the cannon six hundred ex artie is one of canada's newest speed lights and it's improvement from previous speed lights because of its transmitter capabilities so in the past older flashes had to be fired through line of sight triggering with infrared which means you'd have a little infrared trigger and actually had to be lined up invisible in order to fire the flash or you had to set it as an optical slave neither of those were ideal and instead of radio solution was created for the six hundred ex artie so that's what you have now and that's one of the big benefits of this upgrade so this is a speed light and it has a guide number of one hundred and sixty seven the higher the guide number the more the output from this flash the way is under fifteen ounces and has a recycle time of point one to two point five seconds depending on the power output it gets over one hundred full power flashes one of the benefits is that it has a built in transceiver which means it can act as both master an...

d slave as a flash unit which means it can go ahead and talk to other groups and other channels of flashes telling them how they should be set another benefit of using speed lights particularly like this one are that you can shoot with high speed sync you can also shoot t tl manual e t t l and also screw stroke a scot the clones and they're eighteen different custom functions you khun set for the more advanced needs as a photographer now there are a couple downsides one of the downsides is the price not only is this unit more expensive but if you want to get the full capabilities out of the unit you need to have this transmitter and this transmitter is the e three artie so this transmitter you khun set all the different ratios and power outputs between several different groups and several different channels and also a lot more advanced capabilities but you add another third or even half of the price on to the cost of this unit you can actually fire the strobe using an on camera flash but if you don't have that where you have a model of camera that doesn't have a poppet flash you're going to be required to have this unit one other downside is that this user interface is relatively complicated and there will be um slight learning curve to figure out how to get all the pieces to work together so let's take a look at the back options in the basic fundamentals of the six hundred ex artie so I can change the six hundred from manual to multi t e t t l and then also if I get one of these sub menus hitting the plus or minus I can also change exposure compensation of this flash all the way from minus three two plus three output you also have the ability to separate each flash into different groups and also vary their ratios so going into sub menus I can change the ratios of different groups and also their exposure compensation there are much more advanced features included in this particular flash but those are the essentials that you need in order to shoot most events or most location photography so also the std three artie is a trigger for this unit and so I have the ability to command all of the other six hundred e x artie's from this unit and I can very the ratios and their exposure compensation whether I am in e t t l manual or other settings one of the features of the communication between these two systems is that it is radio triggered so no more line of sight required no more optical required but when you actually have the system set up to communicate correctly you get confirmation by the green link indicators scene on both the flash and the trigger here we have nikon speed light one of the newest delights they have which is the s p nine ten this is a hot shoe flasks and also go off camera has a guide number of one eleven and has a power variation of plus or minus three stops the average recycle time is point one to two point five seconds and it gets over a hundred full power flashes her battery the weight is under fifteen ounces and has a variety of features including an auto focus assist beam and three different lighting patterns for how the light is being projected on the subject it also gives you the ability to work with the s p nine tens in many different groups in many different channels you can shoot this flash and tt l manual mode it also has high speed sync and also it allows you to use nikon system called creative lighting system that allows you to control the output of the flash from the camera the benefit of this system is that it does not require you to have another trigger in order to fire your flash instead you can use the cameras pop up flash in order to trigger the sb nine ten one of the biggest downside of this particular speed light is indeed its price the system is great for photographers already shooting nikon and want a solution to take speed lights on location night cons creative lighting system allows you to fire the flash and also control the flash directly from the camera if you go into the menu into bracketing and flash and then two e three which is flash control for built in flash and commander mode you have the ability to control the power output in both manual anti tl of different groups as well as different channels so here now when I go ahead and fire the camera the pop up flash is going to trigger rsp nine ten take a look at that again of course you can also trigger the nikon sb nine ten with uses of other external triggers including pocket wizards you control the power output whether in manual or teo in third's of a stop from plus three two minus three in different groups and in different channels with this speed light can simply change the mode whether you're shooting in manual or in teo you can also change the exposure compensation to plus three or minus three here the moving this dial and the same thing when you are in manual mode it's free like can be put into different groups and different channels which is going to allow you more control for more complex speed light setups here we have the faux ticks metros plus system and this is a speed light and it's a third party aftermarket speed light which means it's not one of the cannons or the nikon so what they do is they design these speed light specifically for the camera's going to go on so it'll either say cannon this says for candidate the front or it'll say foreign icon and the trigger will say the same thing um I know that a lot of people kind of shy away from thes these non name brand speed lights or lenses and things like that but after taking a look at this particular flash I see that there is a huge benefit for somebody looking to build their speed light location lighting system so let's take a look at the things that I found so first ball has a guide number of one ninety which is comparable to all of its other competitors including the cannon and nikon equivalents its weight is just over fifteen ounces so again remains lightweight and portable it has a very similar build to its cannon competitors it also gets over a hundred full power flashes per battery charge but it has a lot more to it than that so you take a look at the photo techs they're a bunch of different models and the one that I recommend is this one in particular it's a faux ticks metro's plus because it has a built in transceiver so it can act as both master and slave it can send a signal to other flashes of how to behave including their output and their settings has a recycle time equivalent to its competitors point one to two point five seconds what it is significantly less expensive than other speed lights with similar specs it allows you to do high speed sync it also has strobe aske opic moans t t l e t t l and manual modes also these flashes allow you to group the flashes in many different groups and on several different channels in what's nice is that this odin trigger that you have here allows you to individually controlled the groups and channels whether you're on manual or tt l so they have you have the ability to control the flash exposure compensation or the power output of each of the strobes this simply fits on the hot shoe and it will fire any of the other units as long as they have the receiver built in or four units that don't have the built in receivers you can also buy adaptors that will then help them receive this signal this system is great for photographers looking to build up their speed light kit even with the trigger and flash is significantly less expensive than its competitors with just the flash or speed light alone one of the only real downsides doesn't have as many custom functions of some of the competitors and nikon for example allows you to control a lot of the flash directly from the back of the camera but that isn't as big of an issue as long as you have this transmitter that allows you to control the outputs so I can very simply change the mode of the flash from e t o to manual and multi a case gyroscopic by clicking on the mode button I can also click on set and change the exposure compensation all the way from plus three two minus three but looking down on the centre dial I can also turn my flash to high speed sync and I can also change the master slave relationship between this flash and others there's also of right of custom functions ally to customize this flash to fit your needs for a particular shoot on this trigger I have the ability to change different channels and different groups and then within each one I have the ability to change the mode whether it's in manual or tt l the exposure compensation and then also the output of each and every flash making very simple for these two to communicate and for the transmitted to control the speed light

Lindsey Adler is one of the best and most engaging photography instructors in the USA. I highly recommend this lighting course. It felt more like a 101 and a 102 course than just a basic course. She teaches in a way that makes learning alot of fun and the amount of time & effort that she puts into her video and class presentations are second to none. Her classes are well worth their weight in gold and you will walk away with a wealth of knowledge!
