Points for Money
We are on lesson number six, which is points for money. So in our last lesson, we got everyone set up with rewards network so you can earn points and miles while you eat. We also taught you how to use online shopping miles to get points for everything you have to shop for funny story bill raced out of here like there was an emergency, and he called his wife and he said, hold off, don't buy that vacuum cleaner until I tell you how so we've got action here happening in this room, and we're really excited about everything that's going on. We've got some goals for today. We're going to teach you how to earn miles for your banking for savings accounts, we're going to get familiar with different kinds of offers, all kinds of offers out there and the ones you take a van job will be special to you, and then we're going to teach you how to find those current deals and bonuses because we can't teach you howto find everything thirty days isn't long enough. When I hand off to chris to talk about m...
oney, I'm going to give you a couple of examples and the other reason why we're not teaching you all of the different opportunities is there frequently changing? So we'll tell you a few of them but will also teach you the tools about how you can gain access to everything that's coming up next month and next month and beyond that so everyone dines everyone shops most of us bank most of us have a place that we put our money there are a couple of examples a couple of ways to earn money are two ways to earn miles rather on your money one great one for a lot of people not for everyone but for a lot of people is bank direct so bank direct dot com is just ah national bank it's based in texas fbi see insured on instead of paying interest on savings accounts which is kind of negligible it hasn't really been that much over the past few years they actually pay out in miles so they partner with american airlines and for every one thousand dollars you have on deposit every month they deposit one hundred miles in your account s o this is a good idea if you have an emerg seafront that's mostly kind of cash on lee you don't really want to invest it somewhere you just want to keep it somewhere safe but it's somewhat substantial this is a great way to put it a great place to put it so that you can earn miles for that there is a twelve dollars monthly fee for it as well so if you just have a small amount of savings, maybe it's not best to put it there, it's better to just not pay any fees, but if you have something substantial it's a great option to get american miles coming in every month, then if you do have an investment account or you want to plan for that at some point for the past few years, there has been a bonus from fidelity, where you can earn up to fifty thousand united miles or american miles or delta skymiles there's three different offers this's just one screenshot, and this may change or may not change in the future, but as of right now, it is still available depending on the amount that you deposit that's the amount that they kind of put into your mileage account, they're used to kind of be a creative trick you could do where you could just deposit a little bit and then, like, withdraw that and keep depositing that doesn't work anymore. But if you do have some substantial investments, I can put it there. Thank the maximum is to earn fifty thousand fifty thousand miles for a deposit of one hundred thousand dollars, so if you're watching and you're like that's, great, but I don't have a hundred k to just drop into my investment account. No problem um one thing I would mention no is that is that offer is available every year, so actually if you are able to do that or if you know someone a friend or family member they can actually get that bonus every year so there's also all kinds of ways to earn points and miles for lots of other things insurance payments, tv especially like cable tv or satellites, telephone and internet sometimes there's actually bonuses on that. We'll talk a little bit about that. An upcoming lesson utilities, medical services on charitable donations there's all kinds of different ways out there. I think this is screenshot of a direct tv offer it's been going on for years it's probably not going to go anywhere. We all like to bang hq in different ways. We all spend money on different things. We have different priorities that's normal. The point is to use these principles and customize your earning strategy for whatever works best for you. And so let's just remember the goal that we set the other day. Your goal is the traveler is to set up this system to turn everything that you eat, drink and buy into points and miles, right? So a lot of this it could be done automatic on automated systems where I wanted to set up you don't have to do anything else about it on that's great so how do you learn about these offers there's a couple of different ways to do it and remember last week we talked about the travel hacking profiles and the traveler profiles and you said okay, like I'm in a apprentice or I'm an enthusiast maybe I'm in a rock star, you know, fireman apprentice or an enthusiast if I don't really want to spend a lot of time on these things here's a really simple thing you can do, you can just go to the urn miles page on your preferred airlines websites and there's going to be a bunch of different offers there. There's one for delta there's, one for aero plan in canada even international carriers if you're watching from outside of north america, they usually have offers there's usually an urn miles page on what you see there aren't really like big tips or tricks or anything that's kind of secrets all public, but there are some basic offers you might as well get started with that. Another easy thing you can do is take surveys you won't earn a ton of miles from taking surveys but just takes a few moments and you can do it right away you can do it in your own time there's a lot of different survey website you can go and return for, you know, sharing your opinion they'll deposit miles or points in your account so do it when I'm in line at the grocery store you can exchange your facebook time for survey time you can earn a few hundred points you know month exactly so all these little pockets of time you might as well put them to you so opinion rewards club dot com is one or maybe it's dot co dot uk I believe that's a uk based offer there's some others as well e dash smiles dot com rewards dot com opinion miles club dot com and by the way I realize in this lesson and in many of the other lessons we're actually like throwing out a whole bunch of length and so just so you know you can find all of these links and resource is in the facebook group for dream trip creative live you can find it on travel hacking dot org's slash dream trip will be sharing some pds of all the different links throughout the whole course so you can go there and access that for free and all of you have a workbook everybody here in the studio audience many people as well watching from home have a workbook if you don't that's okay but our activity for today is to visit the urn miles page on your preferred airline's website what I just talked about to find a deal you can take advantage of for miles so this as I said is the apprentice you know enthusiast kind of strategy in a moment, stephanie is going to share a few advanced things you khun dio, if you want to do more than just like, learn what the airline tells you about the first minute. Yeah, chris, thanks. I just wanted teo mention to everybody that doesn't have the workbook already. The way that you get that is when you do purchase any time access to this boot camp to the course, so it is upon the course page that's where you can go and download it once you do by the course, and that is the follow along for the entire course, so, thanks, thanks so much. How could we find maybe more advanced deals? How can we, like find some really fun stuff? Well, everything that you need to know about anything is on the internet, right? So I'm going to start with the most out of control way. So if you are watching this course and you are really, really, really into this, or if you've been doing this for a while and you're really excited about it, one of the plate, one of the places where you can find the most information about everything, points of miles, everything you ever need to know or never need to know you can find on this website called flyertalk, and this is a point in mile forum and there's. Lots of different things here. You can search by airline. You can search by deals. Ah lot of the things we're going to be talking about in the morning. Uh, later weeks of this course about booking points and things. You confined here on fire talk and there's. Another forum like this called mile point mile points probably a little bit easier if you're just starting out. Kind of in in mileage forums. And this is fire talk, dot com and mild point dot com again, the links are at travel hacking dot org's last dream trip and so maybe if you don't want to, like, delved into ah, hi tech point smiles for him. Another thing you can do is read a lot of points of miles. Blog's there's a lot of points of miles. Bloggers out there. Um, some of the ones we like one mile at a time view from the wing. Our friend gary writes that, um, travel is free. Dot com drew was gonna be here in less than twenty four, and he writes his great points in miles blawg. And if you are looking at points and miles in a specific niche, you can look at boarding area dot com is actually a whole network of points and miles bloggers um if you are outside of the us and you want to earn miles on a specific airline, there are points of miles bloggers who write about very specific airlines as well. One of the easiest things to do is just to google, you know, points in miles blawg, lufthansa and you'll find someone who writes about howto only get lift honza points it's pretty amazing, but here's some international blog's and forums rewards canada dot c a if you're in australia, there's actually an entire network just like flyertalk that's solely focused on earning miles in australia and that's, australia, australia frequentflier, dot com dot you and head for points dot com is all about learning british airways avio smiles so there are tons of ways that you can get information on points and miles. Um, but if you if you don't want to spend the time figuring out all of the ways you can get point two miles if you want to take a more passive approach and let someone else figure out how to tell you how to get points in miles, chris and I have a site called the travel hacking cartel, and what we do is it's a subscription service, and we curate different deals and then actually send them to you when you sign up and there's actually a special offer for this course I'm actually the one who reads all the forums and I carry it all the deals which I know is so much to tell you and anyways so we have a special offer for this course and when you go to travel hacking dot org's slash dream trip you'll see that you can sign up for a thirty day trial for one dollar and check that out wait do some q and we would love to teo maybe that that will be one of the main thing that's great people I learned that I should ask for questions before I go to the next light so let's let's do that raise your hand if you have a question you have a question for a question and you keep thinking because I was a lot a lot of information teo you know just kind of jumped right into um I feel like thie the banking like are you gonna be giving us any of us? Here is what I do use bank direct thank you's correct absolutely I don't actually use bank direct I'm one of the people who doesn't have a cz I told you in less and one I mostly do nonprofit humanitarian work so I'm not a person who has fifty grand to keep infidelity account unfortunately, but I there's lots of other ways I earn points and miles I d'oh ah lot of I do a lot of surveys I do, um, anytime, there's, anything I need to buy? Um, I just want I just got my car I did when I was doing insurance quote there, I believe, on the american airlines site if you requested insurance quote from somebody, you can earn points and miles actually bought your whole car with what I did, but we're going to talk about that in the next lesson, we talked about using your credit cards so there's a lot of different ways that you can get started, I'll say one of my favorite travel hackers happens to be my dad and I went through I'm not a really big shopper, but I went through a lot of the things that they that they services that they have signed up for and recognize things just from these earn miles pages of, like, security lifelock, security service and different ways you can there's different ways you can pay your mortgage using online service to earn points in miles. So there's there's lots of different ways out there and the way that you, the way that you're gonna earn miles really depends on what you're buying. So it's hard to just tell you exactly what you should do, I think I think first it's also kind of changes over time as well, so I don't really do a lot of surveys. Right now like I'm not interested in earning two hundred miles for you know doing the survey it well next time I'm in the grocery line I'll think of I'm more interested in maybe a bigger bonuses but back in the day I did a lot of service back in the day I would do all kinds of small things whatever I could possibly do to terry miles so it really is doesn't turned on you and I think your question quick question round the survey so I know like I've heard the past that you points could potentially expire and that if you use the surveys it creates activity so your points don't expires that still that is absolutely correct we will touch on the future lesson but you're absolutely right people are liking my miles going to expire you khun do something small like take a survey or subscribe to the magazine you know using your miles for a very small amount and that we'll just restart the whole three year for your clock or whatever it's great questions yes artist service just for the state source of international they're actually international so that the first one we showed you opinion rewards I think it is is mostly based in the uk the opinion miles club is specific to united airlines but the rewards I know specifically has a whole long list of um airlines in different countries that you can earn miles for infact I use the surveys a lot for some of the airline's that I don't have a lot of miles in, so for example, I haven't etc how to count, and I have things cook thirty thousand miles in my etsy hot account that I got when something bad happened on my flight, and we'll explain that to you guys in a future lesson, but I don't earn a lot of miles on etihad, and so I don't want those thirty thousand miles to expire until I could do something with them, so I can sign up for rewards to earn miles in etihad, and that will keep those miles from expiring. Any other questions, I guess, a similar kind of question again learning about all these offers, it seems like the primary way of learning about it is through your airlines information on their web page is, um, you know, any other tips for finding out about all this? You know, I would say that's, the that's, the introductory way of learning, like everyone should visit their airlines. Aaron miles paige, you're probably going to see some stuff that you haven't seen before or if you've never done it it's a great introduction, and then, like stephanie, was showing off, if you want to get more into it, there is a rabbit hole. You can go as far down as you want you can spend you know, hours a day on a forum most people don't want to do that forms of gold maybe for him eventually you know or the service that we mentioned or blog's mean blog's air free it's all depends on how much time you want to stay I think a lot depends on how you get information as well so you if you're a proactive kind of learner and you can go to the urn miles page if you'd rather people email you things, you can go to those airline pages and sign it for their special offers and they'll send you the information they have online. You know if you are a blogger reader, if you read bloods through our assess you consign him for the rcs there some of these blog's I'm not a big blawg reader but I consult I would get a lot of my information from twitter I like short things and you can follow some of these bloggers and points of miles you know hobbyist on twitter and get a lot of the information there so I would say think about how you get information and you get information best and then look at how you can find out about point two miles deals in that day quick pub your travel harkin cartel that is awesome site so I was on the sales getting overwhelmed like trying to find so many points and knowledge and the side does offer some some good sites and makes it a lot easier on the brain as well. Thank you for saying that we'll give you the money later. That's also would love to know what's, uh, what's. The most important thing of the number. One thing that you you've learned today, anyone? Yes, please. Learning about the rabbit hole that you khun go down, I've done, you rewards before you're an airline and sort of actually stopped doing that. But now I feel like, oh, there's this whole world to its more of, you know, weird things you could do that. Fantastic. Just a little tip about eve rewards. I know you have mileage. You have points in a lot of different mileage programs. You can actually sign up with eve awards with different email addresses and then put those get earn miles in different program so you can keep multiple programs from expiring most important for you.

Highly recommended! This is one of the best CreativeLive courses I've ever taken and a great value. There's a lot of excellent information here, presented in a fun and accessible way. The CL "boot camp" approach was perfect for this topic because it dispenses the material in bite size pieces with very doable action steps along the way. The corresponding Facebook group adds even more value and camaraderie. It's a great place to clear up any questions or confusion that may come up. What an amazing resource! By the end of the course, not only will you have learned a tremendous amount, you will actually have something tangible to show for it!

This is a fabulous course. Stephanie and Chris are both so knowledgeable, helpful, and easy going. They clearly love and practice what they're teaching. And they're open to learning from the students too. The course is packed with information, delivered in an immediately useful way. In fact, they emphasize again and again that the point is to USE the information to REALLY take your "Dream Trip" soon! The Facebook group is the best I've ever experienced with an online course. Stephanie and Chris are remarkably present, responsive, understanding, and generous with their knowledge and experience. I highly recommend this course.
