Self Management

there's a saying that goes, people don't quit jobs, They quit bad managers and now that you're becoming your own boss, you won't be able to quit. We all had terrible managers and awful bosses and if I ask you to rate yourself as your own boss, what would you say? You are probably going to walk yourself harder than any boss would and you're going to be more self critical than any of your other managers. So how do you do that? How do you manage yourself as both the boss and the employee? We need to understand what needs to be managed and how to strike a balance between your needs and your ambitions. Any human being has a variety of needs, biological, physiological, emotional needs, you have psychological needs, you even have mental needs, all of these different levels of your existence require attention and management. Now as your own boss, you have all the flexibility in the world. You can train yourself to work harder and longer. You can become more resilient, smarter, you can become m...

ore mentally mature, more mentally sharp. But in the likeliest case, you are not perfect. There are certain areas in your life that you will go and developing very naturally while there are others where you will be more prone to make mistakes is your own boss. There is no one to sit you down and say, hey, you're taking on too much walk. Maybe you should take a break and when the same person that needs a break is the one that's pushing the pace, Things can get complicated and you're at risk of getting trapped in a very vicious cycle. If you don't dedicate the time to anticipate manage and navigate this new set of challenges, You will run yourself into a dead end. This is by no means an exhaustive list of things that you should be doing to look after yourself. But this is the bell Bell minimum. When it comes to your physical and biological needs, you must not compromise your sleep, nutrition and level of activity to not jeopardize your general health. Of course, building a business requires you to exile from your comfort zone and make sacrifices. It goes almost without saying. But for how long and at what cost this is what you need to determine Some of it. You will have to learn the hard way and it's 100% okay to learn these things the hard way. But you should also remember that for every day you don't sleep well, eat well or neglect. Your health is a day in which you borrow from your future self. This is a loan that eventually you will have to pay back. Now. How about your psychological and mental needs When you embark on a new venture, your psychological and mental aspects are going to be hit the hardest because you are going through so much, so much resistance. So much new information, So many things that you'll be doing for the first time, So much uncertainty that you will most likely be overwhelmed at times. How can you cope with it? What should you be doing? Well, we'll give you the basic seal, but this is not a replacement for further reading. So if you're in it for the long run, we do encourage you to go and explore number one, make sure you have time to recharge 24 hours in the week that you can afford to decompress, to think, to declutter your desk and to just be number two is you need to have someone in your corner, someone that can listen to you that can offer advice and emotional support, someone that really sees you. If things get too crazy, you can use a friend, a partner, a board of advisors, a mentor people from your professional community, anyone with which you can share your frustrations, questions and as silly as it sounds, your success is feedback from your environment will go a long way in motivating you and keeping you healthy. Number three, familiarize yourself with the signs and symptoms of mental health challenges so that you can identify them if and when they arise, burnout, chronic stress, anxiety, they might sound similar, but they are vastly different. These phenomenons indicate different issues and require different coping mechanisms. Some alarming symptoms are lack of motivation, becoming irritable, not being able to fall asleep or waking up too early, any problem with your digestion or if things that were once fun or no longer enjoyable. These are allowed signals that means that a mental health issue is becoming serious now. If you see yourself losing control of your thoughts or simply being unable to concentrate, even if you're making more mistakes than you should at work, these all lead up into a matter that needs to be examined and addressed thoroughly. There are ways to address each and every single one of these issues without stopping your day to day work. But if you're not aware that they exist or if you refuse to accept that they happen, nothing will be able to help you. So it is entirely after you to understand when you are getting into the danger zone to make sure you are well familiar with the risks and potential responses to them. We've collected a series of resources for you to read as part of this course.
