Shoot: Painting with Light
We're going to paint with light because that's what I said I did with those seniors um and why not? Everybody else would think okay paint with light that's just for fun but it could be for your business too if you approach it the right way for creating a buzz so where does goingto play? Yeah definitely okay guys let's head over there and we're making this a group effort hey hi. Oh no thank you hi. All right and I'm shooting tethered good all right, so I'm going to talk you guys through how many of you guys have done paint with light before? Okay got a good nose that's good. How about you, genevieve? And people like sick new I don't do that. Ok, eso what a couple of things that you want to do first is you want to get your focus while the lights on and flip your camera to manual because otherwise when the lights go off it's constantly searching for focus so I'll set that uh the next thing that you want to do is you want to set your camera on manual or bulb if you have a trigger release, ...
you can set your camera bulb and then however long you hold down that trigger, you lock it in that's how long your exposure is so I've done paint with light that's been um I did one painting like that was twenty minutes so you can you can definitely dio that was actually a landscape that I am I took flash and car lights and I limited the side of a mountain um efren twenty minutes but in this case what we're going to do instead is going to set up cameras on manual or else that mine and we can show these images their group created images you said it to thirty seconds at s o eight hundred um and thirty seconds that'll give us time to do a little bit I might start off a little shorter first to get the exposure on her face right um and I used to start a hundred and then like I don't know f ate like I just guess there is absolutely positively no right answer what's fun about this is I guarantee you'll see me screw up like we're just we're playing around here um and so I get that right and I don't have any super crazy tool we're just going to keep it kind of simple I had a little flashlight over here but I gave you okay so this is a little I think it's think it's a little canon flashlights they give away the free flashlight so next time you're at one of those conferences or one of those workshop things that get one of their flashlights um and then I bought I don't know I bought these at a store in their little light so you can spin him if you wanted to I also have some gels but I kept it simple and then for you rivers out there some rio yeah so for the crazy raver zagat so who wants to be a raver right now and the river you're gonna be a river what do you have here way see your lights she's got more lights oh, I like this little mag late too scotch ok, height weight e have my hands full you can if you want you take a look at it. All right let's see what do these do just you push him and they do things whoa okay these air fun alright this's fun okay, cool how fast the sea I'm gonna take your little light all right, so I need the house lights down, please and I'm going to first get the light on her face cracked and then I'm gonna have you guys just make pretty patterns for fun on dh I have done if you check on my website if you search in my block there's an editorial called I think it was late dancer or something like that or swing around paint with light and it was a really cool editorial that was painted with light this's just for fun hi alright, so I'm gonna come over there and give a test the key for painting with light is when you paint on the individual um you're gonna paint their face first and you on ly one across over their face once if you go over their body more than once and they move then it's creative blurred then you get ghosting so if I go over the face and that's why you also try to go over there I just once because if they move that's a blurry image um so ideally you're in a blackout room this is not a blackout room so we'll see how dark it stays when I shoot at six seconds we're gonna see if this will work and here we go I'm gonna have you come click just click over here from the side all right? I have no idea of my effort right now so tell me when you cook okay let's take a look good. Okay, very bright but still kind of cool so roughly all right, so that's a little oh, and wonder how much is ambient we'll see um so I'm gonna shut down teo f fourteen and we'll see and I'll be out to see if this is ambien again. So have you click which that's pretty too is something just if I bring this up again something that you could dio is you could paint with light doing the same thing was like the model leaning this way and then have her move in and paint her again that way so she's like kind of a ghost coming out of her own body or something kind of like that so let me dio uh f sixteen and let's do it ten seconds I'm gonna have you do that lean one way than the other so firstly in this way ok tell me when robin okay queen okay, well I was fast I'm fast ok? You put your hand over the lens if let's see how much you think she looks very awesome so okay you know, matter of like how practical it is it's just for fun like it's it's totally dissed refund um you look nice and creepy really good. Very cool. Okay, so there definitely is a lot of ambient recording so guys out there and in the internet audience you would want to black this out way more because it gives you more time if there's ambient light show how come you're not showing up in I'm moving so if so if you see if I shoot and she stands still you will absolutely see her but I'm moving on and I'm dressed all in black onda had dark hair so it wouldn't record too much all right? So I'm gonna have yes I'm going to have you guys go create some background let me do one more trick painted on her I'm going to grab some jealousies or just the regular jobs that you can use on your backgrounds on dh this is kind of what we did for julie's uh letting set up we had blue john the background so I'm going to use some blue and I'm going to close down just a little bit more see I'm still alright let's do that okay give myself ten seconds I would have you click again and I there's a lot of cool things you wanted to you guys so I'll just do a couple of techniques real quick all right let me turn this on on already god charity don't move okay and then we'll go oh it's gonna be too dark right for this weight's too bright in here ok I try that again like you couldn't even see that light on my hand yeah okay so because of darkness I do like that like kind of creepy on her face but let's try this I'm going to use a more powerful light for the second part of this okay that will laid up with background okay here we go that and I was gonna blow the whistle right I was still kind of cool though okay so who wants to be in charge of lighting for the background blue or relating her dress blue okay do you have any other flashlight okay like you ever have you ever done anything like crazy cool with their legs for so if you check out this editorial thing I have is the crazy awesome stuff that is interesting so okay so I'm gonna have you do a cool pose uh I'm gonna have you look like like look like you're kind of running something like this okay something that you can hold still though whatever you can actually hold still for ten seconds okay, okay. All right, so I'm gonna have you okay what do you want to give a click you're gonna like the background I'm gonna let her already hey, wait wait a little more light on her face. Okay that's good though tells me, um do more swaths so maybe don't do this close maybe do it like instead of here do something a little further back um another really weird random thing this will work check this out. Okay, this is weird. I would have you liked her face ok, ok, another force in it you could do for painting light if you write your own hand so I'm gonna give her trails of going out for like trails of wind coming off her back. Okay, so yes so you're just going to go slow ish sin really close and the key is you don't want to point back so the camera sees it you have to say it's slightly at this angle so really close like probably like here okay okay I'm gonna try to give her trails of wind off her back and tell me when go okay trying to give her wings oh yeah okay so this like I'll do a lot it looks like I had those hands scooping out of her back that's something no next one okay um the key is though there's too much ambien in this room so I'm going to light her whole thing right ready guys wish me luck I'm going to do all of this all at once here we go ready d'oh yep all right I'm gonna run like a mad woman and you'll all appreciate this a lot so here we go I'm gonna light a facial tic here we go ready wait it was my running okay, so for the last shot I'm giving everybody toy to play with so if you have more time if you can shoot this on thirty seconds instead of having just a few trails off the back you can make tons and I could have multiple you know? So that's what I think I'll have you do I'm gonna have you do hands behind her and who was gonna have you yes so give two to two hands so one person can do the hands behind her yet but I'm on and just like wiggle your fingers something do you think you're gonna you're gonna give her the trails on the back give her last trails okay. All right, sixteen good, good let's cut it down from twenty seconds to fifteen, okay, without two of stuff he wants oh, that's great. You can do blue behind you two. All right? So I'm going to like her. All right? So that's gonna be our last one? Yeah. Okay. Last one there we go. So you were going tio that won't like that. I have to come around the background with her, so maybe you can, like take turns give her just give her lots of stuff coming off. Ok, ready you on that side, go over there making from off of her so she's going to do it? You can so just make crazy lines okay? Ready yet? No, the hand looks crazy eyes you know, you don't wanna fire like like white. Yes. If you do this, you want where you wanna wear all black. So if you have more time in a dark room I later face like that. I lit it from an angle because it everything from what we learned for photography still applied by later from the front it's going to be flat feel lighter from the side it's going to be dramatic can carve out the shape of her body so shoot in a dark room, get some of these crazy lights, create trail's shapes around the faith. I just did as value added for my clients, and you should have seen what they said on facebook. It was awesome. So definitely try that.

I have watched at least half a dozen Creative Live courses and this was definitely one of the most interesting and informative of them. Lindsay showed her wealth of knowledge in lighting, posing, post processing and marketing. I was truly impressed with her level of comfort in each field. She tackled different situations and questions with ease. I really liked the course layout as well. She shot her own themed shoots and explained them. Then she helped each student with their own very different styled shoots. It looked like a lot of fun and a great way to learn too. Then at the end Lindsay had a fun little light painting session. WELL DONE LINDSAY AND CREATIVE LIVE!!! ;-)

I'm an artist and amateur photographer who has long been interested in the subject of fashion photography and how to incorporate it into my art. Lindsay impressed me with her depth of knowledge and her comprehensive and selfless method of presentation. Showing before and afters to illustrate technical differences was particularly helpful to me, as was seeing her explain the importance of concept and story. Posing, glowing skin, and lens flare techniques were also a treat to witness and learn from her. Her passion for the subject is tangible, and left me more excited about the potential for my own work. The sheer volume of information Lindsay shares in this workshop is tremendous, from idea to the shoot to post-production, and certainly worth the investment I made in my career. Thanks to Lindsay and thanks to Creative Live.
