Nikon Super Zoom Lenses
Next up we're going to be looking at the super zooms which are lenses that have a very large zoom range there is no defined number as to what it makes to get into a super zoom but if it goes from twenty four to two hundred that's like the full range that you could normally get and normally it would take two lenses to do it but now we're going to be able to do that in one lands now in this case we don't have fx or dx because I got a mix in here most of them if you can see in here actually have d x listed d x d x but this one doesn't have the x which means it's an f excellence over there with the twenty eight, two, three hundred so as we take a look through here first one is a dx eighteen to one forty we do the translation on this eighteen is a twenty seven millimeter lands one forty mathematically takes us up to around two hundred so it's like a twenty seven to two hundred millimeter lens which is a great general purpose lands that I could see someone heading off to vacation with and ta...
king is their only lands so this is very much we'll fit that need when it comes to the wide angle and telephoto capabilities it's reasonably small in size it's not that much money it's only one point one pounds compared to that two point four, we were just talking about so it's a very practical range, but it is kind of on the lower end of the construction and in the auto focus as faras speeded the auto focus in the system and if I could just grab a glimpse it's actually easier if you get here on the side of the screen, I can actually see the side of the lens from over here, and it says a m so it doesn't have the manual focus over right on that. I didn't realize this is a three d screen, but you have to be over here to see the third dimension. All right, so eighteen to two hundred eighteen to two hundred, two hundred that's going to get us up to three fifty, so for somebody who really wants more telephoto, this is going to do it, but it is going to be a bigger chunk of glass, and I don't know I've never really been a big fan of these because they've always been an optical compromise when you're getting into this big assume range it's also a relatively slow aperture three, five, two, five, six I've never been big fan of that, but if you want one lands you need to get up to that two hundred millimeter, which is a three hundred fifty equivalent angle of you this does it and it does so well for the least amount of money. At least you can spend with nikon eighteen to three hundred okay, now you're getting ridiculous. All right? This is a huge range, my god. Eighteen two, three hundred now this is getting to be even bigger and putting the super in super zoom it's true twenty seven to four hundred fifty millimeter. Now there's going to be some compromise is it's bigger? It's heavier optically we're going to have more issues with player and chromatic aberration and all of that. So you really gotta wanna have that big range in there and it really mystified me because this lands had another lens come out right afterwards that was very similar it's the next lens we're going to talk about and I think what happened is the nikon engineers came up with this lands and they're like okay, so we got it we got this eighteen to three hundred and somebody came along project you got a new project manager and they said that thing is enormous make it smaller and so, like a year later they came out with this lands, which is in eighteen two, three hundred again they took the aperture from five six down to six point three and they were able to reduce the size of the lens by quite a bit so if you wanted more range and you're willing to give up a little bit of light gathering ability you can do so in this package and so it's a little bit smaller size you gave up some of the light gathering ability in order to get a smaller size package now for you users who have a full frame camera this is really the only main choice you have for a super zoom from nikon it's a twenty eight two, three hundred very large range pretty big and heavy lands almost two pounds in size now you could use this with the crop frame of course but typically most users would put it on a full frame the problem with a crop frame is that twenty eight millimeters is don close to a normal ends so if you put it on a crop frame it means you have pretty much no wide angle and that's perfectly fine you could choose another lens to fill that gap but if you're looking for one lens it's all telephoto and if you're looking for all telephoto and I guess this would do it but it is relatively big and slow it's kind of a lumbering beast but if you need that big range it is available so let's just do the revue on all five of them and so the two lenses I was talking about earlier was the eighteen two three hundreds and I've tried to size these to the size that they actually are reasonably close and so that new six point three version of it is quite a bit smaller and if you were just kind of looking in the catalog going, I don't understand the difference between these two that five six to six point three that's the big difference and one of the things to be aware of is that on all the nikon cameras I'm not sure that I haven't had a good chance to really test this. The autofocus system is rated to five point six so once you go beyond this the auto focus system is not getting all the information that is supposed to so I have a feeling that focusing out at three hundred is going to be a little bit slower and a little bit more inconsistent it can still do it and that's why they just kind of pushed the limits a little bit over the edge and it it will still work but it's not going to be quite as responsive as the faster lenses and so when it comes to price you pay for more for full frame you pay more for the bigger ranges and these are really just a huge ranges you know before you buy those just really have to question yourself do you need that much of a range? Because there are compromises when it gets to making the lens that tries to do everything

Outstanding class! This is a must own. You will refer back to this class many times during your photog career. John has put a ton of work into this class and it shows. Being able to download the slides and other Nikon glass info is wonderful. Even if you're not a Nikon shooter you will still gleam tons of information from this class, John covers in great detail the strength and weaknesses of each lens and when you might consider using it. I was expecting a good class, but this turned into an epic class. I watched multiple videos several times. The only bad thing I can say is I "had" to order a few more lenses! Thank you John Greengo for making a truly amazing class.

Wow! What a course! Very in depth, lots of valuable information. John instructs with great knowledge and integrity. I have taken other online courses, NOT from Creative Live (my bad!) and was left feeling like a monkey who had learned tricks without understanding or knowledge. Now I feel I have the confidence to move forward on my photographic journey securely knowing how lenses function, what to look for and what price range I can expect. Bravo John! I'd love to see a 2020 update video as an addendum.
