Shoot: Modern Family on Seamless
Okay, so I would like to welcome our family and I think we're ready to get started shooting. Sound good Casey? Alright so this is the Jenkins family. Come on over you guys. Howdy do da. And, you're a photographer. Yes And, I forgot, what do you specialize in again? Newborns. Newborn babies, okay. And this is her beautiful family. Where are you guys from? Mill Creek. Mill Creek, Washington. You're mom's nervous. It's what happens when you get nervous is your hands start sweating. Trust me it happens to me like the first thirty minutes of a Creative Live, so don't worry. Okay and this is Miss Riley and you're eight? Mkay, and this is Mr. Rex. You're six? Yeah, do you guys, Oh nice job, Do you guys fight a lot? Um, yeah. Yeah? Do you borrow her stuff and not put it back? No. No? Does he? No, he doesn't? Oh that's pretty good, huh? I don't actually borrow her stuff. You don't borrow her stuff? Oh that's a really good little brother. And then this is Harrison, the man of the house here. You...
're so welcome, thank you. And they dressed awesome. Obviously she's a photographer. She kinda knew what she was doing. I usually just give her my stuff. You just what? You just get it yourself? No I just give her my stuff. You just give her your stuff? Oh so you borrow his stuff? No she just keeps it. She just keeps it. No wonder you guys are fighting a lot, huh? Do you fight a lot? No I just let her keep it. Oh you just, oh that's cause you're, 'cause you're just a nice giving big brother, or little brother. That's pretty awesome. Nice. So what Miss Riley doesn't know is that we share the same birthday. That's kinda cool huh? December 28th? Rock on Cappy! Welcome to the club! Okay, so we're gonna just kinda play with this family, pose them around let you guys get to have a little fun okay? And I think Mr. Rex should be taller than you today don't you think? What? What? That's not gonna happen! Awesome. No, stand up! (laughing) Stand up! No you guys are awesome. This is fun. Okay, so we're also working with a couple pairs of glasses here, okay? So what glasses can sometimes be an issue. Sometimes I ignore it and don't care and other times I'm like "Oh that looks terrible." So what I'll do is shoot it in camera. Often times too is I'll have mom take off glasses so I can get there eyes. And then take out the reflection in photoshop and reinsert their eye basically in. Or the angle of the light just needs to change and that'll help. But when you have two pairs of glasses it makes it even harder. Especially when we're having fun because people tilt their head in funky ways and those glasses are gonna flare. Which I know is gonna happen in advance so if I know I see a shot I'll be like "Okay can you turn your head that way? "We're gonna get a shot without the glasses "and see if we can't superimpose that back in." But for now I'm just gonna kinda let it fly. His glasses are super cute. Apparently there's a story behind the glasses that I'm eager to hear. And we'll go from there okay? So first of all let's, I've got camera and, let's see, camera's over there. Casey's over there. Perfect. I'm gonna have that come forward Casey a little bit. And yeah. The reason I'm doing that is for fall-off, okay? So I'm shooting that's good bud, thank you. I'm shooting with a Nikon D750, okay, and an 85 mm lens. So what I'm doing is I'm gonna kinda I'm gonna place them straight across and then I'm also gonna put on a curve. Okay, it's just for different variety I'm gonna change things up a bit. I'm gonna be doing stools, we're gonna start off simple then we're gonna add in the poof. Okay. But you'll notice that I'm always doing this. The L shape. Remember that? Because it helps to create the light fall off evenly. Okay? So and then I'll bring in the poof and we'll kinda have some fun. Okay, so who wants to be first? You? The kids do! Awesome sauce! Okay so let's go ahead and bring in yeah go ahead and sit down. Mom and Dad come on in. We're gonna do all of you. Right. The kids always wanna go for the stools. Yeah, okay so who's gonna fight over the stools 'cause we gotta give one to Mom. Ohh, Riley, you will? Ohh! Do not Do not! Do not give one to Mom. Do not give one to Mom? Okay, but I am gonna switch you around a little bit. Okay, so Mom I'm gonna have you put your legs over there for me. And then I'm gonna have you take this foot and put it up on the stool on the railing of the stool, perfect. See what I'm doing? Two parts, move 'em. Okay? Perfect. Good job. Then, we're gonna have Miss you're gonna scoot forward 'cause you get to share with your daughter. Miss Riley you get to sit right there with your legs that way. See what I'm doing? I'm kinda flipping and changing. Now, you get to stand up. How does that grab ya? Is he too tall? It's just not fair is it? When the little brother gets too tall. Stop! Okay, then Daddy we're gonna have you come around this side. Alright. Okay and you're gonna turn this way. Got it rockin' sauce? We good? And then you're gonna come slightly forward. See how I'm kind of creating so the light falls off evenly on all of them? And I just want you to grab your kid. There you go, perfect. Okay, and then you Miss darling, I'm gonna have you bring this foot up and over and put the knee put the leg on there can you do that for me? Oh flexible girl I'll help you. Ugh, ugh! There we go. Can you put it up there like that and just hug it? Perfect. See what I'm doing? Okay, now notice there's space right here. I don't like space. I don't mind a little space, but it's not kind of what I love, so we're gonna have you hop that direction just a little bit. And Daddy, you're gonna straddle the stool here. Just get as close as you can to him. Perfect. Awesome. And then Daddy bring your left shoulder back. Beautiful! Okay, see how I kind of made the space between them diminish? Okay? Now your right hand Daddy, I'm gonna have you put it on Riley's shoulder. Kinda behind her. Yeah, perfect. 'cause she's awesome sauce. Now Mommy I'm gonna have you scoot that way on the stool because what's gonna happen is Mommy's shoulder's are gonna throw a shadow on Riley's face. See that? So what I'm doing is I'm creating kind of a musical scale. Now Mr. Rex is tall. See he's almost as tall as his daddy. See that? (laughing) I love that. We're gonna shoot that. I'm taller than you Daddy. That's, kids love that right? That's who they are at this time. So we're gonna shoot this for now and then I'm gonna kind of vary Rex's height compared to Daddy. Dad I'm gonna have you put your right leg up on the on the railing right there. Other right, there you go. Yep perfect just like that. But, on the back of the stool. Can you do it or is it? There we go, perfect! That's what I wanted! Awesome sauce! And it looks a little awkward back there on his foot but I'm not gonna worry too much about it at this point. We're gonna shoot it and see what it looks like. Miss Riley you've got the most comfortable spot in the house don't ya? No I don't. You don't? Is your booty gettin' sore, huh? Is your booty gettin' sore? Okay so I'm gonna take a quick little test shot. I tend to shoot far away, okay? So the Creative Live people have told me that I need to kinda, there we are, that's looking a little bit better. There we are that's actually pretty even light. Okay I like that a lot actually. What I also do normally too, is I put a piece of shower board. Do you guys know what shower board is? Shower board you can get it from Home Depot. It's like 20 bucks for a big eight-foot sheet of it. It has a slight reflection to it. It's a really smooth surface so it creates a reflection on the ground and makes the ground white. Okay? Because my background lights are at power highest power right there and this is at those are at ten this is at eight right here. So when I'm exposing at about f7. which is a little bit wide but it, because they're kinda more or less on the same plane we should be nice and sharp in this image at this time, but I have to watch that shooting at f7. I might wanna go up, power up a little bit, because of the high key situation when we go to low-key and I make them more at an angle I'm probably gonna go up to like f13 or f or something like that. Okay? So, sorry where was I? I was telling you something. Oh shoot! (audience) Showerboard? Showerboard! Thank you very much! I appreciate it. The showerboard kind of creates that little shine which is kind of a cool commercial look. So just keep that in mind if you wanna create that shine to get something like that. Okay Melissa bring your right foot in just a touch on your tippy toe. Perfect. A little too much. Just down, beautiful. A little bit more in towards you. Perfect! Good job. I'm just kind of fussing with feet right now. Okay. Hey Rex. (laughing) I wanna look at the screen. Hey Rex! Hey Rex. You guys know something? You wanna know something? I have a secret to tell you. There's something that lives in my camera. Did you see him? You didn't see him? It's 'cause you weren't looking at the camera right? Riley I love what you're doing right now. You're so cute peanut. Did you know that there's a little critter in my camera? Did you see him? He winks at you. He winks at you but only oh, did you see him? It was just red. It was just red? Did my little camera go red? Did it wink at you? Yeah Do you know what that guys name is? Do you know what he is? Can you see him? You can see him in there right? It's just red. It's just red? He's a little froggy. Do you know what his name is? Harold. Did he wink at you? Do you see it? Yeah. He winked at you. Uh huh. Awesome. Okay, so now. Miss Riley, can you lean on Mommy? 'Cause she's pretty rad huh? She's okay. And then Mr. Rex. Can your Daddy kisses? Oh no! I think you might be taller than Daddy. Do you think so? How tippy toe can you get? Mommy and Riley, Riley can you look up at Mommy? What's she doin'? Yep! And hey Rex! Where's Daddy? Are you taller than him? Are you taller? I don't know. You're not. No?

I own I think all of Julia's classes. This is probably my favorite. I will say that it's because its exactly the type of photography I have been wanting to focus on. So the information was extremely valuable to me. But I do love all of Julia's classes and you can learn so much from her as a mentor regardless of the type of portraits you shoot. Thanks Julia for a wonderful class I have watched it multiple times!

As always, Julia never disappoints! It has been so awesome to watch her work with such incredible intention, from concept to session to sales. Her energy and strategy are so motivational and very, very creative! This class rocks from start to finish, and is a perfect addition to my Creative Live business arsenal! Five stars all the way!!!!!

My favorite part was seeing how Julia's business evolved over time and transformed into what it is today. Good tips for finding inspiration to develop a niche and practical marketing advice. I'm glad I took this alongside Tamara's business class - the two photographers had very different approaches to their business and shooting family photography in many ways, but it really illustrators how there's no one way to do everything. I learned so much from both of them.
