Vary Pose With Posture And Camera Angles
and then another thing that's super important for any of these poses is posture andi I don't mean like my sister my grandma did used to put books on my head to try to get me to walk straight it didn't work but she's trying to help like you school help me like foster like straight up like that because what happens a lot of times if you tell somebody to sit up or stand up straight they tense right like they get like this and when it ends up happening is my shoulders or raised my neck is pulled back and this this isn't good so you want good posture but I would avoid like stand up straight good posture because people do this so instead what you're actually doing in almost every pose to make it look better is you're actually along gating like that's really what you're trying to dio because if you notice when somebody for example I take this off so I can see when somebody sits in a chair for example no you can't tell too much but I'll try if you sit in a chair and he slouch everything bunch ...
is right here and so it's not me going like this that helps it's along getting like pulling up to the top of my head and so instead those were the two words I recommend you use either you think of like you're actually thinking about elongating or you communicate that to your subjects so avoid good posture sit up straight and said can you pull up to the top your head and lean forward towards me something like that um same thing if somebody is laying on their side the reclining on the ground when everything's bunched up it makes them look shorter it makes them look heavier it draws more attention to areas that you don't want to so even when you have someone laying down you're still trying to pull in a long gay things so I think along gets a great word to think of because it's whether you're sitting whether you're standing whether you're lying down so just keep that in mind as well so that's that's the thing that I will often say you'll hear me say okay great now what I want you to do is I want you to I want you to stand up and I want you to longer pull up to the top your head that's great now lean towards me a little perfect like that kind of thing versus when people do this kind of lean back this is everything wrong when people are trying to pose cool uncomfortable hips towards the camera neck down leaning back slouched instead of it it's a poll puts atop your head and elongate so those are things that I am always talking about and I'm always avoiding slouching so something that I found with people that are really difficult and annoying to pose because I'm sure you have had them they're just grumpy or just totally not into it I'm fine saying you know what why don't you just take a seat comfortably and I don't mind letting them like comfortable whether it's sitting on the floor or whatever you let him get comfortable and then I'll say okay so what what what works in that pose hopefully there's something uh and then I tweak it okay that's good I'm just gonna have you turned to the side a little bit now pull it to the top your head great and lean towards me like I make him feel like I didn't just pose them I tweaked it because sometimes that makes them feel a little more involved in the process or at least they kind of got comfortable and then you tweak it my friend jenn rosenbaum she did like boudoir session of me and I was a willing subject because I wanted great photos and sometimes the best poses are super uncomfortable and so you know it's a difficult subject I try to get them comfortable first then work with it was so funny I'm not kidding I was sore the next day after working with her because I was like olden was stomach and our mom was awesome I love the photo she's a great photographer all right so let's look at this real quick like watch the huge difference alright so this girl is like a size zero to right tiny but when I told her I literally just said do me a favor take a seat and relax this is what I get so look at how the shirt bunches up and the shoulders curve definitely not flattering to her then I tell her to sit up street she raises her shoulders she definitely gets more elongated but it's obvious that this is super pose and she's really uncomfortable so then I tell her okay great clips in the top your head just relax your shoulder shake it out and then everything gets more comfortable watch the difference between the length of her neck like there's almost no neck and that and then in this her neck is like five times longer and some of the things that we consider to be beautiful imposing is long next like that is something that were generally trying to do there's not really many poses where we try to go with no neck right so I'm watching out for that as well and then you can see basically if I told somebody you know what what I want you to do is pull it to the top your head and I want you to lean forward towards me what I don't want them to dio slouch forward because sometimes people might think that instead I want them to put the top of their head and lean because then everything is still straight still elongated longneck and then it's bringing their best assets forward so using those words a little differently when I tell someone to lean forward and make sure they're not doing this it's the least you can see that here the differences in her back it makes a huge difference in the post and doesn't matter if you're sitting or you're on the ground or standing but that doesn't really make a difference even here if I were doing this pose I still have her pull up to the top of her head and a long gate a little bit she'll still look comfortable but she's going to look a lot more slender and also more confident this has a little less confidence to it than that post so those are some things to add to your checklist so we already talked about this and I am going to demo what makes a different shot all of this and then keep this next thing in mind as well when you get one of these ten poses set up you can change any or any combination of these things and make a totally different posts you start with one and then you just tweak it to one hundred different things so you can change hands maybe the hands go like let's say that this is my pose okay maybe the hand goes from straight down on the hips on my face beside my face too behind my head to across my body so I've all I've done is move one hand and every single one of those really was a different pose and now let's add the other one end hand on my face hands above my head both hands that like it all of them are different poses and all I did just there was my hands so I know I convey my hands also the head especially with two people together are their faces pressed together are they looking at each other they tilted towards each other that's something I can do or let's go back to this pose for example I can put my head towards the camera or I can look straight on it's a big it's communicating something different this is a little bit more aggressive and confident this is a little bit more happy so that's making different poses built into their shoulders you can vary things like maybe I would go ahead and well my shoulder forward a little bit or maybe it's aggressive straight on towards camera that could make a big difference with people posing together shoulder placement is a big one arms and just talking about like angles of what you put your arms knows feet and hips also make a huge difference because let's just say this I'm going to put one leg in front of the other okay I have my hand on the hip this is one post right but if I go ahead and I kick my hips way back ready this is actually I move my feet a little bit I move my hips but this is actually pretty different of opposed than this this is straightforward just a little bit of difference makes a big effect to the final photo so that's where I start with those poses night week all of those things or maybe um happy shooting I got the shot and I move on

This is a short, concise class, that is filled with great, basic posing information. It's more for the beginner though and while I did take away some excellent points, I wish I'd put the money towards a more advanced Lindsay Adler class that I could have taken more from. She's one of the best teachers on Creative Live, so go for it if you need some solid advice on posing.
