Course Introduction
Hello, and welcome to Creative Live. We are here today with Logo Design for Your Small Business with Matthew Jervis. Let me just tell you a little bit about Matthew. He is a graphic designer, a working art director, and a former instructor here at Creative Live. He is also the author of How to Entertain, Distract and Unplug Your Kids. So always great to have Matthew here at Creative Live, so Matthew, let's get down with logo design. Welcome to Creative Live. Thanks, Jim. Thanks, everybody. Thanks for plugging in, thanks for showing up. It's actually kind of a thrill to be the first class of the new DIY series, and I think it's a really great place to start. Logos are always a good place to start. Logos are very difficult to do, and they're very difficult to do right, but today, I'm gonna walk you through some exercises, introduce you to some tools that will help you get on track in helping you create the perfect logo for you. So like Jim said, my name is Matthew. I have been an ident...
ity logo designer for quite a number of years, I've designed a lot of logos. Some have been good, others have been great, and I'm also an instructor. I do brand strategy, and visual storytelling, so I'm kind of in a unique place to be doing this class because I understand what it takes to make the logo but then I understand what the logo's supposed to do, how it's supposed to work and how it's supposed to represent you, so I kind of have a little bit of the both ends of the spectrum there. So but before we get started, I wanted to see you guys, introduce you guys and also, learn what got you here. So Yoni, you wanna start? I am Yoni Mayeri. I am a photographer, and an iPhone-ographer, and a presenter. iPhone-ographer? Yes. That's a thing? That's a thing, for sure. Okay. And I teach a lot of workshops in iPhone-ography, Oh, cool. And I got here because I love Creative Live, and I've always been interested in graphic design, and I don't really have a logo for my business. I use an avatar that I'm known through, but I thought it might be helpful to consider this, so I thought it'd be fun to go back into my past training of graphics. Great. And learn something new. Great, welcome. Thank you. Thank you. My name's Marisa Wallwork. I work in tech, but I am currently in the middle of a career change. So I'm a UX design student, and I thought, probably I'm gonna need a great personal logo for my portfolio, so that's what brought me here. Yes. And I'm really excited. Cool, welcome. Thank you. Hi, I'm Carrie Formasen, and I am a serial crafter and teacher and I do crafting workshops, and my branding is all over the place. So I thought that starting with a solid logo and building off that would be a great way to start, so that's why I'm here. Yeah, and I'm actually glad you brought up the branding bit because this is really a great place to start your branding and how you move through a brand. Getting the story right and represented correctly in a logo is job one. So really quickly, I wanted to give us a little brief update about what we're gonna do. We're gonna start with definitions. I always find it's a good idea to start with definitions, so we're all on the same page. What makes a successful logo? There are three easy steps. What types of logos are out there? What do I, when do I need a logo and how can I use it? Other options to getting one made, if you choose not to do it yourself, go over that a little bit, pros and cons. The process, then we'll get into the process of doing it yourself, color, type, refining, and finally, producing and making it, launching it into the world.

Loved all the prep work info and how that translates into a great logo design. The class was easy to follow, the instructor answered some great questions, and it was a great overview of how to create a logo.

I want to thank Matthew for a great insight into designing a logo. I am not an artist, have no creative experience in the digital or marketing or banding world, and because of this class, I actually designed a logo! I want to open a small kids art studio for classes in my neighborhood and I was looking to design my own logo to use in a Wordpress site and small scale branding/marketing and some building signage, and thanks to Matthew's easy and sensible approach to design, i was able to it. I def. recommend this class.

Great intro to logo design. Matthew outlined some great steps to take to kick off my logo creation process. I think I'll be able to save a lot of time and money working with a pro for final design as I'll be able to come to them with a more clear idea of what I'm looking for.
