Edit Page: Basic Workflow
Let's take a look at the basic workflow for working inside of the edit page. Generally, when you start a project in the edit page you'll either have some media imported possibly from the media page, or you might just need to import media here into the edit page. Either way, you can always right click in the blank space of the media pool and select import media and navigate to wherever your media is and bring it in. Once you have your media in, you have to make a timeline. If there's nothing down here, you can just start dragging media in and it'll make a new timeline for you. Or you can right click in the empty space and go to timelines, create new timeline. Now we'll ask you what to call it. So we'll call it my edit and hit create. And now we have this blank timeline down here. Then generally what you do is you go through your media. Usually just double clicking here in the media pool to load it up in the source viewer. And you can select what part you want to use by setting an in or ...
an out. So I can hit I for in. That's going to set the start of the clip that I'm gonna be bringing into the timeline. And I can hit O on the keyboard for out. And so now we have this little selection highlighted here and that means that we're just using this part of the clip and I can grab this and drag that down in into the timeline. So now we have stuff showing up here in the upper right hand viewer, the timeline viewer. And if we hit space bar on the keyboard, we can play this back. And pretty much how this works is you go through and you find whatever media you want and drag that down into your timeline to create your story. And there are a few different ways that we can get things into the timeline. Some of those are a little bit fancy that we'll talk about in a second. But that's pretty much what you do is you build your audio, you build your video and you place those all in the timeline to be exactly how you want. I'll bring up a timeline I've already worked on here. And if you want to adjust something specific about a clip, you select the clip and bring it up in the inspector and you can adjust things like zooming in, the position, rotation, all that fancy stuff. You can even crop it. And there are a ton of different controls that you have for every single clip in the timeline. But you work down here and get your edit feeling the way that you want. Once you have your edit feeling really good, you might wanna bring it into the color page to start doing color correction or the fair light page to start doing audio mixing. But again, you don't have to do that. You can just stay in the edit page and if everything looks and sounds good to you, you can go up to file and select quick export and pick one of these presets to render out your movie. That'll let you save everything that you've made out as a rendered file that you can upload to YouTube or you can give to somebody on a thumb drive and other people can see it and they don't have to open up your project and resolve.

I'm glad to see the DaVinci Resolve courses have been added to Creative Live. Casey Faris does a great job with his teaching. In this course he clearly explains the layout of each page and shares example workflows for each. It's really good as an intro to Resolve.

Helpful class if you are interested in DaVinci Resolve. Casey Faris presents the information clearly and doesn't waste time. Looking forward to his Color Correction and Fusion classes.
