Logo Creation Considerations

Now, let's kind of make this personal. What is it, and I want to just actually quickly ask you guys, you're thinking of a logo, you want to use a logo, you want to design your logo, how are you gonna use your logo? Let's start here. On a website. Website. Website. Website? Business card and website. Business card, okay, good. Go print. Yeah, so digitally, we're using it, favicons, the little bugs in your bookmarks and browser. Websites, obviously, are huge. I mean, we have a lot of different ways we use them. There's a lot of different digital environments that it can be used. Then, obviously, business systems and print, your invoices. Again, ad print, I have web there twice. Schwag, of course. T-shirts, stickers, mugs. I mean, we all want to have our logo either stitched or screened onto a T-shirt. Then, of course, for photographers, a watermark is really important, too. We're gonna get into that a little bit later. Okay, so, now those are the ideas. But, when do you reall...

y need to get a logo. I mean, is there a point in time where you're like, "Okay, now's the time I need a logo." So, you don't really need a logo until you want one. As soon as you want a logo, then you need a logo. So, you might want to give yourself a little bit more of a professional, more considered attitude in the marketplace. But, still, you might be hedging because, again, creating a logo is a time-suck. It can also be a money-suck. You want to sort of pace that. As a small business owner, you have a lot of other things going on that might take priority over getting a logo made. So, there's all this sort of, "I'm gonna put it off. "When do I need it?" But, again, we're gonna be getting you on a fast track quite easily through this class. If you answer yes to any of these questions, it might be time for a logo. Let's go through 'em. Number one, will you be competing for the attention of clients and customers in an already crowded marketplace? Will you be entering an already thriving industry where you will be required to steal business away from other, more established companies? Or do you plan to advertise? If you can say yes to any of these, what the heck? You're in the right place. You're learning how to make a logo. Now, obviously, I talked a little bit about this in the beginning. There's lots of options. You might go though this class and be like, "I'm not gonna do it myself." There's lots of other options to do it. But, really quick to that point. Going through this class is going to take us through a lot of exercises that's gonna be really valuable for you if you did in fact get a freelancer or another designer to help you because hiring a freelancer or a designer is a process. They have their own process. In a lot of cases, they have to learn about you, they have to learn about your industry, they have to do some research on their end. Doing this class, like I said, even if you don't make it yourself, you've already taken up, you've done a lot of that research. You've done a lot of that introspection. So, you can come saying, this is where I want to go. So, let's save some money. That's one of the things about hiring a designer that you should understand. The other things that hiring a professional, is that they, again, they have their own process, but they might have some insight into how you can use it. So, you want to cut to the chase and get to what their real value is. But, a lot of people take up a lot of time in figuring out and doing that stuff and that can take a lot of time and money. Crowdsourced design sites are an interesting situation. Basically, you're outsourcing to a crowd of people via an open call for contributions. If you've ever heard of these sites, basically, you can decide how much money you want to spend, shoot out what you're looking for, and they will give you back, people from all over the world, sort of, come in and deliver a logo to you and you can just choose what you want. Now, you're not gonna be able to have, like, back and forth. You're not gonna be able to not like something and want to change something, cause you kind of get what you get. So, there's that. But, then, why we're here. We want to do it ourselves. Again, going through the process, you can save some money if you want to go the other options, but I'm pretty comfortable that with this process, you'll be able to at least come up with some directions, some type experiments and some color experiments. Doing it ourselves is also kind of cool. So, we like that.

Loved all the prep work info and how that translates into a great logo design. The class was easy to follow, the instructor answered some great questions, and it was a great overview of how to create a logo.

I want to thank Matthew for a great insight into designing a logo. I am not an artist, have no creative experience in the digital or marketing or banding world, and because of this class, I actually designed a logo! I want to open a small kids art studio for classes in my neighborhood and I was looking to design my own logo to use in a Wordpress site and small scale branding/marketing and some building signage, and thanks to Matthew's easy and sensible approach to design, i was able to it. I def. recommend this class.

Great intro to logo design. Matthew outlined some great steps to take to kick off my logo creation process. I think I'll be able to save a lot of time and money working with a pro for final design as I'll be able to come to them with a more clear idea of what I'm looking for.
