Indoor Lighting: Creating a Window with Strobes and a Curtain

All right guys so we discussed all kinds of flash techniques what the flash is capable of at the first segment on the third segment I demonstrated a lot of those techniques in a little courtyard that they didn't have a lot going on for it I think the moral of the story is stop complaining about how bad your locations are and realize that we just shot a bunch of really cool shots in attending little courtyard on it smell kind of funny too so way had a lot of challenges to deal with now we're in this little room on if you pan around we're going to basically use the whole room to create amazing pictures here uh it doesn't matter what the room looks like it just matters what your brain what information's inside your head so we no further do uh let's begin if you point the camera this way you notice that when I walk into this room I see this curtains those curtains are they're kind of see through material right there also there also they're white and they're a little bit see through very im...

portant thing to know if I put a person in front of see through material and she's not see through what do you think is going to happen see through not see through it's gonna look really cool because if you overpower those curtains you're gonna blow them allow she's gonna look like she's standing in outer space aye like siberia outer space but if you exposed with the currents so it's about two stops overexposed not five stuffs like two stops overexposed it's gonna create a really cool frame for her so makes sense on the only way to do that is with flash is there's just no other way so we'll take the picture without flash and then I'm going to start doing what I do which is very simple I'm using what the flash it's capable off I know how my camera in iraq's with the flash and I'm using the environment of the three things I said on day one know the location that's the curtain know the how light behaves which is what we're going to do now I know how your flash works on how your camera works you know those three umbrella terms you can control and do anything those are the three things that we got to keep in mind the other thing to keep in mind it's not to be afraid to fail I I'm going to do this now I don't know what you're gonna look like I don't care again she's going to try uh I can rely on my knowledge to know that it's going to look pretty done good I can already tell I think I see the photo in my head and I love it look at it it's so cool okay that beauty also about posting I'll post her down and we're gonna do a more fashiony posts so we're gonna do something pretty strong in the post and she can pull it off I saw it on the third segment so with that less grab him and uh unless begin okay okay no okay go ahead and stand here and put your arms over the wind over the two window panels good um not opposing class but quick posting tip never put the hands at the same level one hand higher than the other looks a lot better right center okay, boy one hind higher than the other good. Now another big posting tip you see the thumb sticking out of the curtain don't do that you know what I want to see the little fingers coming out of nowhere okay, so grab the hand and just adjust so you can do it this way actually don't grab just do it this way this way instead of this way way one hand here like that and just keep this elbow down here could grab this leg and cross it over this one like that now grab your tippy toe and put it out now bend that knee now bring the tip it on put it back in good okay, grab arch the back, grab that shoulder and put it further back grab your bring your face higher up bring your face this way chin up higher grab your waist on twisted more so go like this one that's it raise your chin a little bit put show me more of your arm this way bring that elbow down a little bit we'll keep this on where it's at don't correct don't grip into that just kind of very very very lightly touch it thank you okay I'm gonna go ahead and turn off my flash I'm gonna shoot the picture in natural life first we're going to go through the steps okay um so let's try this actually kind of switch lance's police twenty four to seventy when can I move you a little bit um camera still had to turn off the camera it wasn't working okay let me try this again yeah it's not uh letting me focus oh, there you go okay okay here's what he looks like without flash that's black and white and he switches to color the color where's the monitor very nice. Okay, this is what the photo looks like if you just do it natural light it's probably not going to impress a lot of people okay? It just kind of there part of the problem is there's just not enough action happening in the back and the windows and the currents don't say anything I do like the roof though it's kind of a cool design so what I'm gonna do is I'm gonna blow out the entire entire curtains okay so let's grab the, uh pro for a light and the pro photo sent the commander for the pro fordham way don't need that thing just a performer by itself the reason why we don't need the diffuser is I'm not trying to defuse the light I'm tryingto um make it us powerful it's possible I'm not shooting somebody's face I'm shooting the curtains so okay let's put that for a photo light in power eight go go about ten feet behind her police tonight when you when I do this uh go farther back calling go as far back as you can when I do this can you bring your left leg back again back to normal I now when I tell you take a step forward and endured in motion okay so try it again do it and then bring it up and do it in motion and ask that me as that leg is doing it in motion go ahead and raise your chin again higher up okay let's see let's see where I'll tell you how high to go go higher on your face a little higher now tailed it to that side that's it that's it just remember that so put the leg back as you put your leg raise your chin to ok alright calling go if you can go farther back it will be better we do a test shot here I should look okay can I get someone could you joshua hold this right here kind of stand close to her like by that by that gopro right there okay so settings I'm a four point five shutter speed ninety s oh eight hundred I'm actually going to lower my eyes so because I'm using a strobe gonna goto is so two hundred and then I'm gonna put that light in full power okay all right calling full power on the pro photo gordon back way up way up good full power manual okay start with this so okay one to bring your chin up three now good good let's bring that we have another pro photo anywhere all right let's bring that out power four point five on we need a diffuser over this one we need that soft box that we used that we had the reason why we need a soft books for this one is because we are going to eliminate her face right in fact the bigger the soft books here the better but we'll stick to this all right? Go ahead and uh you can oh somebody mr hold that life who wants to hold that light? Okay now what now that you're going to illuminate her face you've got to think where is the house? They can illuminate the face so if that if that light is coming from the left then put that girl's nose to the left as well and that will look good don't turn away from the light so amanda when he's there when you do that turn your your chin towards that doors that will keep your eyes on me like that it's perfect just say like that's what should be right on ok tell me when you're ready calling okay one two three okay more power on that goto six yep on one two three good now wanna include the roof that's perfect explosion on her face goto um yeah that's just fine I'm going to do a vertical show to include the roof elements now okay calling ready one two three okay, the light is the light hit uh way whose light is that? Your light pointed further a little down calling yeah because it's hitting the roof you're essentially go higher and then lower it so it doesn't hit the roof okay one two three okay, sit in the roof that's okay all right go ahead and walk out and they walk in and stick and stick to this post okay, give me a second. Let me switch this to black and white okay, ready go one, two, three, four, five chin up a little more to the light boom good jump okay, take a look at that cool right super cool framing the reason why I told her to go back after I did all that work and then you tell her go back on the way walking is because that's how I post people so it looks like you're never posting them you you make the post you work, you work, you're you work hard on the post and then you break it all however moved back and walked into the post and it looks like she was just chilling there if I would have told her to post everything and she was just sitting there like a post it looks posi now if I do if I don't do any of this look what happens I don't know if you can compare this picture to this picture look at the difference in this one on the next one this one's natural lighting and his wide angle so that turns into that that's interesting that's not really that interesting okay, now even if I expose its just when you look first of all, look how beautiful her body's positions one hind higher than the other the current doesn't distract you from the back uh the opening of the current frame sir right? The lighting with the softball puts light on this side of the face and the other light separated from the background so her hair doesn't blend in calling go ahead and turn your light off let's keep this light on look what happens if you don't separate her from the background okay somebody turned his back on now let's look at this sorry I changed the fred again okay, look what happens if you don't separate you khun can we compare this next new one this next new photo with the final one that I did that looks that was properly done yeah, this is the difference right that compared to that now if you want, you could even lower the power of this to make it so it doesn't blow out as much but um this doesn't look attractive this looks like a face coming out of nowhere they so she's got hair right? Yeah would you ever do this with like a bride is wearing white yeah, absolutely that's really a gorgeous look and when you print it and you you finesse it that's going to look amazing and it was these curtains they're not attractive at all but when you hit him with the light you erased how ugly they are but you keep the framing off the curtains that are open so that's the key all right, beautiful. Um that was nice. So you those beautiful come forward that was locate now its location number one in this room now I will move forward did you guys like that one kind of neat, right? I mean it's something yeah it's basically a creating a window you know what you're creating. You're creating something out of nothing like that. Current could have just being there and it's over. Or you can make a picture out of it, okay?

Im sitting in my office listening to Roberto with my earplugs on and I know I have already left 2 reviews but he's so funny…. my family comes into the office asking me "whats so funny" Roberto makes me laugh out loud with his jokes but at the same time, he is SO great at teaching. Im watching for second time to make sure all his good info is ingrained. HIGHLY recommend you take his workshop on Picture Perfect Lighting if you truly want to take your photography to the next level! WOW thats 3 reviews now…can you tell I am impressed

I'm taking a portrait photography course at NYIP online. one of the mentors there recommended the posing book by Roberto. I ended up ordering at the library the posing and the perfect practice book. I fell in love with both books...ended up buying them and signing up here for the year membership just so I can take all of his photos courses. I spent most of my weekend doing perfect lighting course here I am in love with the way that he teaches! He makes something so difficult and challenging for me make sense. I also like that he challenges us photographers to be true professionals. I am thrilled to have discovered Roberto and already noticed my photography is better in the short time that I've been studying him.
