Machine Overview

Before we get started on the actual stitching and getting sewing and looking at all the stitches and things that you can do with your machine I want to cover some machine basics and ah before I even do that I want to call out two things for you and one is I got here with me the box that the machine comes in and what I just wanted to say about this was when you purchase your machine if you can if space allows in your home to hang on to your box if you ever if you're ever storing your machine or you need to transport your machine or you need tio send it for service their warranty work on occasion the best place to do that is in something that fits it perfectly and that would be your box so we encourage you to hang on to that if you are if you can't the other thing I wanted to just show you briefly is what your machine looks like on the inside always find this is very interesting for folks because I often hear today oh machines aren't made the way they used to be and and of course the out...

side of your machine is a lighter weight material which keeps it portable but you can see right here this is what the inside looks like when I'm taking the cover off that everywhere where it needs to be heavy duty metal frame metal parts everywhere where that's important it is it's the casing is what just is made of something different in order to keep your machine very portable for you because a lot of folks don't have a dedicated selling space and they need to move their machine around from to take it out to so put it away when they're finished, and so that just keeps it nice and portable for you. So I thought that was a nice thing to show you there. So let me show you what actually comes with your machine and there's. A little plastic envelope inside the packaging that contains some materials, and one of them is a dust cover for your machine and this. If you are lucky enough to have a space where you can actually leave your machine, you want to cover it up at the end of a sewing session with your dust cover to just keep extra dust and lint from going into the open areas of your machine to keep that is dust free as possible. Um, you probably had a dvd in there called ready set so and that's a kind of sewing basics dvd that I produced, and this is some warranty information and information about how to get in touch with singer you have the of course, your instruction manual, and we would encourage you to if you haven't already done so or if you purchase them decide to purchase the machine when you get it home to actually spend just a little time it's not really that big you can see but spend some time really reading through your instruction manual because you would be surprised what you find out what you learn about your machine from this booklet and many of the things I'm going to talk about today are actually in here is well and then finally you have this wonderful what we call our quick start guide one side of it and it's very, very good clear illustrations of the way to prepare the bobbin and insert the bobbin into the machine and then when you flip it over it shows you how to thread the upper part of the machine including how the threading mechanism works and you might even just want to keep that really handy in case you don't remember how to thread your machine just a quick glance at that but that is your quick start guide now when you take this particular machine out of the box you will notice that this came in a separate uh little enclosed part of the packaging and this is your removable extension table which slides right onto your machine like so and in here there's a button on the side that you press and this opens up this very large tray which is where all of your accessories are sometimes we hear folks say I didn't get any accessories, but they're actually don't hear in your tree and that's in your manual, too. So let me show you what is included with your machines. I'll just pull some of this stuff out of here, and we'll take a look at what all this stuff is. So you get extra package of needles and a variety of sizes, you get both e style twenty twenty, which is for woven fabrics and some twenty, forty five, which aired in it for knit fabrics, and I'll talk about that just a moment you get three school caps, can we go three different spool caps? And these are what go on the end of your school pin when you put the threat on the spool pin and they're varying sizes just depending on what size of threads school you have. So if you've got something a little more medium size, you might use a medium size cap. If you've got something that's a little larger like this, you might want your larger cap, so these air kind of designed to sort of you have the best fit for depending on the spool you're using, you've got a school pin as an auxiliary spool pin and a spool pin felt and what this is this goes but this bullpen felt goes on the end of that, like so and there's a hole up here, a tw, the top of your machine right up here kind of behind the bob and winding spindle and up here is where the end of this goes to give you a vertical um, just like that in there, there we go that excuse me, this goes up here sorry goes on the top side that we go and slip that in like so and that gives you a vertical thread delivery, and I'll talk about when to do that in a little later on as we get through the morning there's a screwdriver and this is your buttonhole foot, and I'm going to demonstrate how to make a buttonhole in just a little while. This is your seam ripper. Actually, you're seeing it's a brush for cleaning and then you when you pull this out and turn it around, this is your seam ripper or is we sometimes like to call it an unsourced, and so we'll use that for cutting open a buttonhole later, get some extra bobbins, a zipper foot, a satin foot and a blind him foot, so those are your included items and I will be, as I say, I'll be using all these in just a bit, so just bring these out of the way. And we're going to take just a little tour of the machines I'm going to sit down and come around to the front here and just point out some of the main parts of your machine this over here on the side of the machine is your hand wheel and you turn your hand well toward you when you want to manually move the needle up and down this is your bob and winding spindle and you're bob and winding stopper and when we wind a bobbin we push this over to the right for winding and it's over to the left when you're not winding you want to make sure it's always to the left when you're not winding a bobbin okay and we'll talk about that more in just a moment spool pin for horizontal thread path or the auxiliary school pin for vertical thread delivery this of course as we talked about a moment ago was carrie handle this is a thread guide this is a bob and winding tension disc used on lee for when you wind the bob in when you thread the machine to so this is not use this is not part of the upper thread a path this is just for winding a bobbin and I'll demonstrate that for you this is our thread path is there tension denial this is a threading lever which I'll show you in just a moment this is how I actually thread the needle down here is of course our needle, the needle clamp and needle clamps screw this is the presser foot back here is a button for releasing the presser foot and then when I want to put the presser foot back on again, I simply line it up underneath the presser foot like that the shank or the ankle is they sometimes call it and click that back on again you don't have to try to push the foot back on it'll actually just click into place what happens is there's a little pin right here on your foot on any of your feet here's for example you're sat on foot there's a pin on that one too they all have that little pin on them and you line up that pin underneath this little claw that's kind of shaped like this and when you bring your present foot lifter down, if you miss it just keep wiggling that around a little bit until it just clicks into place, you don't have to try to push it on there, okay? And then this is our needle plate. This is thie bob and cover plate. This is the bob and cover release button, so we're gonna wind a bob and shortly here in just a moment and we're going to take that bob and out of there and to do that we're going to press this little release button to the right and it will make this cover pop open for us like that, and we remove it. And we have access to our bobbin it's. Really nice, because this cover plate and this bob in our clear, they're transparent. So as you're sowing your project, you're able to monitor your threads supply as you go, you don't have to take the bob and out to look to see if it's getting low and then re threat it. You can just glanced down here at the top of your top drop in bob, and we call this and then again to remove your extension table. There's a button right back here on the back side of this. When you press that down, this will release, and then you also have access in the back here to a dropping feed mechanism, and we'll use that a little bit later. But this will drop your feed dogs and, well, I'll describe what those are and what they're for.

I'm not an expert at sewing, but I feel like I could sew anything after watching Becky Hanson's class. Another great class, another great instructor brought to us by Creative Live!

I was watching the course free and was so impressed with what I was learning that I purchased it at the break. I like it very much. Now I would like to know what "extras" will be provided and what "student work" will be asked for.
