Now, the cameras can actually detect if you are horizontal format or vertical format, so it's changes the way the camera's stabilizer is working. And so what it's doing when you're panning is that you want tohave one access correcting for movements, but you don't want this access move because your penny with the subject and the camera might be kind of trying to counterbalance what you're doing if you leave it in mode one, so mode two for pani and on some lenses, you're going to see this tiny little red dot it's not on all the lenses, but its tip looking, typically going to be on the el lenses in the hiring lenses, and that is the infrared and the index. If you're shooting infrared style photographs with an infrared filter, you need to focus in a slightly different area, because infrared light focus is in a different way than standard light, so now we're gonna get to a few recommended lenses there's, obviously lots of lenses out there, but just let me introduce you to some of the core lenses that you might be interested in on this camera first off is the holy trinity of zoom lenses with with the cannon system, and that is their two eight zooms there l zoom's the sixteen to thirty five they're brand new twenty four to seventy and they're pretty new seventy two, two hundred lens these lenses are very commonly used on the five demark too. They match up very well as faras quality. I like having a good quality lens on a good quality camera and they're great lenses. You're going to get very good results from these now. They also have kind of junior lenses behind those. They're still l lenses, so they're still really high quality lenses, the seventeen to forty, the twenty four to one of five and the seventy two, two hundred f or these are all really good lenses. They have an aperture of f four rather than to eight. And for some people who do say travel, photography and landscape photography where they're toting their cameras around a lot, these might be really good choices now beyond these I highly recommend if you own a five d mark too, you should own one of these lances, these air, these air just a few of the prime lenses that are very, very useful, it depends on the type of photography you're doing, but this is just kind of one of those lenses that matches up really well with the camera, so a couple of wide angles have a twenty for one for which is actually what I have on the camera out here that I'm using right now. Ah, thirty five one four is a great lands the fifty one two standard lands and then short telephoto is eighty five on one thirty five it's just really nice to have a good fast lens on the camera for a variety of reasons. Not everyone needs these, but for many people would be nice to own one really nice prime lands. And any one of these five is going to be a fantastic lands that you would really be happy to have. All right, how about some people on a budget? They spend all their money on the camera, they don't have much on lenses. Uh, so here, here, three choices for really good non l lenses. And so these are the outside of the l can't just introduced a couple of white angles, twenty for twenty eighth ese ayer image stabilized their non l, but they look to be really good lenses. They're still quite new at this time and just moving away from canada for the moment tamron introduced a twenty four to seventy that has tested out to be very good in sharpest and what's unique about it is that unlike the cannon twenty four to seventy this one has vibration control on it they call it a vc lands and so if you want stabilized in a standard fast zoom this is the on ly one available on the market out there and so it looks to be a good, good let's and I'm going to give you five more lenses here and these I consider the best bang for the buck and these lenses are all less than six hundred fifty bucks, which is darn right cheap in this realm of photography and so candid makes a twenty eight one eight a nice little wide angle. The fifty one four is a good popular basic lands the eighty five one eight is a great portrait lens you need a little bit of room to work with so hard to shoot with in a studio in that one, one hundred macro they do have a new hundred macro that is even better than this one but this one is so affordably priced it's very good for a lot of people and then the least expensive l'll ends in the whole bunch is thie older seventy two, two hundred f or the on ly disadvantage on this lands is it is not image stabilized but for a lot of people, it's, not a big deal because they're shooting sports. They need a fashion or speed to stop the action of the subject, and that's going to stop the motion of them holding the lens on the camera. And so, if you're doing travel or sports or nature, the seventy two, two hundred is a fantastic by on the scammers. They're really sharp lens and it's. Not very much money, it's, only six hundred and forty bucks. And so, I think, that's a great deal for lance.

Amazing class, I walk away feeling like I've made this machine my own. Like getting a new car and adjusting all the seating and mirrors and radio stations to your comfort, then giving it a name because its officially yours. My camera now feels more comfortable to use and I can't wait to use it again with these new found tweaks. Thanks John, always a great class!

Having used an XTi I was familiar with the basic Canon layout, but when I bought my 5D MKii used from my wedding photographer who updated to the MKiii, I knew there would be a ton of features I'd never really understood. This video series is fantastic. I've learned so much about my camera, many tips on best practices when planning shots and I've seen an increase in the quality of all my photos as a whole vs. just taking a ton of pics to try and capture one or two that turn out nice. I'm excited to try out so many new things I learned from watching these videos. I'd recommend these videos be the required guide to anyone who owns a 5D MKii.

Excellent instruction. The instructor is very knowledgeable and a very effective communicator. Great photo examples and "SLIDES for that". Creative Live and John should both be commended for providing in depth and pertinent information. The Canon 5D MkII is a great camera however without a body of knowledge to fully utilize it you might as well have a low end point and shoot. I would recommend this class to anyone who has a 5D MkII, no matter your skill level. Great job!
