What Will You Need To Change To Reach This Goal?
The next question is, what do you need it to change in order to reach this goal? Because a lot of times, people set goals that require ambitious action, and the question is, what do you need a change in your business to reach this goal? All of you that shared your goals seemed very reasonable. It seems like, hey, you feel like you could produce this much, and you could get your marketing together to solve this much, but for some people, they're gonna have to change something about what they're doing. And so there are three things. If you're feeling like what I get to the school, okay, so its production that's marketing but how do I move from where I am, where I wanna be there's three different things you can do the first one is to filter everything else out. The best way to reach the goal is to have one goal and work on it single mindedly so that was a sales goal. You work on your production, you work on your marketing, you're going towards the school, you don't decide. Oh, you know wh...
at? I could also maybe teach a class, or I will also maybe introduce a whole new line of stuff, a whole new line of stuff, a class a craft show is if it's not in line with your goal, whatever your main goal is it's going to distract you from reaching it and it's going to take longer so filter everything else out this includes all of the things that you do in your work day that aren't moving you towards your goal, which we're going to talk about a lot today the second thing is to become even more effective with the time you have so if you have been you know I have a two hour work session but I only get one thing made but you know, if you became more effective maybe did it like a little assembly line or you had everything laid out I know the difference between when I cook and my husband cook and he cooks all the time that he does means on plus where you get everything out, you chop everything up first and then you go to cook it I I'm like, oh, I'll throw the noodles and oh, I need a onion I should topping on uniroyal quick oh no, I need a and I mean, I cook all the time but I don't get it all together first so I'm way more travelled on like putting it all together because I'm not doing it like in an effective way it makes me crazy that husband forever chopping peppers before he's even started cooking anything and I'm like it's getting late you have to put it on there but he wants to get it all together and that's why I'm talking about becoming effective is often we'll sit down to make our thing and we'll be like, oh, I don't have the thing I was run out of it like a shipping mailers, so I sat down to do shipping I printed off all my labels I got my tape out I don't have shipping the others after wait till tomorrow then you have to schlep to the store but if you are become effective in both your workstation and your time it's going to make it easier to reach your goal and the third thing is toe work on what matters to identify what actually makes the change so obviously making the product makes a change and also working on the marketing that is actually effective for your people makes a change filtering out everything else you could be doing with your time and working on what matters. So my question to you guys is a wet do you need to do what do you need to change in order to reach your goal? What do you have to change in your work day or in what you pay attention to? Are the things we're doing and if you're still school really is your true goal that you want to work one to the end of the year what do you need to get rid of stop doing filter out in order to reach that goal? Yes I need to I think I believe that I can filter things out yeah, I think I'm the person that was too old to be diagnosed with a d h d but found out much later in my life that my mother when I was a child would actually put her hands on either side of my face like blinders to get me to focus something yes I was like that's nice mom thank you for thirty eight thirty nine but you know I like all these things you're saying filter everything else have one goal that is so exhausting for me ok it's really hard for me to do that and part of the way that I make my work is that I do have all these tangents going in all these different directions and that's how I come up with my designs yes so that's that like freight train coming out is that it's really hard to do? And I think that that's the artist dilemma is you need to take in a lot of things to make connections that's what creativity that's right making connections between disparate things that didn't exist before and yet in order to actually if you're running a business you also have to be productive and efficient and that means filtering things out though when I challenged to do is think about what you want to help her out but what kind of distracting things do you want to keep in so like uh and I mean so often clicking around the internet feels like maybe looking at inspiration but in fact it's just like sucking you into a hole where is that going to museums and going to movies isn't goofing off it's actually like getting inspiration or reading or like looking at a beautiful magazine or walking and being nature whatever inspires you you still want to do all of those things and that's we're going to talk about this more later like I'm a big fan of having boundaries to stop work and go have fun and get inspired so maybe in your filtering things out you don't filter them out of your life you filter them out to these other times these inspiration times he's like idea noodling whatever and for a lot of artists you can only kind of bee at the easel or at the jeweler's table for so many hours and then you need to get away and do other stuff so it's not about the grinding out and doing mohr it's knowing like okay, I have an hour that I can paint and then I need to go to non painting things in orderto inspired me to come back and paint and that all counts in your work day that all counts as you being working in being effective does that make sense if it exhausts you to filter it out? We're going to talk about this in the future segment, but you can get rid of the distractions like so what I find is that a lot of people just want to use there will be focused as opposed tio making their environment conductive to focusing so if you have all your tabs open and you think I just won't look at those taps, they just won't look at those tabs like you're you're using up all this mental space to not look at the tabs when you could just like, close them out right? Or like save them somewhere for you to look at later but don't force yourself to filter it out but make your environment really distracting so well, we're going to talk about the second thing, but figuring out when you work back, some people need a little distraction. Some people in the know distraction was really up to you to set that environment up so you don't have to do this any other comments or questions about your goals or about the sales math has a chat room doing they are doing good, having some good conversations and, um talking about social media as probably comes up a lot way how to get having get things done let's let's go check in terms of questions um let's see is there a diamond on had to balance your time for production and marketing of your products? Yes, this is a question that I get a lot and there isn't there, nobody can tell you a number like there is no, this is what you should dio and I mean so there's a lot of numbers out there for businesses that will say, like, spend three times as much marketing as you spend. Uh, I don't know creating products, but those air for different kinds of businesses when you physically make the items, you need to take a lot of time to physically make the items so I can't give you like a percentage, but I can say for you to look at where you are maybe avoiding or lacking now most people, their avoiding some area. So some people say I'm spending time marketing, and really, they just spent time on social media and that's not necessarily connecting with the right customers. It might be talking to other makers, and it might be just like sharing links that have nothing to do with their business or taking pictures of their dog, and none of that is necessarily effective in your marketing time. You want to look at what you're avoiding doing and ifyou're marketing, and you're making your really spending that time doing that. Thing if you're not like goofing off with something else but there's no, it really depends on anything because some businesses that have such um physically demanding like it takes many, many, many hours to make your thing so you need to spend those hours to make it but most people now am I often production norm I often marketing and then focus your time on the thing you tend to avoid so we have somebody saying answering your question of what they would need to change yet and the user says I have just started to put boundaries on friends and family because I work at home they treat every day as a weekend and I and like I'm not actually working eso boundaries are hard for me but it is starting to work well to have any ten so glad or you know you were going to talk about boundaries and think segment two and they're coming up segment about how important it is though have time dedicated to work and time dedicated to not work both things are equally important and most people I meet go from one extreme to the other like they'll let all of their non work obligations flow into their work time and never feel like they have work time and or they will let all of their work flow into their not work time and never have time off and they never get inspired so then they so then there's no there's, no boundaries, and some think this person is talking about other people boundaries if the other people in your life aren't respecting your work time, that's your responsibility now some people are always going to be awful people, but you can do a lot to set your own boundaries and then enforce them. So if your mother always calls when she knows you're going to be working or your neighbor ask you to go run an errand for her, when when it's your work time first question after self is, have you clearly communicated, but this is your work time? Does everyone else know these air my hours? Because they hear from a lot of people that are like I couldn't believe so and so called me in the middle of my workday they don't respect my work, they don't think of his job and he said, what did you tell that person is your work day? Did you say, hey, I'm working from this hour to this hour? I can't talk if you didn't communicate that, then they don't know that that and most people have no idea what, uh, creative herself employed persons workday is like, so you can't expect them to respect boundaries they don't know exist the first thing is to communicate clearly what your boundaries are actually I would say step zero is to set up trees decide on what your work time is and we'll talk about that next but then the first thing is to come munich ate them and the second thing is to reinforce them and make sure you're not it's kind of like with training my dog you want not uh reward wrong behavior so my dog jumps on me and I don't have to jump on me after not give him attention and love every time he jumps on me if my mom calls during my work session and he did not give her attention love on the phone to reward that doesn't mean I'm horrible I just say hey this is my work time mom it's okay I'll call back later or I tell her or I'll text I'll say I didn't pick up the phone because I'm working I'll call you at ext time that's reinforcing my boundary there and mom is probably watching I love you mommy call me any time but uh but you need to make sure that you want to communicate it you reinforce it and you don't reward behavior that overlaps your boundaries and I mean they're always exemptions like like somebody in the hospital or your kid just bang their head like obviously you got flow with life as you go but you also want to make sure that if something can wait you communicate to the other person not just. I'm not going to do this now, but I'm not going to do it because I'm working. And the more the other people in your life hear that, the more they'll come to respect that. Even if they don't respect what you do, they'll they'll stop asking you to do things when you're working. That's, great. That helped you was really great. I think we can apply that to a lot of things.

A really great class. As a newer creative business owner I have had trouble with always feeling like no matter what I worked on it wasn't the right thing or it wasn't enough. I think the advice in this class will help me feel better about my accomplishments and keep me focused on the things that will help my business. Thanks!

I loved it! start to finish really packed full of sensible easy to follow advice - great workbook and extra materials. Highly recommended. Tara does continually mention STARSHIP and MAPPING with out any background info on these topics which began to niggle at me but guess the answers are on her website. This was my first full class after purchasing my Creator Pass and it gets a 10/10
