Shoot: Capture Authentic Children Images
Okay, Ryatt is extremely young. He's not even three yet, okay? It's gonna be a little bit spray and pray. Okay do you know what I mean by that? 'Cause he's not negotiable. Okay? He's not some child I can rationalize with, okay? So he's a little young for this but I still wanna photograph him because he's adorable and he's Chelsea's son, who works here at CreativeLive, and he's ridiculously cute and he brought his dinosaur costume. So we're gonna go for him but this is gonna be a whole different animal because it's going to be willy nilly. It's gonna be a little bit all over the place. Belinda's gonna be picking him up and bringing him back, a lot like a one year old or an 18 month shoot where we're just picking him up and putting him back. Picking him up, putting him back. Okay? 'Cause they have to be in the perfect position. So I'm gonna move this light in a little bit closer, perfect, beautiful. We're gonna stay, that's fine. We're gonna move into the gray. But my sweet spot is liter...
ally for him, right about here, okay? So I'm gonna want him in this spot. What I will do at home is I'll tape a piece of blue tape or painters tape, I don't do it too often but sometimes with kids like this I'll tape a piece of blue tape and say stand on the tape and make sure you don't leave the tape, the tape's the special spot, anything else is hot lava, don't step on the lava. You know or make a little circle and then you can always post, take it out post or whatever if you have too. So use that as the last resort if you need too. Okay? Kids will not step on hot lava. Especially boys. They will not step on hot lava. So if you tell them everything else but the spot is hot lava, they will stay there, it's brilliant, it works great, okay? Alright let's take mister Ryatt here. You can see just by looking at that image of Lily with the side light how much more even it is and of course then we didn't have time. Hi mister Ryatt. Hi buddy! He might take a little more convincing. Hi buddy, what's up! How are you! Whatcha doin'? Can you give me five? I hear you may have brought some special friends. Did you bring some special friends? Who's those special friends? And your sunglasses! Let's wear the sunglasses. Shall we? Okay. So B, I'm gonna have you turn on the fan. And come on over here bud. Oh my goodness he knows the drill, he knows how to get it done. Come on over here peanut. Can you stand right here? See that little fuzzy hair right there? Look at that, he's such a trooper. Look at that fan's gonna blow your hair. Is it gonna blow your hair? It's not really blowing it very hard, is it? There we go. See at my studio I have a huge industrial fan that literally blows the snot out of them and they love it. And it makes their hair all crazy and fun. Yeah is that fun? (mumbles) Let's see your big cool sunglasses, huh! Oh my goodness can you try on those sunglasses for me? Are they awesome sauce? Oh yeah, my cool dude. Yeah. You're my rockin' sauce cool dude, huh? Oh look at you fancy man. Yeah? What do you think? Are those your favorite? Huh? Where's your dinosaur? Where's brontosaurus? I'll get him. Let's bring mister dino. (vocalizing) Here he is. Yeah, who is that? What's his name? Yeah? Who? His dinosaur brontosaurus? Is that mister brontosaurus? Oh yeah! (camera clicking) Oh my gosh. Ridiculous. What do you think? I wish that fan would go stronger. Does it go stronger? Can you bring it closer to him? That's as strong as it goes (mumbling) Bring it nice and close to him. Little bit more. Just get it nice and, I literally want his bangs standing up on end if we can. Yeah it's just not gonna blow 'em. A little higher up. A little tilt, there we go. Perfect! The man! How big are you? Are you so big? Can you give me touch down? So big! How big is Ryatt? So big! Yeah? Where's that scarf? Wanna put the scarf on him. Do you like to wear your scarf? Yeah? Is it fun? Okay. Let's put the scarf on. Do you know how to jump like a frog? Huh? Is that your scarf? Yeah? You know how to jump like a frog? Jump! Can you do that? Yeah, jump! Let's jump like a froggy. You jump like a froggy. Can you do it for me? Jump like a froggy! Jump like a froggy! One more time, big jumps! Big jumps! Good job buddy! Where'd brontosaurus go? Yeah? (chuckling) Oh my gosh. Oh my gosh it's ridiculous. (laughing) Get those sunglasses on. Make sure they don't fall off. What do you think? Brontosaurus is hiding behind you! Where'd he go? Oh my goodness. Where'd he go? Is he hiding? There he is! (laughing) Crazy town! Make sure, oh yeah good job buddy. Don't move. Don't move. Oh we gotta get you back here by mister brontosaurus. See how he's leaving the light? Come on back here, let's go back here. Perfect. You gotta babysit mister brontosaurus, make sure that he doesn't go anywhere. Okay? (camera beeping) (mumbling) Who's that? Who's that! Yeah who's that! Boo. Boo. (laughing) What do you think? (camera beeping) Nice! You're my stud man, huh. Oh my gosh, okay. You can literally shoot this for days. You're so cute buddy. Okay, awesome peanut. Can you play peek a boo? Peek a boo! Peek a boo! Peek a boo! Peek a boo! Oh my goodness peek a boo! Boo. Peek a boo! Peek a boo, Yeah, perfect. Okay good job buddy. You know he did bring his little dinosaur costume. He could easily throw that on for a second look. He's doing so great with this that I'm like okay I wanna shoot more! You're like this is amazing, I wanna shoot more. Change. Move on. Get that variety for the client, okay? He's gonna keep that energy flying and we got some just darling images of him. I'll move the light so that you guys can actually see here in the studio audience. Just some fun, look at that toe going up like that. I mean kids just like that, look at that. Oh my gosh. Yeah. The sunglasses? Dude, the Ray-bans, you gotta love it. Parents freak over this, okay? Obviously he was, you were so good, you did so awesome buddy. Thank you Chelsea for letting us have him. Did you see yourself over there? Look at you cute boy. He's like little spotlight lover. I love it. Is that you? Is that you buddy? Please tell me somebody's getting this on video. (laughing) So awesome. I mean literally almost every frame is fun because he was able to be himself and he is stealin' the spotlight here. Oh my gosh I love him, what a great way to end. Anyway, any other questions or comments, you can see how parents, I mean these sunglasses he's been wearing everyday right now, that's what she says. So it's that sentimental thing that's really gonna make the point driven home to your clients.

I own I think all of Julia's classes. This is probably my favorite. I will say that it's because its exactly the type of photography I have been wanting to focus on. So the information was extremely valuable to me. But I do love all of Julia's classes and you can learn so much from her as a mentor regardless of the type of portraits you shoot. Thanks Julia for a wonderful class I have watched it multiple times!

As always, Julia never disappoints! It has been so awesome to watch her work with such incredible intention, from concept to session to sales. Her energy and strategy are so motivational and very, very creative! This class rocks from start to finish, and is a perfect addition to my Creative Live business arsenal! Five stars all the way!!!!!

My favorite part was seeing how Julia's business evolved over time and transformed into what it is today. Good tips for finding inspiration to develop a niche and practical marketing advice. I'm glad I took this alongside Tamara's business class - the two photographers had very different approaches to their business and shooting family photography in many ways, but it really illustrators how there's no one way to do everything. I learned so much from both of them.
