How to Sanitize Before Making Lotion

One final thing to talk about when we make our lotions is sanitizing, so it's so important. Remember we talked about the preservative hurdle, right? If you are trying to make lotions and you have a cat, and this has been sitting out in your garage for three weeks there's gonna be dirt, microbes, everything in here. Your preservative, it doesn't matter what you're gonna do to it, it's not Hercules. It's not going to be able to overcome that. It's the same reason why if you've got a cast on, and then decide to go run a 5K the next day, you know what, the cast isn't gonna protect your broken leg. Preservatives, you have to start with basically a clean canvas, which means you have to sanitize everything. So make sure all your equipment is sanitized to avoid microbes and bacteria to start with, and we do it the same way they do in commercial kitchens and at restaurants you go to. It's a bleach water solution and it's just a 5% bleach water solution, which means one ounce of bleach to one ga...

llon of water, and all you do to sanitize is you literally just take this, dunk it, set it upside down on clean paper towels. When you get your paper towel roll you pull off the first one, and then on the inside of the paper towels, those are clean, those haven't been exposed to anything. So just dunk it, set it outside to dry upside down, it's ready to go in about five or 10 minutes. Your products need to be as free of germs and bacteria and microbes as possible to be safe for you, your family, your friends, and your customers, so make sure you start with that clean canvas and you bleach all your utensils. We do have a question, this is from Jane, who again, was in Nigeria. If you use fragrance oils, can you label your products all natural? If you use fragrance oils, can you label your products all natural? So the FDA does not have a term natural. They don't technically regulate it, but you know who does? The Federal Trade Commission does, and in fact, just recently they cited five different natural companies for calling their products natural when they weren't natural. So no, you can't. You can say made with 98% natural ingredients. You can say made with 99.5% natural ingredients, but you can't say it's 100% natural, 'cause fragrance oils aren't natural. It's a great question and I'm really glad that she wants to be safe and be truthful. That's really important.
